    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 17 December 2019 DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE NAMES NEW VICAR FOR HISPANIC MINISTRY AND EVANGELIZATION ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NEW YORK – December 17, 2019 – The Diocese of Rockville Centre (drvc.org) announced that Idente Missionary Father Luis Miguel Romero, pastor of the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Hempstead, has been appointed Vicar of Hispanic Ministry and Evangelization, Diocese of Rockville Centre. Father Romero will continue to serve as Pastor of Our Lady of Loretto. “Father Luis Romero is a global Churchman who lives the Idente Missionary charism in an inspirational way,” said Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of Rockville Centre. “His pastoral, formational and evangelizing leadership at Our Lady of Loretto will translate well into his diocesan leadership as the Vicar for Hispanic Ministry and Evangelization. He also has an exceptional capacity, with his extensive academic background in religion and science, to address how the truths of our Catholic faith in regard to the Gospel of Life, Catholic Social Justice teaching and the Church’s advocacy in history of ethical scientific development need to be brought directly and compellingly into the public square.” The Vicar for Hispanic Ministry and Evangelization cooperates with the Bishop of Rockville Centre to promote the full participation of the Hispanic Faithful in the life of the Church. Raphael is best known for his Madonnas (see photograph) and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican in Rome. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Early years at Urbino. Raphael was the son of Giovanni Santi and Magia di Battista Ciarla; his mother died in 1491. His father was, according to the 16th-century artist and biographer Giorgio Vasari, a painter “of no great merit.” He was, however, a man of culture who was in constant contact with the advanced artistic ideas current at the court of Urbino. He gave his son his first instruction in painting, and, before his death in 1494, when Raphael was 11, he had introduced the boy to humanistic philosophy at the court. Urbino had become a centre of culture during the rule of Duke Federico da Montefeltro, who encouraged the arts and attracted the visits of men of outstanding talent, including Donato Bramante, Piero della Francesca, and Leon Battista Alberti, to his court. Although Raphael would be influenced by major artists in Florence and Rome, Urbino constituted the basis for all his subsequent learning. Furthermore, the cultural vitality of the city probably stimulated the exceptional precociousness of the young artist, who, even at the beginning of the 16th century, when he was scarcely 17 years old, already displayed an extraordinary talent.

Raphael’s Esterhazy Madonna (1508) Museum of Fine Arts Budapest, 2017, Csanád Szesztay By sheer coincidence (or providence, as the artists themselves would have believed), two large, monographic Old Master exhibitions in Vienna have been organised with very similar aims: to probe the artistic practices that resulted in unique, instantly recognisable painted works. The two artists, separated from each other by a century, might not at first seem comparable, but the investigations by the curatorial teams have revealed a great deal about the artists’ analogous thinking and working methods. Raphael at the Albertina (until 7 January 2018), in a new version of the show that premiered earlier this year at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, runs simultaneously with Rubens: the Power of Transformation at the Kunsthistorisches Museum (until 21 January 2018, then at the Städel, Frankfurt, 8 February-21 May 2018). The Raphael show, with 130 drawings and 18 paintings arranged chronologically, places the artist’s visual thinking and conceptual processes to the fore, using works to trace Raphael’s development from primo pensiero to completed paintings (the Oxford version was of drawings only), a survey of the artist’s entire career.
