MURDIRS From information received in May 1944 we learn that while Bri- tish prisoners were passing the streets of , inhabitants handed them cigarettes, food and other In reprisal the german guards fired on the crowd killing a young man aged 20 of unknown identity.

Sanuary 19 44, Germans ordered the execution of 200 prisoners detained in prison or concentration camps. From these, 33 were invalids from the Italo-Greek campaign . Their names are unknown.

The following who were detained in Levadia prisons were execu- ted on the 27/2/44 in Steni Distomon (Levadia) in reprisal for an engagement fought between Guerillas and Germans. 1) N. ARRZSTS In January 1944, Germans ill-treated many patients of the Sett. ria Sanatorium (Athens), arrested 30 men and women and sent them to prison. 300 inhabitants of 3ographou quarter (Athens) were arrested by the Germans during a night raid in January 1944 and sent to concentra- tion camp. ■ P. Papadimitriou, Athanassios Danes end K. Tsindas, were arrested by the Germans on the 17/2/44 for helping Guerillas in AspropYr ghos (Attiki) and sent to Megallo Pefko On the 28/2/44, Germans enciro:ed the Oil, wine and spirit Factories of 21oussis in order to discover arms 10 workers were arrested and sent to prison. Yoannidis, barrister, and others, were arrested by the Ga.. mans as Communists and sent to prison in Athens on tho 29/3/44. Lieut. Andonakeas, was arrested by the German S.S. troops for spying in Athens in March 1944. From the 24/3/44, German authorities in f,thens started to arrest all Jews without any distinction of nationality. 200 of Greek na- tionality were arrested in Athens and sent to Haidari concentration camp. During March 19 44, 2.000 Jews arrested in Athens and the sur- roundings were sent to Poland from the Rouf station of Athens. PIDNDEIS Constandinos and Yoonnis Berdis were robbed in Koukovaounes (Athens) by German soldiers on the 7/11/43 and all their belong ings were transported to Tatoi by car. The tenants of Spyridon Petrakou house were 14-treated and robbed in Neo Psyhiko (Athens) by German soldiers on the 8/2/44. During May 1944, robberings, 1114reatments,plunderings and boo. tinge carried out by the German soldiers were increased even in Athens. - 2 -

MURDTRS 20 prisoners who were detained in the Tripoli prisons were executed on the 17/1/44 in Ipsilli-Vrisai, Ahourion (Tripoli)- in reprisal for a wounded German officer: .. In February 1944,Trieoli town was blockaded by the Germans for a week and the inhabitants wore not allowed to go out from their houses.18 young men died from starvation and their relatives were not allowe4. to burry their bodies. During February 1944,the Commanding Officer of the German Mi11.t2 Police was killed in Pylos by unknown . In reprisal, the German authies set on firetheamall town and killed many of tho inhabitants. 81 prisoners who were detained in the Tripoli prisons were executed in Tripoli , on the 24/2/44, in reprisal for the murder of a German soldier and the destruction of a bridge by Guerillas.

• 1.000 inhabitants of Kalamas and the surroundings were arrested by the German authorities in the Ano Floros village, near Kalamas, in re- prisal for the murder of 7 German soldiers by unknown. 344 were executed._ on the 7/2/44 in Kalamas and in front of all the inhabitanta . Amongst the executed 50 were hanged out of the balconies, all the other detained were sent to Tripolis concentration camp. In the same period 250 hostages were executed in Tripoli and 127 in Sparta in reprisal for Guerilla activity. On the 29/2/44,e. German soldier entered the house of Keulas Liangri in Argos, and attempted to violate her . The latter.resisted and. the sol- dier killed her with his pistol. In Mere! 1944,40 Greeks were hanged by Germans in Teghea area in re- prisal for Guerilla activity. On the 21/3/44, 45 hostages who were detained in the Corinthos con- centration camp were executed by the Germans in reprisal for the destruction of a bridge on the railway line Atheas-Corinthas, near Aghios Theodorous. Amongst the executed 5 were hanged.

ACTS OF ARSON During Ftruary 1 944, the following villages of Meseisia were burnt down in reprisal for the murder of German . soldiers: Comoletely - Lade,Kervelli, NeohoriAristofilika,and Pithima. Pertly - no and Kato Selitsa, Almyros, Akomos,Georgitsa, -Kastanes and Longanikos.

