Next weekend, the Second Collection will be taken up for Damien House in Guayaquil, Ecua- dor. Damien House is a home / refuge for per- sons affected by Hansen ’s disease (leprosy). It is named after Fr. Damien who died of this dis- ease when there was no cure. Today there is a cure and Damien House provides 24/7 care for those who are the marginalized in society. In today ’s culture, the human person lacks a definition. This has given rise to many people lacking an identity. They see themselves as a blank canvas that they can do and be whatever they want. The culture pressures people to become what they truly are not. Most people lack the self - understanding to make such a decision, especially at a young age. It is the sad reality that people think they have to create themselves and give themselves a purpose. This has been absolutely dev- astating to our society, especially for the young people. The human person really does have a pur- pose and identity even before he or she is born. It is not based on what we do or have accomplished but is what our Creator has given to us. We learn from the Church that we become adopted sons or daughters of God our Father through baptism. Each person in their own and unique way according to our Creator ’s design. To repay God what He has done for us, our life ’s purpose is to love and serve Him in this life so as to live happily forever with Him in Heaven. Just knowing this, fixes so many problems that are facing our world today and allows God to define us, not the world.
