FOCUS ON: SEASONAL MUSIC FOR ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS or “Sleepers, wake” and all that jazz!

Special music for the upcoming seasons of Advent and Christmas takes many forms, chief among them being seasonal song – hymns, psalms and carols – and choir music too from all traditions. The Minster Choir will present a widely diverse group of special choral items to assist the worship of the coming weeks and work is already well underway on the preparation this music, of course.

Some of the earliest “purpose-built” hymns in English feature strongly in Advent – such as Wesley’s Lo! He comes with clouds descending and Come, thou long-expected Jesus along with Philip Doddridge’s stirring stanzas beginning Hark! the glad sound, the Saviour comes . These noble eighteenth-century texts vie for our attention and affection alongside others translated from Latin originals and early office hymns such as Creator of the stars of night. Maybe the most spectacular is the versification of all seven Advent Antiphons (the so-called “Great Os”) by John Mason Neale that encapsulates the essence of Advent so wonderfully – O come, O come, Emmanuel. Christmas hymnody includes other significant texts from the 18th century – O come, all ye faithful and Hark! the herald angels sing chief among them.

Plainchant and Lutheran chorales are among the musical provisions for many texts. Bach’s incorporation of chorales within his Passiontide and Christmas Oratorios is a notable feature of such works. St Peter’s Singers will give two celebrated baroque works within a week at the end of the current month – Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at Halifax Minster on Saturday 24 November and Messiah at Fulneck Church on Friday 30 November. Quite why Messiah is regarded so universally as a “Christmas” work, when the majority of its texts are for Passiontide and Easter, remains a mystery!

The task of musicians is to ensure that what is offered is reflective and uplifting – an adjunct to worship and wonder. The programme of this year’s Town Hall lunchtime concert by the combined choirs of the Minster and Cathedral here in Leeds on Monday 26 November offers Handel (the vesper psalm Nisi Dominus ), Gounod ( Tu Rex Gloriae, Christe) and Górecki ( Totus tuus sum, Maria ) in an appropriately catholic programme. Your support on this occasion, as at the other pre-Christmas services and events, will be a great encouragement to those of us who make music day by day and week by week.