MORDYRS On the 10/12/43, a German Motorised Unit, encircled Megallo Monastiri village, near Larissa, arrested 45 inhabitants and executed them on the spot. From recent reports received we learn that Constandinos Mies who was unsane was killed in Makrohorion (Larissa) on the In January 1 944,Germans arrested 3 old women in Vouvala village near Flasson,blinded them by pulling out their eyes with their bayonnets and burnt them alive .. On the 8/3/44, the German authorities executed 100 hostages in Larissa in reprisal for the derailment of a G erman_trainmear Tempii. 5 women were • amongst the executed . One of them. ARRESTS. The following were arrested in Larissa and sent to concentration camp/:-1)G .Oeropoules,2)Petros Krahtis 3) Fani Tsatsou,4)Dimitra Tsatsou15)Koula Tsatsou 6) Ntina Tsatsou.

ACTS OF ARSON. 22 houses of Kefalovrisson village(Elasson)and 50 out of 75 of Idanota village were set on fire by german detachments on the 14/2/44 in reprisal for guerilla activity.

CENTRAL MACEDONIA.

ILL TRYATMENTS.. On the 8/1/44,2.000 inhabitants were assembled before the Prefecture of Kilkis saking for bread and food.The Germans attempted to disperse the crowd and wounded 3 inhabitants very seriously.-

ACTS OF ARSON.- German detachments attacked Livadioh village(Olympus) on the 2212/44 and burnt down 600 houses out of 800 In reprisal for guerilla activity in the Olympus area. 515 inhabitants were lost and their fate is unknown. Taanoussa family composed of 4 persons was bayonetted by the Germans. These murderswrsr4Nd- with a blanket Irene Georgoulis and burnt her alive. On the 2 9/2/44 German detachments reinforced with Ita- lian fascists attacked Sithion or Sella village and burnt it to the ground . Out of the 250 houses, only 17 escaped complete destruction and from the 1250 inhabitants only 150 escaped, the remainder were disper- sed and their fate is unknown.• 416 inhabitants of the same village were hanged by their hands during 8 hours by Italian fascists. Gherania village was burnt to the ground by the Ger- mans on the 15/2/44 in reprisal for Guerilla activity.

WESTERN MACEDONIA

ACTS OF ARSON 8ronti, Brimidion,Himerinon and Lefkadi villages Were • partly destroyed in July 1y43. On the 15/2/44, Krania-village( Deskatis) was burnt down by the Germans, being already bombed by the Italians(March 1943).160 houses were cam- pletely destroyed. In March 1 943,Skouterna village,Servia area,was comple- tely destroyed.

EXECUTIONS.- In January 1 944,3Vangelos Lalas was executed in Didimotihon• Mankas,Theoharidis,Dontas and Vamvakas were e4ecuted in Ore- sties. A house and 2 Schools were burnt to the ground. On the 8/1/44 Spyridion Vratoudis was killed without reason out of Kilkis by a Bulgarian soldier. In March 1944, the President of the Club of Beer houses Znplo- Yees of Saloaica, cheered Greece together with those present in one of the towns establishment A pro-Bulgarian who witnessed the scene, left and returned e few minutes later together with 4 bulgerian soldiers who exe- cuted the President on the spot. (his name is not yet known).

ILL-TREATMIINTS On the 14/8/43, Coast • Koulakiotis , rural guard was beaten without reason by Bulgarian soldiers in the fields out of Kilkis• Yoannis Thimiatis, rural guard, was beaten by Bulgarian soldiers in Olympias (Halkidiki) because he bo gged them to remove their horses from the sowed fields. On the 18/11/43, W/0 of gendarmerie Pa ylos Erenidia, was • arrested for collaborating with Guerillas by Bulgarian detachment in the Gradenborion village near Salonica• His was mercilessly beaten and submitted to many trials • lie was sent by the Germans to Salonica prisons -9-

