That was brilliant. How did Prineas come up with the idea ...By Rachel NeumeierWhoever would have thought of making the Godmother the villain? That was brilliant.How did Prineas come up with the idea of zapping everybodyrsquo;s memory, occasionally multiple times, so that no one in the book knows their own histories or names? By the second half of the book, the main protagonist doesnrsquo;t even remember the first half of the story. That was brilliant.What a great notion, making so many of the secondary characters who might have been bad guys into sympathetic characters ndash; the stepsisters especially; even the stepmother by the end. So clever to show how these fundamentally decent people are being misshapen into petty tyrants by the way theyrsquo;re all trapped in the Cinderella story. And Prineas pulled this off with just a line here and a line there. That was brilliant.What an interesting stylistic choice, making Pinrsquo;s pov chapters first person present and Shoersquo;s pov chapters third person present. That actually worked for me ndash; I didnrsquo;t even notice the shifts between first and third until I was halfway through the book.Now Irsquo;m totally looking forward to the sequel. Which is based on Sleeping Beauty, evidently. There are princes and princesses and fairy godmothers and magic kingdoms. But the fairy godmother is not who you think she is and the princess is not just waiting for her prince to come.I generally come to novels with my own expectations and desires, a demand to be entertained and a hope that maybe I'll learn something. Ash Bramble delivers on all of that. It's the sort of novel that provides a unique perspective while still delivering a kick-ass story full of sword fights and adventure and occasional party dresses about characters I cared about and rooted for. It has delightful little gifts to the reader, moments of the familiar mixed cleverly into something brand-new.It's a book about story and a book about telling stories. Meanwhile, Shoe is saved by rebels and plots to rescue Pin. When Prince Cor realizes that he has also been used, he joins Pin, Shoe, and the rebels in their efforts to thwart the Godmother's power. But can they ever escape the inevitable ending that Story has planned for them? Narrated in the first person alternately by Pin and Shoe, the book begins with a sense of foreboding and steadily builds suspense as the characters piece together the truth about how the Godmother manipulates people and events. Prineas skillfully brings her characters to life and creates a believable premise for this unconventional "Cinderella" story, even managing to sneak in references to other fairy tales. There is plenty of action mixed with romance, as Shoe and Cor compete for Pin's affections. The wicked Godmother concept works perfectly, and it is a revelation when Pin discovers the reason for the witch's actions in the original stories. (Anne Sexton, “Cinderella”) In “The Model,” a fictional tale in Joyce Carol Oates’ Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque, Oates employs the simile “as vague and unexam- ined as a childhood fairy tale” (Oates 111). Certainly, fairy tales can heavily influence early childhood, particularly regarding perceptions of those characteristics and demeanors traditionally considered “good” or “evil.” As Madonna Kolbenschlag details in Kiss Sleeping Beauty Good- bye, “Fairy tales are the bedtime stories of the collective conscious- ness .... They are shared wish fulfillment, abstract dreams that resolve conflicts and give meaning to experience” (3). Not just mere short sto- ries with marketable maxims, fairy tales can worm their way into a child’s subconsciousness, where images and attitudes can then perpetu- ate societal standards. “Often despised as silly or grotesque,” Alfred Corn writes, “fairy tale is the Cinderella among literary forms, going so much further than its humble origins seemed to promise and providing us with many sharply outlined archetypes and clichkd metaphors (like the Cinderella analogy in this very sentence)” (612). Cinderella repre- sents the quintessential fairy tale, with its chaste damsel in distress, wicked steprelatives, patriarchal royalty, and, of course, Prince Charming and the ever-trite wish come true.

Very exciting! It took me awhile to finish due to May being the craziest month ever for me. This book is told in Acts. Strong world building, jumped right into the action, likable protagonist, interesting magic system. Act 2 was not as good in comparison. The author introduced two storylines that were based on Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. I didn't I won this advanced reading copy from a website hosting a YA book giveaway. I didn't like that. I felt like the author did a wonderful job drawing me into a very unique and expertly told story of her own and then this reimagining of old fairytales was inserted into it.

Ashputtel Fairy Tale Reappears Into Dystopian Cinder. English Department, faculty of Arts and Humanities. State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabaya. Thesis Advisor: Sufi Ikrima Sa’adah M. Hum This study examines the elements and several concepts on Ashputtel by Brothers Grimm that have been modified and rewritten into Cinder by Marissa Meyer. This study focuses on the way characters on Ashputtel are reflected into Cinder and the way Fairy tale’s concept of Ashputtel is reappeared in dystopian’s novel in Cinder. This study uses the qualitative method and applies intertextuality as the main theory and new criticism as the supporting theory. The result of the study shows that both Cinder and Ashputtel exhibit some differences in the attitude and characteristics of the main characters, the characterization of the life-saver characters, and the prince’s personality. Moreover, some of the fairy tale concepts in Ashputtel reappear in Cinder in the concepts of good versus evil, magical hero, the setting of place and time, and the ending of the story. Ash novel is one of young adult genre retelling the classic fairy tale story of Cinderella with the gendering plot twist of the main female character. Instead of construct the main characters to heterosexual, Malinda Lo deconstructs her gender and sexual identity. The aim of this research will focuses on investigating the relationship between the elements of psychosexual development and sexuality construction in the narratives that change the main character’s gender and sexual identity. This research are using 5 stages of development theory by Sigmund Freud and performativity theory by Judith Butler. To analyze the narratives, this research is using deconstruction theory by Jaques Derrida as methodology approach. The gendering process and sexuality construction to lesbian appears in several events that bring the main character questioning the masculine role and construct her identity by the dominant stepmother.
