"Diversity In Europe – a common voice for a sustainable development" Pro-ecological Transport Solutions ATHENS – GREECE Pro-ecological Transport Solutions in Chaidari, Athens Pro-ecological Transport Solutions Greece THE MAIN SOURCES OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION IN CHAIDARI-ATHENS Climate change has happened in the past but never at this rate. Current rates of change are faster than the time required for species to counter-evolve. Greece is considered a Mediterranean "hot spot" because it's so vulnerable to climate change. One top scientist warns if the country's greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced, the country will experience even more extreme weather-related events. In the last few years Greece has suffered from drought, heat waves, fires and floods. A study from National Observatory shows if greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate, it will cause temperatures to increase as much as 7 degrees by 2071. This will severely affect water levels. In the last 20 years rainfall has decreased 20 percent, and Greece has experienced drought for the last two years. Athens produces more "greenhouse gases" per person than cities like Paris, London and Beijing, and emissions of the Greek capital almost equivalent to those of New York! – "The forest is a mediator of better environmental conditions when it exists and worsening of the situation when it disappears." Since 1990 greenhouse gas emissions have risen 25 percent in Greece. The interest in renewable energy projects in Greece has been high. But going green has been held back until now because of bureaucratic procedures for companies in a country rich in natural resources. 3 Pro-ecological Transport Solutions Greece POLLUTION AND NOISE IN CHAIDARI- A FIRST APPROACH The main anthropogenic sources of pollutants emitted to the air are: vehicles industry heating home consumption The primary pollutants are: CO NO SO2 hydrocarbons The secondary pollutant are : NO2 O3 In summary, the problems of our place are: 1. Raise of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the period 1993-1999 up to 17%. 2. Enormous raise of population in Athens (1/3 of Greeks are leaving in Athens) 3. Minimization of Vegetation - Free space (Athens: 2,55 m2 per inhabitant rest European countries: 8 ~ 10 m2) st 4. Enormous concentrations of ozone (O3) (1 in Europe). 5. Large volume of vehicles on incomplete network traffic - National road 6. Chaidari proximate to the industrial area of Eleusis. 7. Geographical configuration of Chaidari (narrow entrance to Athens) The municipality of Haidari, as shown by the map is degraded on air pollution and noise around the wider city. This region presents particular problems partly because of its proximity to the industrial area of Eleusis and secondly because of the existence of a large part of the road linking the capital area to the western regions Attica and the Peloponnese. These sources of pollution and contribute significantly to the burden of the atmosphere in the Municipality of Haidari. Another important topographic feature of the area is the communication channel from Dafni to Eleusis, through which it can transfer and diffusion of a 4 Pro-ecological Transport Solutions Greece large number of pollutants from industrial sites of Eleusis to the area of Chaidari. The map of the area shows the location of scenic peaks of Mount Egaleo as well as the opening(the arrow) through which it can transport pollutants Our country has legislated for the pollutants sulfur dioxide(SO2), smoke, nitrogen dioxide(NO2), Lead (Pb) and ozone (O3) air quality limits, based on relevant directives established in European Union Table : Limits of emergency measures. Changes in behavior can reduce emissions greenhouse. Our main thrust is to raise awareness among city residents, but also a change in attitude of factories in the area to help to combat climate change. Everybody can contribute to the fight against climate change A. We proposed in Municipality of Chaidari 1. Promoting Public Transport 2. Actions for energy savings in public buildings 3. Increase use of renewable energies (green roof and bioclimatic) 4. Information campaigns and public awareness(Brochure Seminars) 5. promote recycling 6. traffic network redesign to reduce the volume of car traffic 11 Pro-ecological Transport Solutions Greece B. Participation in tree reforestation in “Pikilo” mountain C. Participate in global actions on climate (Earth Hour 26 of March) We suggest: On 26 March 2011 at 8:30 pm local time, people around the world will signal their concern about our planet and celebrate their commitment to action by turning their lights off during Earth Hour. Turning off your lights at 8.30PM on March 26 2011 wherever you are in the world and sign up to let us know you will be taking part. 12 Pro-ecological Transport Solutions Greece D. Our school have cooperation with environmental NGO , as WWF, ACTION AID. British Council, Climate Advocates E. Cooperation with the environmental association OIKOPOLIS in common action as cycling, walking, sharing knowledge, ideas and dreams. F. Organized painting exhibition about climate change with prises. All the students, parents, teachers have the opportunity to vote for the winners. 13 Pro-ecological Transport Solutions Greece G. Participation in the programme “The power of ten” http://thepoweroften.gr for reducing school’s energy British Council's Climate Advocates are organizing an innovative educational programme in 10 schools in central Athens which aims to encourage students to reduce their school’s energy consumption by 10% in 10 weeks!. It is pulling out all the stops to cut 10% of their emissions within a year, helping them save on energy and bringing the issue to life in the classroom. With climate change, everyone talks about long-term targets: Britain, for example, has committed to an 80% cut by 2050, and at least 34% by 2020. But scientists say it won’t be possible to meet these targets without the right action now – and that means cuts of around 10% in the very near future. Daily Consumption of 1st Gymnasium of Chaidari on 02-03-2011 14 Pro-ecological Transport Solutions Greece H. Action of 4 weeks ( changing our daily habits ) For 4 weeks all the pupils are trying to change their daily habits collecting Eco-Points. All the family is involved. 15 Pro-ecological Transport Solutions Greece I.
