A congregation for all people ... all of the time!!! . We all know the phrase You cant be everything to everyone all of the time. I know there is a great deal of truth to this adage but we, here on the temple staff, are trying more and more to prove this saying false. We are trying to make Rodef Shalom a place for all people as much of the time as possible. This month, as you look through this bulletin, I ask you to keep our efforts to meet the needs of the many in mind. Further, I invite you to find the place where you can envision yourself - where your needs, hopes and desires will be met through our programs.

Consider this: we used to have two types of worship services available to the membership, family services and regular adult services. Now we have five: family, regular adult, tot, Junior Congregation and the Shabbat morning minyan. Three different youth services are taking place as well as two very distinct adult opportunities. We hope every temple member can feel at home in at least one of these services.

Further, in our efforts to strengthen our sacred community, we are striving to be more supportive of those in need. We now reach out through support groups and special programs to intermarried couples, widows and widowers, adult care givers, and our newest group, JACS (Jewish Alcoholics and Chemical dependents and Significant others). Certainly, there are many needs among our membership and we hope to continue to reach out and offer support to as many groups as possible.

Another example of our ever-expanding program is the many levels of adult education that we are now offering. Once we only had one level of Hebrew literacy available; now we have three adult Hebrew reading classes and one conversational Hebrew class. Finally, all skill levels are being met.

As we strive to do more to meet the needs of our membership, to be more "user friendly," please feel free to contact us about an idea or need or dream you might have about what you have always wanted your temple to be for you. Please help us to be no less than many things to most people much of the time.

Congregational forum with Rabbi Schwartzman: "Bringing the CCAR-endorsed Principles for Reform home to Temple Rodef Shalom"

WHO will be elected to serve on the 1999-2000 committee to nominate the Temple Rodef Shalom officers for the first full year of the NEW MILLENNIUM: 2000-2001?????

WHAT creative, exciting new program and worship developments can we look forward to as we proceed through this year?????

WHEN will we begin to see the shape of our beautiful new building emerge from the bulldozed rubble that ate the back of our social hall?????

WHERE is the hamentaschen? (Whoops! Its too early for the Purim Carnival ... just a test to see if you are still reading.)

HOW do we best utilize our resources - including YOU, our congregational family - to build and transmit to future generations the "sacred community" that is Temple Rodef Shalom?

The answers to these questions - and many more - will be found at the fall congregational meeting. Please attend!!! The highlight of the morning will be a congregational dialog facilitated by Rabbi Schwartzman on the Central Conference of American recently endorsed "Statement of Principles for " - the much-discussed "Pittsburgh Platform" that you may have heard about. Together, we will discuss the potential impact of these principles on ritual practices in our temple, and how our own individual interpretations of these principles might guide our personal spiritual development.

In other discussions, you will have the chance to add your voice to those of your TRS friends and family who are helping to guide decision making important to the temples future. Learn how you can participate in our activities and receive our heartfelt thanks for the key role that YOU play in our success. Get updated on TRS news, events and activities ... and meet and greet new and continuing friends who share temple life with you.

We look forward to welcoming you, and to hearing YOUR thoughts and ideas on a range of issues of current and future interest to all members of the TRS community. SEE YOU THERE!!! Ellen Blalock, president 5

OwAsmany of you know, I feel incredibly lucky to be starting my rabbinate in such an active, warm and elcoming congregation. My first few months at TRS have been filled with joys, challenges and learning from both the staff and individuals. Rabbi Schwartzman and Cantor Shochet are exceptional colleagues - we share so much with each other, both professionally and personally. They have truly welcomed me with open arms into their lives.

I want to thank Rabbi Schwartzman, Cantor Shochet, Rabbi Berkowits and the entire congregation for the beautiful Ceremony of Installation last month. The blessings shared by my rabbi, Rabbi Charles Kroloff, my colleagues and individual members of the congregation were truly touching. My entire family has also felt very welcomed by TRS; I hope that some of you had the opportunity to meet them.

