The Scagliola altar frontal in Canton Ticino guidelines for diagnostic and conservation Starting from the second decade of the 18th Century, in Canton Ticino and in the nearby Italian region, there was an extraordinary diffusion of the Scagliola technique for the realization of altar frontals. The Scagliola was deeply studied from an historical and artistic point of view, but the original technique, the material used and the degradation process have never been sistematically investigated. For this reason, the Conservation- restoration course has developed a research project in order to collect useful information and fill the gap of knowledge that currently makes difficult the implementation of conservation treatments. The project is divided into four phases: Fig.1: Sessa, Church of San Martino. Photo A. Heitmann, Catalogo Fig.2: Monte Carasso, Church of Sant’Andrea. Photo A. MONN, 2006.