In August 1943,a bulgariar patrol noticed electric light which was coming out through a window of the Hospital of N.Moudania village (Salonica).They fired 80 times but fortunately there were no victims Liter Bulgarians entered the Hospital,searched . it and Ill treated the Personel •The Hospital was evacuated ,as the Bulgarians succesively re- peated such acts. On the 28/8/43 bulgarian soldiers entered a rural house in the • • Volvi area,111 treated the tenants,arrested 6 persons and sent them to Salonica prisons ,because a bulgarian officer was ill treated On the 25/8/43,a bulgarian soldier while riding a bicycle in Salonica met Haralambo Nikolaidi who was deaf and dumb.The latter towing to his illness did not hear the bell of the bicycle and hindered the passage of the above soldier who,in his anger ,seriously wounded NikOlaidi with his bayonnot• On the 15/9/13 bulgarian soldiers fired and seriously wounded N.Tintonis who was fishing in the Volvi Lake. On the 23/9/43,163=1a Tart flints was wounded by bulgarian sol- diers in Ierisson(Halkidiki) without reason while passing near then. , On the 8110/43, a Bulgarian detachment entered Ambela near Strymon river and under the excuse of searching hidden Guerillas earned out searohes,111-treatments etc. The inhabitants panic striken attempted to escape but the Bulgarians .fired on then and Constandinoa Stephanidis, aged 44, was seriously wounded. On the 14110/43, Christos Saltsidis was mercilessly beaten by a Bulgarian soldier because he begg ed him to remove the animals of the Bulgarian army from his sowed fields. On the 2/11/43, 2 Bulgarian soldiers met Danidi Vassili,priest, in a Caffe of Kavalarion village (Langada) approached him and in order to make fun of him, they pulled out his boar hal: by hair beating him in the meantime The priest escaped from this ordeal owing to the arrival of many peasants and 2 german soldiers who succeeded to send away the above sol- diers. The following notables of Xiloupolis village (Langada) were arrested by Bulgarian detachments and sent unclothed to prison :- D. Pashos, President of CommunLay, Heide°, School director, Potros Kali- nos • N. Stratis, Christos Kataras and Const• Harizanis • The latter attempted to escape as he thought that he was arrested in order to be executed, but the guards fired and wounded him seriously. The firing In- creased so much that all prisoners were threatened to be shot. The de- tained were submitted to an interrogation by the C•0 . of the German Mili- tary Police and it was proved that their arrest was carried out without r eason. The population panic striken escaped to Salonica• On the 20/11/43, Dim. Panelis was mercilessly beaten by Bulga- rian soldiers near Polyghiron (Halkidiki)• On the 1 9/12/43, Garifalos Garifalca , peasant, was mercilessly beaten by Bulgarian soldiers, near Yerakari village, because he refused to give them money.

VIOLATIONS On the 23/7/43, 2 Bulgarian soldiers entered the house of Argyros Pamela, aged 40, to inspect the cleaness, they asked her to go to the hayloft and there one of them violated her. On the 21/8/43, Garoufalia, wife of Yoanais Botsika, on her way back to \Trama village from the fields, was attacked by 2 Bulgarian soldiers who attempted to violate her. As she resisted, they ill-treated . her and left her in a very poor condition to return to the village. In September 1943, a Bulgarian N.C.O. slating in a . restaurant of Neohori.village, asked where was the N.C. ; a young girl aged 12, °ate him the place. As she was ready to go, the Bulgarian N.C.O. attempted to violate her . The girl however, succeeded to free herself and to call for help. The Bulgarian fearing reprisals released har• -10-

ROBBERINGS- PLUNDERS On the 2/8/43, Yoannis Melas, Christos Liakos . and Coast. Costandelis, Peasants, were robbed by Bulgarian soldiers on the main road, Nae Moudania-Nea Patidea. On the 25/8/43, Ghristodoulos Katsotis, peasant was robbed by Bulgarian soldiers on the main road Portaria-. As he resisted when they attempted to take off his gold ring, they wounded. his hands with their bayonnets. In August 1943, Bulgarian soldiers looted the coastal area of Balkidiki. The following are amongst the victims :- Dim. Mittas, Ioannis Mitsakis,shePherds Alekos Katsimbiras, C eorgios Tsanta- ridis,Gerassimos stefanou,Aristofanis Svourtsanis and Nicolas Liantas. On the 2/9/43, Ioannis Litreglou and Christos Gherakoudis were robbed by a Bulgarian 2/ Lieut . in the Dionisson (Balki- diki) sUarter who took off their monay,tobacco,food etc. - On the . 22/8/43, Bulgarian soldiers entered the house of Eleni Soulkou, widow,in Nee Trighlia and oarred offood stuffs etc. On the 29/8/43, Bulgarian soldiers started firing. in N .Syllata (Halkidiki) and the inhabitants panic striken were compelled to comfine themselves in their houses. Meanwhile, the above soldiers . looted all poultry-yards of the village. , On the night of 8-9/12/43, Bulgarian soldiers attacked the flock stations of Filirou village (Salonica) . D imitrios Hri- sohou, Georgios Errikos, Stergios Metzinis,Nicolas Bassiatas,.Dimitri Bassiatas, Dim. Krinas; Theodoros Tarassidis and Christoforos Karypidis peasants, were looted and ill-treated for resisting. On the 18/12/43, Bulgarian soldiers entered tho butcher shop of Georgics Hasaapaki in I, .ngae_a ar.d took off the livestock.

