Chapter 5 Questions ANSWERS From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

1. Claudia and Jamie have different views about many things, even though they are from the same family. Create a double bubble map in order to show their differences and similarities on different topics. Remember to make sure that your double bubble has at least four topics on each side and is written with one to one correspondence.

2. Do you think that the children were homesick? How is this evident in the book?

If you said that you do think the children were homesick, it is important that you support your answer with information from the book. For example:

Jamie was homesick because he wanted to be with his family and have to take care of himself. Claudia is homesick because missed being with her family. I know this because Jamie asked the question and both became quiet. Or Jamie is the only one homesick, because he asked if Claudia if she was homesick. 3. James had a good definition for homesickness. He said, “…homesickness is like sucking your thumb. It’s what happens when you’re not very sure of yourself.” How would you define “homesickness”?

This question is your personal opinion but it still needs to be supported by information from the story. 4. How would you begin to research the authenticity of “”? Like Jamie and Claudia, I would begin by researching works of art created by Michelango.

5. Jamie compared “organized” and “free” thinking on page 85. How are these two things different? Organized thinking is what you are trying to think about, free thinking is what your head thinks about on its own.
