Butler2 Introduction The red-banded hairstreak, Calycopis cecrops (Fabricius), is a very attractive butterfly and one of our most common hairstreaks throughout the southeastern United States in dry open woods and wooded neighborhoods. Distribution The red-banded hairstreak is found from Maryland to southeast Kansas to eastern Texas and throughout Florida. Hall, UF/IFAS Adults The wingspread of the adult is 24 to 30 mm (15/16–13/16 inches) (Opler and Malikul 1998). The under surface of the wings is gray-brown with a postmedial white line edged with a bright orange to red-orange band. Each hind wing has two tails (hairstreaks) with a relatively large conspicu- ous eyespot on the wing margin between the bases of the tails (Figure 1).     Species: Red-banded Hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops) Global Rank: G5 State Rank: S4 (State rank changed in 2002 from S2S3 to S4) Climate Change Vulnerability: Not Vulnerable/Increase Likely Confidence: Very High Habitat (adapted from Allen 1997; NatureServe 2008): The red-banded hairstreak is found in a variety of semi-open brushy habitats and forest edges. The species will utilize abandoned farms and old fields, hedgerows, right-of- ways, and occasionally yards with food plants. The caterpillars feed on a wide variety of detritus (rotting leaves) especially preferring detritus from sumacs (Rhus spp.) but also reported to feed on detritus from the Croton spp. and Myrica spp. Adults are seen mostly in the open and on edges in spring, but will move into the deep shade of forests during hot summer weather (observations by D. Schweitzer in New Jersey). Adults commonly visit gardens to nectar. Current Threats: Loss of habitat due to natural succession of habitats and conversion of old fields and other fallow habitats for other land uses such as active agriculture and development. Main factors Contributing to Vulnerability: This species was formerly limited in Pennsylvania by an intolerance of overwintering larvae to minimum winter temperatures. This species appears to be having greater overwintering success over the past decade, particularly in the south-east corner of the state. Throughout its range, the species is widespread and adapted to disturbed habitats. While it requires successional habitats, it is not closely tied to fire-maintained natural communities. Development of infrastructure for alternate energy sources (e.g., wind and natural gas) is expected to create additional successional habitat for red-banded hairstreaks and their favored and abundant host plant (sumacs).

The purpose of this paper is to establish a phylogenetic basis for a new Eumaeini subtribe that includes those lycaenid genera in which detritivory has been recorded. Morphological characters were coded for 82 species of the previously proposed “Lamprospilus Section” of the Eumaeini (19 of these had coding identical to another species), and a phylogenetic analysis was performed using the 63 distinct ingroup terminal taxa and six outgroups belonging to four genera. Taxonomic results include the description in the Eumaeini of Calycopidina Duarte & Robbins new subtribe (type genus Calycopis Scudder, 1876), which contains Lamprospilus Geyer, Badecla Duarte & Robbins new genus (type species Thecla badaca Hewitson), Arzecla Duarte & Robbins new genus (type species Thecla arza Hewitson), Arumecla Robbins & Duarte, Camissecla Robbins & Duarte, Electrostrymon Clench, Rubroserrata K. Johnson & Kroenlein revalidated status, Ziegleria K. Johnson, Kisutam K. Johnson & Kroenlein revalidated status, and Calycopis. Previous “infratribe” names Angulopina K. Johnson & Kroenlein, 1993, and Calycopina K. Johnson & Kroenlein, 1993, are nomenclaturally unavailable and polyphyletic as proposed. Striking structural characters diagnostic for the hairstreak genus Gi­ gantofalca are illustrated through a comparison of G. calilegua, n. sp., (northern Argen­ tine tropical forest), to a superficially similar, sympatric noncongener Calystryma phryne. Gigantofalca species, unique in morphological characters of both sexes, show little external sexual dimorphism and are most often mistaken for large females of Calystryma. Gi­ gantofalca currently contains three described species whose combined distribution sug­ gests members might occur throughout tropical forest regions of South America. Hairstreak butterflies show remarkable diversity and endemism in Andean tropical forest remnants south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Additional key words: Temperate South America, austral South America, neotropics, endemism, refugia. Of the twenty genera of Eumaeini treated by Johnson (1991) in the large "Calycopis / Calystryma grade," species of Gigantofalca (Johnson 1991:16) possess the most striking morphological structures, including unique sculpturing of the genital apparatus and terminal tergites into unusual (sometimes asymmetrical) configurations. However, aside from their relatively large size (forewing alar expanse up to 15 mm) and brown dorsal wing color in both sexes (some Calycopis/Calystryma grade show blue), little distinguishes Gigantofalca species externally from other sympatric and synchronic members of the grade, particu­ larly brown Calystryma. Specimens of Gigantofalca appear to have been overlooked because of initial misdetermination of gender, a problem also reported by Balint (1993) in Neotropical polyommatine lycaenids.