WESTERN MACEDONIA

MURDERS On the 29/9/43, Serandis Kersakis was arrested and executed by Bulgarians in Kastora area . His wife Hristina Karsaki was also killed by them in a savage way. In November 1943, Themistooli Rozes was arrested and executed by Bulgarians in the Krystalopighi village (Kastoria). On the 10/12/43, Bulgarian soldiers fired without reason on Ath. Pousdorkas and Alex . Karalis peasants, while passing tho Bulgarian outpost in tho Mesohori village (Florina) . Pousderkas was killed and Karelia was seriously wounded.

..v ARRESTS On the 4/2/44, 000r tsion Levassidis and Dimitri Paleologos, school teachers wore arrested by a Bulrian dotT.chment in the Kate Ydrousse village.

ILL-TREATMENTS Segt. major of gendarmerie, Fmnanuel Lazouvardos, Miltiadis Tsaras and Dimitri Papadimitriou both gendarmes, were wounded by BUlgerian soldiers in Cie railway station of Annenohori. On the 15/11/43, 0:sa Vlahon, was wounded by a Bulgarian soldier in the Liana village.

PLUNDERS From Yenuary 1944, Bulgarian detachments using as excuse the pursuit and annihilation of Guerilla groups in the areas of Macedonia, plundered and looted completely all villages of Western Mace, . denim . The peasants of the villages of Florina area suffered most parti- cularly from these plunders . Herebelow we give some examples of robbed peasants by Bulgarian detachments. On the 5/2/44, Const . Pessemera 2nd/Lieut . of cavalry: was robbed by Bulgarian soldiers in the Tropeouhos vtllage . (Florina), On the 6/2/44, Nioolas Politidis and Stavros Tantzis peasants were also robbed in the same village. Oh the 2/2/44, Bulgarian soldiers threatening with their pistols compelled the inhabitants of Halkidiki village Felerna; to hand them various food- stuffs. • . In February 1944, N,Eiripidis, G. Kosmidie and st- Papadopeulos inhabitants of Heidi village (Florina) were stolen by Bulgarian detach- ment from their livestock and fortune.

EASTTRN MACET)ONI.

Information found in this paragraph gives a picture of the scale of atrocities committed by the Bulgarians during the second six month period of 1943. All those who escaped from the Bulger() occupied areas, narrate the desperate position of the remained Greek population. The annihilation of the Greek race in tr,e areas of Eastern Mace- donia and Thrace took.a systematic end official form e The Bulgarian State uses every mean and try to annihilate every Greek. The population cannot remain under Bulgarian occupation . The pro-. hibition of any Greek to exercise even the smallest profession, the re- quisition of production, tho military resuisitions of food,vehicles,live- stock etc . without paying any indemnities and the political mobilisation of specialists of produation, the terrorism by executiaglarreating,i11- treating, violatingplooting,plundering and taxing, all together compell the remaining Greeks to abandon alltheir properties and take refuge to territories which are not yet occupied by Bulgarians.

