    Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him.

    The Battles of Hampton Roads – March 8 & 9, 1862 !Anna Gibson Holloway, The Mariners’ Museum March 8, 1862 The same storm that nearly sank the Monitor on her trip south had kept the CSS Virginia in port as well. It was not until the morning of March 8, 1862 that the weather appeared acceptable for taking the Confederate ironclad out into Hampton Roads. With workmen still aboard, the commanding officer, Franklin Buchanan, ordered his crew to ready the ersatz vessel for a cruise. Most believed that this would be a shake-down (test) cruise, but Buchanan had confided in his officers that he intended to take the vessel directly into battle. As the crew cast off the mooring lines, the workmen, who had been installing the fore and aft gunport shutters leapt to the dock. The Virginia was underway. Those observing her departure kept eerily silent, recalled some of the crew years later. As the Virginia neared Craney Island, commander Franklin Buchanan reportedly said, “Sailors, in a few minutes you will have the long looked for opportunity of showing your devotion to our cause. Remember that you are about to strike for your country and your homes. The Confederacy expects every man to do his duty. Beat to quarters!” Then he reminded them, “The whole world is watching you today.”1 Privately, Buchanan must have had mixed feelings. Keary 5 December 2016 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Ironclad, Naval Architecture, Civil War Naval Architecture Analysis of the Civil War Ironclad CSS Virginia Nicholas Marickovich ABSTRACT This thesis presents the results of a naval architecture analysis of the Civil War Ironclad CSS Virginia, built by the Confederate States Navy to break the Union Blockade of Hampton Roads, and which engaged the USS Monitor on the second day of the Battle of Hampton Roads, March 9th, 1862. The purpose of the analysis was to examine the ship from a naval architectural standpoint pertaining to hydrostatics, stability, weight and CG, sea keeping, and basic resistance/powering requirements. The goal was to see if the story of the CSS Virginia, destroyed on May 11th, 1862 by its own crew to keep it from falling into Union hands, could have ended differently with an attack on Washington, a Northern city, or a run to a friendly Southern port, such as Savannah or Charleston. Paramarine software was used to build a geometry model based on lines included in a book by Sumner B. Besse for ship modelers. The geometry model provided the basic measures of displacement for the hull form at a draft of 21 ft forward and 22 ft aft which in turn allowed for a weight estimate to be undertaken.

    M2134 LOGBOOKS OF THE USS CUMBERLAND, OCTOBER 1843–SEPTEMBER 1859 Compiled by Claire Prechtel-Kluskens National Archives and Records Administration Washington, DC 2010 INTRODUCTION On the four rolls of this microfilm publication, M2134, are reproduced logbooks of the USS Cumberland, Oct. 4, 1843–Sept. 8, 1859. These logbooks constitute a small part of the series identified as Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, ca. 1801–1940 (ARC Identifier 581208).* These records are part of Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Record Group (RG) 24. BACKGROUND Designed by William Doughty, Cumberland was one of the Potomac-class frigates. The design borrowed heavily from older American frigate designs used in vessels such as the Constitution. However, Doughty gave these frigates more guns than called for in European designs. As a result, the Cumberland and her sister ships had a fully armed spar deck, along with guns on the gun deck, resulting in a heavily armed, 50-gun warship. She was launched May 24, 1842, at the Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts. For her first mission, the ship sailed to the Mediterranean, including Port Mahon, Genoa, Naples, Toulon, Jaffa, and Alexandria. The cruise was largely uneventful, though there was a diplomatic scuffle with the Sultan of Morocco who refused to recognize the newly appointed American ambassador. The most notable event was Lt. Andrew Foote’s successful effort to ban the grog ration. It later became Navy Department policy in 1862 and it is still in effect to this day with some exceptions. Cumberland was flagship of the Home Squadron from February to December 1846.
