Legal Defense-Public Defenders

California provides defense attorneys through the county Public Defender offices free of charge for those who cannot afford a private attorney. The appropriate area office may be contacted to identify a public defender or to request that a public defender be assigned. When more than one defendant is charged in a crime an Alternate Public Defender may be assigned and may be contacted through the local public defender’s office.