MURDERS.- On the 14/8/43,D imitries Theoharidis aged 31 was compelled to leave Serras with his family in order to find a safer area in Greece . 24 persons more followed Theeharldi family .While crossing Strymon river ,they were noticed by bulgarian scldiers who attacked them. From this attack,the following were killed- 1) Efmorfia Theoharidi aged 28 2) Mi88 Voulgari EVangolou,fromVolos 3) Soultanitsa,Theoharidis daughter,aged 3 4) penhala Pashalis. daughter with her 2 small children 5) Vassilios Hatzigrigoriou 8) Hristos Hatzigrigoriou,aged-9 7) .Kalliopi Demballapaged 34,prognant 8)Thoodoros 9) Georgioe Tsitzis from Voznikau,Serras. From the 24 refugers only 8 succeeded to escape hiding themse/- 4c-D :or several days in tho mountains and crevices. Hristos Efstathiadispinhabitant of Serras:was compelled to cross Strymon river with his family in order to take zefuge in the germane- occupied area of Greece.He decided to do so as the Bulgarians demanded his 18 year old daughter.Bulgarian soldiers,however,noticed his crossing and fired on them .His. daughter Aged 18 and his son aged 8 were killed.The father was not allowed to take the bodies of his children. On the 417/43,Georgios Polyzas aged $2 from Paliokomi(Serras) was killed while attempting to escape from the bulgaro occupied area near the gulf Of Strymonikou. In August 1943,IliaArvanitidi and Georgiou Anagnostaki fa- miliespAth.Triantafillidis,priest,Ath.Arambatzis, Nikolas Kritomenis, Antonios Arvanitidis,Konst. Tahtsiettotal of 20 persons were arrested by thebulgarian authorities in the Kounarghia village(Serrae) for intending to escape from the bulgaro occupied Sreece.They were sent to the bulge- rian outpost of Adelfikou where Konst.Triantafillidis priest and 2 .others were killed by Bulgarians on the spot.The women and children were released except Efthalia Papoutsidou and Dimitroula Dimitrakaki the youngest amongst the women who were violated. -12-

On the 15/ 8/45,a bulgarian gendarme was killed by unknown. Bulgarian authorities carried out the following reprisals against the population of Kavalla area:- Dim.Koletsis,Hristos Rantis,Stergiannis Triantafillos, Trian- tafillos and the postman were executed in the Pcristereon village-Be- sides 9 others and 2 young girls were arrested and their fate is unknown. 9 persons were murdered in the Haideton village.Amongst them are Nerantzis Nerantzopoulos,Mantziris and Hristofilos.. In the Keramoti village 2 persons were killed. Athanassios and Aristidis Boulaxis,brothers,their father and the son of Aristidis Boulaxis were arrested in the Nee Karye village and their fate is unknown. The murders ,arrests and ill treatments were carried out in the above area by a bulgarian motorised unit-The Commanding Officer of Hris. soupolis gendarmerie ordered that the bodies must remain unburned for 2 days in the place of their execution.From reports received we learn that the above commanding officer executed Nerantzin Nerantzopoulon. In August 1943,300 hostages working in Bulgaria were killed from an explosion in Kaula.Angelos Tollios,Athanassios Tzimourtas and Konst. Mihalelis were amongst the victims. In October 1945 Timoleon Ioannidis was arrested in Drama and executed near Hriston village,for poseessing arms. Konstantinos Margettis was executed without trial in Dafnon vii-. lege for the same reason.

ILL TRFATMENTS. Ioannis Mails aged 45,merchantp!as robbed by bulgarlan soldiers in Serras and beaten so hard that they broke his foot. Di, ;Aries Babaropoulos,grocer,and his father were merciles- sly beaten by bulgrians in Banitsa(Drama) in order to abandon . their pro- fession and succeeded to escape from slaughtering by handing their fortunes to them. Eleanthis Avramidis aged 47 and Kleanthis Hatzinikolaidis workers of Lignite mines,wore mercilessly beaten in S erras . The latter was sent to prison. The following members of Dimitriou Sknrlatou family, aged 38,farmer were mercilessly beaten on the 22/6/43 in the Sidirokastron Railway Station:-Dimitrios Skarlatos, Hrissoula Skarlatos,their childrent- Georgios,Margionitsa,Fotika,Katina and the mother Ekaterini Skarlatou,the brothers Nikolas,Athanassibs,Maria and Mihail Skarlatos. -13-

