  • Becoming Christian: Personhood and Moral Cosmology in Acholi South
Becoming Christian: Personhood and Moral Cosmology in Acholi South Sudan Ryan Joseph O’Byrne Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Department of Anthropology, University College London (UCL) September, 2016 1 DECLARATION I, Ryan Joseph O’Byrne, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where material has been derived from other sources I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Ryan Joseph O’Byrne, 21 September 2016 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines contemporary entanglements between two cosmo-ontological systems within one African community. The first system is the indigenous cosmology of the Acholi community of Pajok, South Sudan; the other is the world religion of evangelical Protestantism. Christianity has been in the region around 100 years, and although the current religious field represents a significant shift from earlier compositions, the continuing effects of colonial and early missionary encounters have had significant impact. This thesis seeks to understand the cosmological transformations involved in all these encounters. This thesis provides the first in-depth account of South Sudanese Acholi – a group almost entirely absent from the ethnographic record. However, its largest contributions come through wider theoretical and ethnographic insights gained in attending to local Acholi cosmological, ontological, and experiential orientations. These contributions are: firstly, the connection of Melanesian ideas of agency and personhood to Africa, demonstrating not only the relational nature of Acholi personhood but an understanding of agency acknowledging nonhuman actors; secondly, a demonstration of the primarily relational nature of local personhood whereby Acholi and evangelical persons and relations are similarly structured; and thirdly, an argument that, in South Sudan, both systems are ultimately about how people organise the moral fabric of their society.

A Lexicon of Alchemy by Martin Rulandus the Elder Translated by Arthur E. Waite John M. Watkins London 1893 / 1964 (250 Copies) A Lexicon of Alchemy or Alchemical Dictionary Containing a full and plain explanation of all obscure words, Hermetic subjects, and arcane phrases of Paracelsus. by Martin Rulandus Philosopher, Doctor, and Private Physician to the August Person of the Emperor. [With the Privilege of His majesty the Emperor for the space of ten years] By the care and expense of Zachariah Palthenus, Bookseller, in the Free Republic of Frankfurt. 1612 PREFACE To the Most Reverend and Most Serene Prince and Lord, The Lord Henry JULIUS, Bishop of Halberstadt, Duke of Brunswick, and Burgrave of Luna; His Lordship’s mos devout and humble servant wishes Health and Peace. In the deep considerations of the Hermetic and Paracelsian writings, that has well-nigh come to pass which of old overtook the Sons of Shem at the building of the Tower of Babel. For these, carried away by vainglory, with audacious foolhardiness to rear up a vast pile into heaven, so to secure unto themselves an immortal name, but, disordered by a confusion and multiplicity of barbarous tongues, were ingloriously forced. In like manner, the searchers of Hermetic works, deterred by the obscurity of the terms which are met with in so many places, and by the difficulty of interpreting the hieroglyphs, hold the most noble art in contempt; while others, desiring to penetrate by main force into the mysteries of the terms and subjects, endeavour to tear away the concealed truth from the folds of its coverings, but bestow all their trouble in vain, and have only the reward of the children of Shem for their incredible pain and labour.

I regularly meet people who are surprised to learn that leadership is an important part of success. It’s true. Whatever we do in life, our personal development depends on our growth as leaders. All human institutions need to have leaders. We know this is true whether that institution is a church, nation, business, school, television station, or a family. The world prizes leadership. Influence, riches, and power have been claimed by leaders who, by virtue of their vision for a better future, are able to attract the loyalty, respect, and service of others. Leaders in all walks of life are in constant demand. I recently heard someone described as a “born leader.” But I must disagree.

  • We, the Undersigned, Are a Diverse Coalition of Religious Organizations
May 8, 2020 Dear Members of Congress: We, the undersigned, are a diverse coalition of religious organizations, houses of worship, religious leaders, and a law firm dedicated to defending and restoring religious liberty in America. We are each concerned about a new threat to our nation’s faith communities: a swarm of lawsuits blaming houses of worship and religious ministries for any person who attended a religious gathering or received food or shelter from a charity or ministry and subsequently contracted COVID-19. Although these lawsuits should eventually prove meritless, the cost of defending against them would have devastating consequences. Many of the same religious organizations who rushed to provide aid and comfort to those affected by COVID-19 now find themselves struggling financially. And a wave of lawsuits would force many to cease their operations, whether due to the cost of litigation, or the mere specter of it. We have, and continue, to support prudent efforts to balance public health with the desire to “reopen America.” But in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a proliferation of complex and often contradictory orders and guidelines at the state, county, and local levels, each purporting to govern when and how to reopen. Unfortunately, no religious organization—or any organization—can follow every guideline or order that has been issued around the country. We are concerned that some people—and their lawyers—will cherry pick certain guidelines from around the nation in order to assign liability to religious organizations. They might claim that a religious organization or a house of worship was negligent because it did not follow a single recommendation buried deep within a set of guidelines.

  • The Globalization of K-Pop: Is K-Pop Losing Its Korean-Ness?
Situations Vol. 5 (Winter 2011) © 2011 by Yonsei University Yun-Jung Choi Teacher at the Writing Center (Yonsei University, Seoul) The Globalization of K-Pop: Is K-Pop Losing its Korean-ness? The recent news of Korean boy and girl bands making headlines in Eastern and Southern Asia, Europe and the US are sending new hopes and energy through the K-Pop (short for Korean Pop) industry following the surge of pride when the Korean Wave first hit Japan and China in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The spread of Korean music and the increasing popularity of its singers is mainly due to the three major entertainment companies that dominate the K-Pop market: SM Entertainment (SM), YG Entertainment (YG) and JYP Entertainment (JYPE). SM is the oldest and largest entertainment company in the Korean music scene. It gave birth to the first generation of K-Pop boy and girl groups, including H.O.T, Shinhwa and S.E.S. It now produces the more recent teenage idols, TVXQ, Super Junior, SHINee and Girls’ Generation. YG is known for its hip-hop and electronic sounds that are well represented by its current acts Big Bang and 2NE1. JYPE also has a lineup of idol groups under its name: Wonder Girls, 2AM, 2PM and miss A. As K-Pop’s influence and popularity continues to spread, the three entertainment companies are keenly trying to keep up with the demand and expectations of K-Pop audiences around the world. The three K-Pop powerhouses are incorporating experienced foreign—more precisely, Western—talent for both music and choreography in order to make K-Pop more appealing abroad.
