University of Tsukuba is located in Tsukuba City (population approx. 230,000), Ibaraki Prefecture about 60 kilometers northeast of Metropolitan Tokyo and about 40 kilometers northwest of Narita International Airport. In Tsukuba Science City, located in the heart of Tsukuba City, there are approximately 60 research institutions where more than Chapter 1 20,000 researchers are engaged in research activities, making it one of Japan’s leading academic cities. Located in the north is Mount Tsukuba, a renowned mountain in the Kanto area, and to the east is Kasumigaura, Japan’s second largest lake. The entire surrounding area is designated as a quasi-national park. Thus, the university is located in an environment where the beauty of nature can be enjoyed all year around. In summer, the climate is hot and humid, and in winter, snow falls two to three times. In winter in particular, a strong, dry northerly wind called the “Tsukuba- oroshi” blows down from Mount Tsukuba and temperatures can fall below zero. Please be sure to bring warm cloth- ing to protect you from the cold. Chapter 2 Chapter 3 University of Tsukuba Area Tsukuba sta. Chapter 4 4 筑波大学のロケーション筑波大学は、首都東京から北東に約60km、新東京国際空港（成田空港）から北西に約40km に位置する茨第１章城県つくば市（人口約23 万人）にあります。つくば市の中核にある筑波研究学園都市には、約60 にも上る研究機関があり、2万人を超える研究者が活動している、日本でも有数の学術都市を形成しています。また北に来日前の準備は関東の名峰である筑波山、東には日本第2 位の面積の霞ヶ浦があり、その一帯が国定公園に指定されており、四季を通じて美しい自然を楽しめる環境です。気候は、夏期は高温多湿で、冬期には2 ～3 回程度の降雪があります。特に冬は「筑波おろし」と呼ばれる強い乾いた北風が吹き、冷え込むことがありますので、服装など寒さに備えた準備をしてください。第２章来日後第３章滞在中第４章帰国前 5 The campus of the University of Tsukuba is located between Gakuen-Higashi Odori and Gakuen-Nishi Odori, which run through Tsukuba City from north to south, and is divided into five areas: North Area, Central Area, South Area, West Area, and Kasuga Area. The five campus areas of the university grounds, which run 5 kilometers from north to south and 1 kilometer from east to west, are linked by a circular road called the Campus Loop Road. A pedestrian and bicycle path called the “Pedestrian” runs through the five campus areas from north to south, and ex- tends as far as the center of Tsukuba Science City, located at the south of the university. Students living in dormitories Chapter 1 in the North Area, South Area and Kasuga Area can commute to classes using the University Loop-line on-campus bus, or the Pedestrian to travel by bicycle or on foot. Our campus is opened to the public and is used as a venue for international and domestic academic exchanges, community cultural activities, social and sports events, and a vari- ety of other events. Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 6 筑波大学の筑波キャンパスは、つくば市を南北に縦断する学園東大通りと学園西大通りに挟まれて位置し、北地区、中地区、南地区、西地区、春日地区の５つの地区に分かれています。南北に５キロ、東西に１キロの大学敷地を仕切る５つの地区は、ループ道路と呼ばれる環状の学内道路で結ばれています。また、ペデス第１章トリアンと呼ばれる遊歩道・自転車道が５つの地区を南北に貫いて、大学の南に位置する学園都市の中心街まで達しています。北地区、南地区及び春日地区の宿舎に居住する学生は、筑波大学循環バス又はペデストリアンを利用して自転車や徒歩で通学しています。このキャンパスは広く社会に対して開かれており、国内来日前の準備外の学術交流、市民の教養活動、社会体育行事等にも利用されています。第２章来日後第３章滞在中第４章帰国前 7 Chapter 1 Before arrival in Japan Ａ Visas Chapter 1 １ Status of residence and Visas As a general rule, to enter Japan, foreigners must hold a valid passport issued by the government of their home country and a visa issued by the Japanese government. Once you have been accepted by the university, you will need to take procedures to obtain a visa issued by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in his/her home country (under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). A visa is a form of recommendation that attests there are no obstacles to the entry and stay of the foreign holder who intends to enter Japan and is merely one requirement for requesting to disembark.