In Sidirokastron,during 1943,a bulgarian gendarme kicked Noula Kapotevalti,who was pregnant, for speaking greek .She avorted and was lef. In a very poor condition. In August 1943,Nikolas Karakitsos,Theodoros Varrinis,Errikos Raptis and 2 otjtrs attempted to cross Strymon river.Bulgarian soldiers noticed them and fired.Theo.Varrinis and Errikos Raptis were seriously wounded. - An old woman named TheodoJsia Karanikola was beaten by bulgarian gendarmes for 2 days in the Nerofraktis village(Drama .because her son N ikolas escaped in order to avoid to be sent as hostage to Bulgaria. The mother and father of .Georgios Nerantzani wore also merciles- ly beaten for the some reason. Papastefanos Kotronis,priest of Nerofrakti village was merciles- sly beaten by bulgarian gendarmes and soldiers. The following ware narrated by a refugee from Baritameni village (Drama) concerning the attitude of the Bulgarian authorities to greeks:.. On the 5/7/43,the bulgarian Commanding Officer of an outpost near- Baritomeni village ordered Mih.Kikos to leave his house with his family in an hour timo,because his relatives arriving from Bulgaria should be established there.As Kikos replied that . his family was composed of 8 persons and that he had many tools,livestook etc . ...,he was kicked and threatened that if in an hour time the house waa not abandonned with everything in it ,all members should bo machine gunned.Kikos and his fa- mily were compelled to do so and on their way while crossing Ahino river bulgarian soldiers fired on them.Ono of the members was killed and the body was seen to be carried away by the current of the river. On the 4/9/43,50 women and children were arrested by a bul- garian patrol in the Nerofrakti village and sent to prison where they were beaten during the whole day. TakIs oidis,Takis Radis and Danis were arrested in Drama during September 1943,sent to prison and ill treated for helping poor greek families. In August 1943,Stergios Trihopoulos was arrested for unknown reason in Kavalla and sent to prison for 3 months where he was savagely tortured.

VIOLATIONS.- Efstratioa Yannitselas and his wife Styliani aged 30, were arrested by Bulgarian solditrs in the Aderfikon village and conducted to the Communal Offices where the wife was violated in front of the husband and the latter mercilessly beaten, In August 1943, the wife of Dimitri Theodoridou, inhabitant Of Sorras,was taken to the fields by Bulgarian gendarmes. There, 20 Bul- garian soldiers and the policeman of Serras Police Station violates her sucoesively. In August 1943, 4 young girls wore violated by bulgarian : refugees ih the Evanghelistla quarter of Sidirokastron.

PLUNDTIRS The robbering of Greek inhabitants is carried out by the public employees and kondarmes. The custom authorities of Rodop nlis and Porrion rob daily the passing refugees to the Germano occupied area of don in. In October 1943, Photini Kalsaika, Manio Niooladu, Dimitrieu Hadziacogiou family, Eleonora Leondiadou, Spyros Makaveos, Fti Constantini- dou, Mergaritis, Mashidis, Dimos Papadicolaou, Vaghia and Aldine Baxeva- aid= were robbed by the Customs employees and gendarmes of Porrion. Bulgarian authorities applying as excuse the law of requisition, confiscated without anyindemnity tho entire fortune of those who obtained permission to go from the Bulgaro occupied territories . In August 1943, Bulgarian soldiers asked from Tfstathios Arva - nitakis inhabitant of Serras either to pay a sum or to hand his . 2 daughters. PERMS.- Athanassios KalafidiS aged 80 was arrested by Bulgarians during August 1943 in Xanthi and was tortured and beaten so hard that he died from his wounds few days after his release .• In September 1943,Fotios Sideras,Dim.Oalakis and 2 others were killed by a bulgarian detachment in the Ionikqn village(Xanthi). Panagiotis Hristopoulos and Oeorgios Rangos were murdered by bulgerian soldiers in Alexandroupolis.

VIOLATIONS.- In Volonin( Xanthi) terrorism is amazing.Refugees narrate that bulgarian soldiers and gondarmes enter the houses asking for women.E4doxia Apostolou was attacked by 3 bulgarian soldiers but as she resisted ,they ill treated and left her in a Very poor condition. 3 young girls Were violated during the same period by bul.. garian soldiers in the Naghikon village. Domias Batzakidou was attacked and violated by bUlgarian soldiers in Hisnistra .Her husband attempted to save her but was mercilessly.. beaten. The 2 daughters of Stef.Soupiadou were violated by bulgariana in the same village.

