Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

The collection of the source data was supported by grants to the Minnesota Population Center from the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development and the National Science Foundation. 1 Introduction Scholars in many disciplines have observed that men historically far outnumbered women among international movers. Two of geographer E.G. Ravenstein's late- nineteenth century "laws of migration" asserted that (1) short-distance migrants generally outnumbered longer distance ones, and that (2) within-country moves were usually dominated by women and between-country moves were dominated by men. Although many geographers have critiqued and extended Ravenstein's work, these two often- repeated laws have rarely been challenged since they were written in the late 1800s. Many textbooks in demography and world history presented these theories as conventional wisdom for much of the twentieth century (e.g., Peterson 1969: 264; United Nations 1979: 4; Manning 2005: 11). In the early 1980s, however, researchers at the U.S. Department of Labor and elsewhere pointed toward a "remarkable shift" in migrant gender ratios, from women constituting less than one-third of all U.S.-bound migrants in 1900 to almost one-half in the 1970s (Houston et al. -

American Lucifers: Makers and Masters of the Means of Light, 1750-1900 Abstract This dissertation examines the social history of Atlantic and American free and unfree labor by focusing on the production and consumption of the means of light from the colonial period to the end of the nineteenth century. Drawing from archives across the country, I reconstruct the ground-level experiences and struggles of the living (and dying) bringers of lights—those American lucifers—and the worlds they made in the process. I begin by arguing that colonial American deep-sea whaling voyages triggered an Atlantic street lighting revolution radiating from London, while a New England run candles-for-slave(ry) trade helped illuminate and circulate processes caught up in colonial transatlantic sugar slavery. -

Der größte Erfolg war dabei, gemessen an Platten- und Ticketverkäufen, stets Mark II beschieden. Auch die großen Hits der Band wie Highway Star, Perfect Strangers oder das weltbekannte Smoke On The Water stammen von dieser Besetzung, in anderen Konstellationen war die Gruppe verhältnismäßig unproduktiv. Die Rivalitäten zwischen Gillan und Blackmore führten immer wieder dazu, dass einer von beiden Deep Purple verließ – in der Regel der Sänger Gillan (so geschehen 1973 und 1989), den Blackmore – er war Gründungsmitglied der Formation – weniger als vollwertiges Bandmitglied, sondern vielmehr als bezahlten Sänger betrachtete, den man nach Belieben ersetzen konnte. -

TRANSFORMATION OF “OLD” SLAVERY INTO ATLANTIC SLAVERY: CAPE VERDE ISLANDS, C. 1500–1879 By Lumumba Hamilcar Shabaka A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History- Doctor of Philosophy 2013 ABSTRACT TRANSFORMATION OF “OLD” SLAVERY INTO ATLANTIC SLAVERY: CAPE VERDE ISLANDS, C. 1500–1879 By Lumumba Hamilcar Shabaka This dissertation explores how the Atlantic slave trade integrated the Cape Verde archipelago into the cultural, economic, and political milieu of Upper Guinea Coast between 1500 and 1879. The archipelago is about 300 miles off the coast of Senegal, West Africa. The Portuguese colonized the “uninhabited” archipelago in 1460 and soon began trading with the mainland for slaves and black African slaves became the majority, resulting in the first racialized Atlantic slave society. Despite cultural changes, I argue that cultural practices by the lower classes, both slaves and freed slaves, were quintessentially “Guinean.” Regional fashion and dress developed between the archipelago and mainland with adorning and social use of panu (cotton cloth). In particular, I argue Afro-feminine aesthetics developed in the islands by freed black women that had counterparts in the mainland, rather than mere creolization. Moreover, the study explores the social instability in the islands that led to the exile of liberated slaves, slaves, and the poor, the majority of whom were of African descent as part of the Portuguese efforts to organize the Atlantic slave trade in the Upper th Guinea Coast. With the abolition of slavery in Cape Verde in the 19 century, Portugal used freed slaves and the poor as foot soldiers and a labor force to consolidate “Portuguese Guinea.” Many freed slaves resisted this mandatory service. -
