My box submissions have to do with the ocean, because San Perdo is an Ocean community.

Box Submission: Mermaid- There are two images of a mermaid on either side of the box. They are swimming within waves of the ocean. Above the ocean are hills with a landscape and castles. Above that is a sky with setting suns.

Box Submission- This box is an image of ocean waves, and on one larger side is a seahorse, and on the other large side is a jellyfish. They are in ocean waves that make line patterns. Above them is a landscape with hills and castles and a sky.

Box Submission- This box has an image of Neptune on one large side, and an image of an octopus on the other large side. There is a goldfish on the smaller side. They are in a seascape of waves, and there is a backdrop of a sunset and setting suns. Statement-

My name is Katie McGuire. I am a based painter. I have a B.A. in Art from U.C. Berkeley and a M.F.A. in Painting from Claremont Graduate University. I have been teaching Drawing at for 17 years, and I have been showing my paintings in group, juried and solo shows for 20 years. In December of 2017, I completed my first utility box for the city of Los Angeles, on Wilshire and Plymouth. I will put a picture in the pictures of my work. I am interested in working on public art projects like utility boxes and murals, because I usually show my work in galleries but also love the big paintings on street boxes and murals. I also would like to reach a larger audience with my work than just the gallery world. I like the fact that public art appeals to everyone who walks by. The next paragraph is about my work in general.

My paintings are usually figures or partial portraits. I usually paint homeless people, musicians, or psychics. My work is heavily influenced by the symbolism in the tarot cards. My paintings are a form of divination, a tool to see supernatural things about the person that I am painting. I use cartoonlike drawing and unrealistic colors to create a world oscillating between dreams and reality. I use spray paint, oil paint, and sometimes collage elements to create the image. My painting is emotional or expressionistic to show the emotion of the person that I am painting. I would like to create an image of a mystical person im a mystical world. I am trying to paint the person’s soul, mood or aura. I work from photograph, but try to let the process of fantasy and intuition take over the process when I am painting. My work is influenced by Expressionism, Surrealism, the primitive and childlike drawing of CoBra, Abstract Expressionism, Bay Area Figurative, Beat Art and Symbolism.

Here are some examples of my previous art.

This is my first utility box on Plymouth and Wilshire done in for the City of Los Angeles. It is done in spray paint and acrylic paint. It was completed in December 2017. It is an enlargement of one of my paintings, “Man With Flower II.”

“Man With Flower II,” Spray paint, oil paint, and mixed media on masonite, 3’x4’

This is a portrait of a man that I took on Venice Beach sitting on a bench. Behind him is a trash can to show where he was sitting. On the bench is a rainbow to represent hope. The image has both light and dark aspects. He is in darkness, but the colors are bringing light to the situation. There is a foam glitter sticker where his heart is, and there are flowers around the trash can to show brightness from dark. The umbrella is shelter. There are plastic beads glued onto areas of the painting to enhance areas of color.

“Michael,” Spray paint and oil paint on masonite, 3’x4’

This is a portrait of my Dad, Michael, that I made after he died. It is from a photograph that I took from him when he was young. I wanted to portray that he was a smart man, and had many things going on in his mind. I took the imagery around his face from a brief experimentation with printmaking that he went through when he was young. In some of his prints, he had images of the ocean and sea creatures, castles and planets. The bird is from another print that he did. I put the images around his head, to represent his intellect full of dreams, activity and images. It is also supposed to represent him on the astral plane.

“Man In A Flied of Flowers and Arrows,” Spray paint, oil paint, and mixed media on masonite, 3’x4’

This painting is of a homeless man that I saw walking down the street in . The painting has a man standing in front of a street sign and hills in the background. There is a sign with three arrows pointing in different directions that he might be going in. There are clouds in the sky. There are some rhinestone stickers collages on the hills, on his jacket, in his hair, and around some of the flowers. There are eight flowers painted around the figure to show growth and hope for the figure. There is a sun on top of the sign with the arrows, and supposed to represent light in the darkness. There is a heart on his forehead. The viewer is supposed to wonder about the situation.

“Man In Between Two Fences,” Spray paint and oil paint on masonite, 3’x4’

This is a portrait of a homeless man that I took around my neighborhood in Koreatown. He is walking and slightly trapped in between two fences. The picture is also dark and light. There is a dark sky in the background and his face is the light of the painting. He also has a heart where his heart is and a rainbow around his pocket. A house that he doesn’t have and the smoke is coming out of the chimney. There are different types of flowers growing to represent growth and a rainbow dripping over a cloud to symbolize a new day. The sign in the background is like a street sign, and I often use them in my paintings with no writing to show them literally as a sign and to show that he is a man that is going nowhere, or for us to wonder what the sign means. There is also a cloud on his shirt to represent the gloom of his mood. My painting is trying to portray the person in a metaphysical manner. Resume