BOSTAGIS.(FASTERN MACEDONIA-THRACE) In August 1943,Petropoulos,physician and Konst.Kazantzis public employee were arrested an Serras as hostages and sent to Bulgaria. In September 1943,208 hostages were arrested in Drama and sent to Bulgaria. Hronidis,dental surgeon,Dinos physician and X.Stefanidis were amongst the arrested as hostages. 38 young men were arrested in Katsikari and Flefthere vil- lages and sent as hostages to Bulgaria. In Kavalla,only 5 greek priests remained.They were arrested and sent as hostages for unknown destination. 30 inhabitants were arrested in Stavroupoli during August 1943 and sent as hostages to a concentration camp in Bulgaria. Georgios,Maghissalis,M.3oumboulinis,Theo.Karagapis,Stefe Symeonidis,Dim. Oialamas,Oeorgios Karathaaassis,Dim.Fiasakfs,Oeorgios Artopiosjossif Lazaridis and Zak Kaze wore amongst the hostages arrested in Xanthi during the . same period and sent to Bulgaria. Aristidis Hadziantonoglou, Stamatios Stamatiadis, Evangeloa Anthoghalaktidis,Adamidis and Oharalambos Naroglou were amongst the 22 hoe. tages who were arrested in Komotini on tho 27/8/43 and sent to a Bulgarian concentration camp. On the 24/8/43 ) Costandinidis, tobacco merchant, Theologis Constandinidis, Athanassios Theodoridia, barrister, Frederic Astridis, lbanhis Kaikas, Panayottis Geraesimou and Solon Economidis yere amongst the 13 hostages arrested in Komotini. 300 hostages were arrested a few days later in the same town and sent to Bulgaria. • Anestis Tsanakas and Angelos Tolios were arrested as how stages on the 8/10/43 in the Vitasti villagcPangeon) and sent to Bulgaria. In October 1 943,Alexandros Toumbanidis and Dimitrios Sidiropoulos were arrested as hostages in Sappas village(Komotini) and sent to Bulgaria. Bulgarians in order to apply their plan of annihilation of the greek population lathe occupied areas by them,arrest amongst the inhabitants the intellectuals and notables of the area . These arrested are considered as if they were murder° and aro sent as hostages to Bulgaria.. In fact ,they are passing through hardships tworking 14 hours daily,starving,unclothed and are condemned by the bulgarian state to die. COMPUISCRY LABOUR(EASTFRN MAOFDONIA-THRACE).-

The compulsory labobr is one of the hardest measure a taken by the bulgarian State for the annihilation of the greelc population. Since the occupation of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace,this measure was applied on the excuse of mobilisation(see 13111.0.34035).- The remaining young men were called up personally during the second semestre 1943 and sent to Bulgaria. The attitude of the bulgarian officers and soldiers towards tho mobilised is barbarous ,the work conclitions are hard and their nou- rishment is very poor .Thy wear bulgarian military uniforms and are sent to the interior of Bulgaria for hard labour without any distinction of farmerspintellectuals,scientistmerchants etc . .. .Those calls were very oftenly addressed to young men aged 15-17 and men aged 50,80 in order to obtain the necessary required number.Bulgariansare not interested for the physical end hygienic conditions of the called up. Herebelow we give a numerical list of the called up per areas:. In August 1943 in the Horteron village(Sidirokastron):20 persons In Sidirokastron : 50 persons. In Serras the men aged 20-23 were called upend sent to Koula for compulsory labour. In Porria the mon aged 18,1 9 ,20 wore called up. In August 300 persons were sent from Kavella to Bulgaria for compulsory labour. 40 persons were arrested from Elefthere,KotsMari and Noes Peramos villages and sent to the bulgarian eparchios of the Danube river for compulsory labour. In August 1943,2500 young men were sent from Xanthi to Ano Tzouninghia for compulsory labour. 50 young men aged 15-17 were called up in Defnan village and sent to Bulgariae 7 young men were sent from Komnino(Xanthi) village to Bul- garia for compulsory labour. In August 1943,the young men born in 1922-23 were called up in Komotini and sent to Momtonlov-Orant(Kirtzali). In November 1943,133 persons wore arrssted in Xanthi and sent to Bulgaria for hard labour. On the 24/10/43,100 inhabitants of Komotini were arrested and sent to Bulgaria for compulsory labour -16-

ARRYSTS. Symeon Sarina, Stavros Sarina,Vassilios Hondrpb,Anastassios or Pittas Kountouzoglou were amongst the arrested in Kastelorizon by the Italians for their greek feelings . They were cOndemned by the Italian military Martial Court in Rhodes and sent to prison in the N. Italy. The following were sent to prison in Italy from Rhodes for unknown reason.(In Bui.C.394t is mentined that they were sent to: prison for National activity):-