    236 JOURNAL OF THE LEPIDOPTERISTS' SOCIETY Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society 32(3), 1978,236 A NEW RECORD FOR CALYCOPIS CECROPS (LYCAENIDAE) IN COLORADO BY AIRCRAFT-INTRODUCTION A new butterfly record for Colorado, Calycopis cecrops (Fabricius), was collected by Howard Bone, in the rear cargo pit of a United Airlines 727 at Stapleton Inter­ national Airport, Denver, on 12 July 1977. The flight was a charter from the east coast arriving in Denver around 1030 MDST. The cargo pit doors of such aircraft are left in the open position the entire time the aircraft is on the ground, and this can easily be from 30 minutes to over an hour, which is ample time for any insect to fly into the pit. The mentioning by others (Eliot 1977, J. Lepid. Soc. 31: 75; Riotte 1977, J. Lepid. Soc. 31: 182) that Lepidoptera can be transported by both military and commercial airliners is confirmed by this record. Another possibility of an aircraft-introduced species is that of TmoZ.us azia ( Hewitson). This species has been collected in the state twice. The first specimen was collected by Jim Eff on 16 July 1957, Chatauqua Mesa, Boulder Co., Colorado. The second specimen was collected by Marc Epstein on 26 July 1975, Magnolia Rd., Boulder Co., Colorado. These records are both equidistant from the airport. The facts that I) there are no other records from the state, that 2) they were collected about the same time of year, and that 3) there were no other records during the 18 year interval, suggests the possibility these two specimens were introduced by aircraft.

C ALHOUN1 977 Wicks Dr., Palm Harbor, FL 34684 ABSTRACT. Between 1816 and 1818, artist-naturalist John Abbot completed 103 drawings of insects for English naturalist William Swain- son. The history of these illustrations is reviewed, leading up to their rediscovery in 1977 in the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand. Four of these drawings are figured. The adults in the 21 butterfly drawings are identified and the figures of larvae and pupae are as- sessed for accuracy. The illustrated plants are also identified and their status as hosts is examined. Aspects of Abbot’s life history notes are dis- cussed, including his spelling, grammar, and use of Latin names. His notes for Swainson are transcribed and analyzed. A review of Abbot’s art- work indicates that he duplicated many of his compositions for 20–25 years. He sometimes portrayed erroneous figures of larvae, pupae, and hostplants. Figures of immatures were sometimes fabricated using other species as models. He also applied duplicate figures of larvae to more than one species. Abbot may have sent another set of insect drawings to Swainson in 1830. Ninety-nine smaller drawings at the Turnbull Li- brary are attributed to both Abbot and Swainson. Six of these illustrations are figured. Abbot’s notes for Swainson suggest that at least three butterfly species are now more abundant than during the early nineteenth century, while three others are probably less widespread than for- merly.

    Sentinels on the Wing The Status and Conservation of Butterflies in Canada Peter W. Hall Foreword In Canada, our ties to the land are strong and deep. Whether we have viewed the coasts of British Columbia or Cape Breton, experienced the beauty of the Arctic tundra, paddled on rivers through our sweeping boreal forests, heard the wind in the prairies, watched caribou swim the rivers of northern Labrador, or searched for song birds in the hardwood forests of south eastern Canada, we all call Canada our home and native land. Perhaps because Canada’s landscapes are extensive and cover a broad range of diverse natural systems, it is easy for us to assume the health of our important natural spaces and the species they contain. Our country seems so vast compared to the number of Canadians that it is difficult for us to imagine humans could have any lasting effect on nature. Yet emerging science demonstrates that our natural systems and the species they contain are increas- ingly at risk. While the story is by no means complete, key indicator species demonstrate that Canada’s natural legacy is under pressure from a number of sources, such as the conversion of lands for human uses, the release of toxic chemicals, the introduction of new, invasive species or the further spread of natural pests, and a rapidly changing climate. These changes are hitting home and, with the globalization and expansion of human activities, it is clear the pace of change is accelerating. While their flights of fancy may seem insignificant, butterflies are sentinels or early indicators of this change, and can act as important messengers to raise awareness.