Few people are lucky to have the support and love I feel at the beginning of my career as a rabbi. I want to thank all the people who helped to make my Ceremony of Installation a special moment in my life. I will strive to live up to the ideals and hopes expressed by generations of rabbis before me and the dreams of the Jewish people I feel chosen to serve in my life.

Last month we began our Shabbat morning minyan services with great success! Our 10:15 am Saturday morning service began with almost 30 members participating. In addition to a Shabbat service filled with singing and spirit, we also celebrated Simchat Torah together. All those who wanted were able to dance with the Torah and have an aliyah to the Torah. Jonathan Kosarin, Catharina Jacknow and Hillel Weinberg chanted beautifully from the Torah - all for the first time, too! Stuart Weiss gave a short Dvar Torah on the topic of Simchat Torah. After services, almost everyone who attended stayed an additional hour to share Shabbat lunch together. There was a great sense of ruach - spirit - throughout the entire morning.

We welcome all those interested in joining us on the first Saturday of each month at 10:15 am in the multipurpose room. Members of the minyan participate by either leading the service, reading or chanting from the Torah, giving a Dvar Torah, or leading an "ethical portion" - a presentation of 5- 10 minutes about any Jewish subject or topic of their choice. If you would like more information, please contact Rabbi Burstein at 532-2217.

We look forward to having you join us!

The mitzvah of visiting the sick

Every Friday night, the service includes the Mi Sheberach prayer, in which we mention all those who are ill and in need of healing. The congregation joins in prayer for them to return to their homes improved in health, with better prospects of becoming once again active and useful citizens. In addition to our prayers, our clergy have placed great stress on the importance of bicker cholim -- the mitzvah of visiting the sick.

Usually it is a relative who visits. But through the ages, a special committee frequently has been set up, particularly in Eastern European communities, to be sure that everyone in need of healing would be visited.

The time commitment is minimal. Visiting the sick can be done on a very flexible schedule to suit both the healing person and the visitor. There will be a meeting for all those interested in early December. If you would like to join us in continuing this beautiful mitzvah, please contact Jerry Greenwald (759-3660) or Lisa Kaplan Gordon (241-7807). Gourmet Catering 9- M&A TM

19 OHEL YAACOV

Our congregational family has long been a generous supporter of community programs that provides housing assistance to the homeless and low-income families. Through our Ohel Yaacov (Tent of Jacob) Fund, temple members give generously at this time of year. The Sisterhood also generously supports the Ohel Yaacov Fund through its House Pin sales.

Among the projects that our Ohel Yaacov Fund has contributed to in the past few years are:

zz Sukat Shalom, A Peaceful Shelter - a three-bedroom apartment in Falls Church that provides short-term transitional housing to families with children;

Homeless shelters in Arlington, Falls Church, Baileys Crossroads and Reston, and a shelter for battered women;

Jewish Foundation for Group Homes, a provider of supervised housing for the disabled poor; and

x) DC Habitat for Humanity, which builds new housing for homeless families.

All funds contributed to the Ohel Yaacov Fund from now until the end of the year will be allocated and distributed by the social action committee at its January meeting.

Jewish Alcoholics, Chemically Dependent Persons & Significant Others (JACS)

Up to 50% of patient populations in residential treatment are Jewish. Temple Rodef Shalom is now a community of over a thousand families and is not immune to this disease. In October we began our JACS group, designed to help one another. Thats the power of JACS. The spiritual programs of JACS help us to connect with each other and reaffirm our Jewish tradition. Just finding out that there are others like us, that we are not alone, has brought an enormous sense of relief to many of us. The program is for those who are addicted as well as their family and friends - adults, adolescents and children.

If you think you can benefit from JACS, feel free to visit the JACS home page at www.jacsweb.org. Please join us in making it happen at Temple Rodef Shalom. Our meetings are:

Thursdays, 7:30 - 8:30 pm

For more information or if you wish to participate, please call Susan Michelson at 448-8569 or Rabbi Burstein at 532-2217.
