May/June 2018 | THE CHRONICLE 3 A MESSAGE FROM THE TEMPLE PRESIDENT Why do I support Israel?

It’s a simple question: why do I support Israel? Even so, I know I will always support Israel. Sometimes the most basic question is the hardest I support Israel because its existence ensures to answer, and this question raises conflicting that my children and grandchildren will never fear emotions and thoughts. for their lives merely because they are Jewish. I don’t agree with everything Israel does in foreign Israel wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the systematic policy. At least two sets of Prime Minister Barak’s grandparents were denied their lives when they were murdered in pogroms and in death camps. I support Israel because its Prime Minister Barak fought for, and then led a nation, that categorically rejects the notion that existence ensures that my it’s okay to murder Jews. But he also fought to children grandchildren protect me and my family just in case sometime in will never fear for their lives merely the future we need to flee to the relative safety of a Jewish homeland. because they are Jewish. So, why do I support Israel? The answer is simple; Israel is the unambiguous statement that my family and I have a right to exist; A quick internet search confirmed that while there that my life and my children’s lives are as valuable is a lot written about why I shouldn’t support Israel, and important as anyone else’s; and never again there is very little about why I should support Israel. will Jewish life be casually taken without a fight.

BY PETER WOHLGEMUTH Rabbi Dan with Ilene and Peter Wohlgemuth

I recently went on a Mission to Israel with the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. It was my fifth trip to Israel and my third community mission; therefore, sightseeing was secondary to developing deeper relationships with others in our wonderful Jewish community. I asked my wife, Ilene, why Rabbi Dan would go on a Federation Mission when he takes Temple Beth El almost every year, and Ilene said that Rabbi Dan “gets” the concept of community and wanted to introduce our new temple president, Mark Sunshine, to the rest of the community. I have known Rabbi Dan for over 20 years and have always considered him not only my Rabbi but also a spontaneously creating friend.
