It may also incidentally serve a wider purpose in showing the influence of the sea upon the rise and progress of a town. My indebtedness for its production is due in the first instance to Mr. J. M. FACTS pertaining to the history of Aberdeen as a port prior to the fourteenth century are few and incomplete, but a sufficient number exist to prove that even in those early days the city was a place of consider- able trade. During the thirteenth century, in the days of the Flemish settlers, it was the commercial capital of the North of Scotland, and a century before, it was known to the Norwegians' as a trading town. About 1150, the buccaneering King Eystein, one of the joint sovereigns of Norway, while engaged on a piratical cruise along the east coast of Britain, landed at Aberdeen and pillaged the town.* One of the earliest references to Aberdeen in history is in connection with shipping. In 1134, King David I granted towards the erection of the new bishopric, a tithe to be levied on all ships called " snows " which traded to and from the port. The snow was denned by the King's lawyers and others ignorant of seamanship as a navis cana or caridida, a white ship, but in reality " snau " or " schnau," the vernacular name for these vessels, stood for snout or beak. They were ships probably of the largest size used for merchandise, with a prominent type of bow.f During the reign of Alexander III, Aberdeen shared largely in the commercial prosperity of Scotland. P. 9. 2 2 THE PORT OF ABERDEEN exports were few, being almost entirely confined to hides, furs, wool and salmon, but her trade in these was relatively extensive. Stringent laws were passed pro- hibiting the exportation of goods from Scotland, for the reason that the nation would be impoverished through the loss of ships and cargoes by storm and piracy. The enter- prising Scottish merchants, however, ignored these restrictive measures, and in consequence frequently suffered the penalty of capture. In 1273, three Aber- deen merchants, Thomas Ker, John of Aberdeen and Walter de la Bothe, while on a voyage to St. Omer with a cargo of wool, ox hides, salmon, lamb skins, etc., were captured near Yarmouth by one John Adrian of Win- chelsea, their ship plundered, and they themselves cruelly treated. They declared on oath that the wool belonged to them and to other Aberdeen merchants, whereupon Edward I ordered its restitution. This act benefited the unfortunate merchants little, as shortly afterwards their vessel was again seized and their merchandise confiscated.* In the thirteenth century, Aberdeen had already established a reputation as an exporter of fish. In 1281 Edward I sent agents throughout the country to collect provisions for his army preparatory to an invasion of Wales. One, Adam of Fuleham, was commissioned to buy 100 barrels of sturgeons and 5,000 salt fish at Aber- deen.

Byman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This model predicts progress in transnational illicit market suppression campaigns by comparing the relative efficiency and support of the suppression regime vis-à-vis the targeted illicit market. Focusing on competitive adaptive processes, this ‘Boxer’ model theorizes that these campaigns proceed cyclically, with the illicit market expressing itself through a clandestine business model, and the suppression regime attempting to identify and disrupt this model. Success in disruption causes the illicit network to ‘reboot’ and repeat the cycle. If the suppression network is quick enough to continually impose these ‘rebooting’ costs on the illicit network, and robust enough to endure long enough to reshape the path dependencies that underwrite the illicit market, it will prevail. Two scripts put this model into practice. The organizational script uses two variables, efficiency and support, to predict organizational evolution in response to competitive pressures.

    Stronger Together Prosperity for Aberdeen 2017-2022 Aberdeen City Council Conservative and Unionist Party, Aberdeen Labour and Independent Alliance Group Programme for Aberdeen City Council 2017-2022 Our Vision As a returning coalition, we intend to build on what we have already put in place between 2012 and 2017. The Council’s strategic business plan refresh, approved unanimously at the Council’s Budget meeting in February 2017, agreed the alignment of the Strategic Business Plan to Aberdeen City Community Planning Partnership’s Local Outcome Improvement Plan, as well as alignment to the coalition’s policy document “Smarter Aberdeen”. Our new policy document “Stronger Together” for 2017 to 2022 builds on the 2017-2018 strategic business plan, thereby ensuring the continuity of the priorities we set in our last administration whilst incorporating some new priorities which are a direct response to the changing economic and social conditions the City now faces. We recognise, of course, that our priorities must be delivered within the financial parameters agreed by the Council at the Budget meeting in February 2017. Aberdeen has been the northern powerhouse of both the UK and Scottish economy in recent times, but the fall in the global oil price has seen Aberdeen’s economic contribution reduce.     Charles William Brebner (1852-1922) Charles Brebner was a well-known ship captain of Jamaican descent. I had a letter in October from his grandson, John L. Brebner in Mauritius, parts of which are excerpted below with my own additional footnotes and commentary. “May I introduce myself, I am also John Brebner from the island of Mauritius. Last week my daughter Stephanie and I were talking about my late Grand Dad Charles William Brebner Master Mariner FRGS – FRSA, a Catholic and a Freemason, he was also the first Brebner to set foot and settled here….” “On my side our roots came to a dead end in Jamaica, but I am sure it goes beyond the shores of Jamaica. Based on local experience, I believe that in the distant past a British European colonizer, a Brebner, settled in Jamaica, married or lived in concubinage with a native woman there and gave his name to his offspring and my Grand Dad was his descendent. I do not believe that a name like Brebner could be an ancestral native name of Jamaica.”i “I have not known my Grand Dad, as per his photograph I could see that he was a strong well built coloured Guy, most of his children and great grand children have fair complexions with blue/grey eyes…” “Charles William Brebner was born in 1852ii in the County of Cornwall, Lucea, Jamaica. He died in Mauritius on the 5th June 1922 and was buried at Port Louis West Cemetery, Grave Section 11 N. 318”. “As the story goes when he was a child his parents immigrated to the United States, one day he and his little sister were playing in the back garden.

From its ancient origins to medieval burghs and King Robert The Bruce, from the Jacobite connections to the expansion in the Edwardian and Victorian times, the ‘Silver City by the Golden Sands’ has a long, important, and interesting history with many of its people contributing to the wider world. The city started out as three separate royal burghs – Old Aberdeen, New Aberdeen and Torry plus the parish of Woodside – which expanded and merged together to form the city as a whole. There was a major expansion in the Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian eras as the city made its first fortunes based on fishing, granite quarrying and shipbuilding and many of the grand buildings were built during these times. It also included the main thoroughfare, Union Street, which was raised up away from the mud and dirt and built on a series of bridges – it was such a major project it almost bankrupted the city!
