  • Steph Scott ©2014 Adapting Snow White Today
Steph Scott ©2014 Adapting Snow White Today: Narrative and Gender Analysis in the Television Show Once Upon a Time Abstract: This paper examines the narrative in the first season of the ABC television show Once Upon a Time (2011-Present) and the fairytale Snow White (1857) with a particular focus on female gender representation. The reappearance of fairytales in popular media provides a unique opportunity to examine how values between two very different time periods have changed. Utilizing a narrative approach allows the research to show the merits and limitations across adapting from an old text to a television serial. Once Upon a Time offers a progressive rendition of the character Snow White by challenging both the traditional narrative and the television serial narrative. Snow White’s relationships with other characters are also expanded upon in the televised tale and surround her heroic acts, rather than her beauty, which changes the values presented in the television series. Methodology: In Once Upon a Time, throughout its narrative progression the traditional narrative is challenged. The first season’s episodes “Snow Falls,” “Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” “7:15AM,” “Heart of Darkness,” “The Stable Boy,” “An Apple Red as Blood,” and “A Land Without Magic” are given particular attention in this analysis because they pertain to Snow White’s fairytale. Robert Stam (2005) describes adaptation narrative analysis as considering “the ways in which adaptations add, eliminate, or condense characters” (p.34). With textual analysis of the first season of Once Upon a Time, these factors can be analyzed through Snow White’s relationships with other characters.

  • At the Mercy of Tiberius a Novel
AT THE MERCY OF TIBERIUS A NOVEL By AUGUSTA JANE EVANS AT THE MERCY OF TIBERIUS CHAPTER I. "You are obstinate and ungrateful. You would rather see me suffer and die, than bend your stubborn pride in the effort to obtain relief for me. You will not try to save me." The thin, hysterically unsteady voice ended in a sob, and the frail wasted form of the speaker leaned forward, as if the issue of life or death hung upon an answer. The tower clock of a neighboring church began to strike the hour of noon, and not until the echo of the last stroke had died away, was there a reply to the appeal. "Mother, try to be just to me. My pride is for you, not for myself. I shrink from seeing my mother crawl to the feet of a man, who has disowned and spurned her; I cannot consent that she should humbly beg for rights, so unnaturally withheld. Every instinct of my nature revolts from the step you require of me, and I feel as if you held a hot iron in your hand, waiting to brand me." "Your proud sensitiveness runs in a strange groove, and it seems you would prefer to see me a pauper in a Hospital, rather than go to your grandfather and ask for help. Beryl, time presses, and if I die for want of aid, you will be responsible; when it is too late, you will reproach yourself. If I only knew where and how to reach my dear boy, I should not importune you.

Half a century ago, Dr. Alfred Tomatis was confronted with the most curious case of his fifty-year career as an otolar- yngologist. A renowned opera singer had mysteriously lost his ability to hit certain notes even though those notes were well within his vocal range. He had been to other specialists, all of whom thought it was a vocal problem. Dr. Tomatis thought otherwise. Using a sonometer, Dr. Tomatis determined that this opera singer was producing 140-decibel sound waves at a meter’s distance. That’s louder than a military jet taking off from an aircraft carrier! That discovery led to this diagnosis: the opera singer had been deafened by the sound of his own voice. And because he couldn’t hear the note, he could no longer sing the note. In Dr. Tomatis’s words, “The voice can only reproduce what the ear can hear.” The French Academy of Medicine dubbed it the Tomatis effect. And it’s ramifications go way beyond opera. Listen, here’s my theory. All of us have problems—relational problems, emotional problems, spiritual problems. We think those problems are the problem, but I think they’re symptoms. The root cause of our problems is a spiritual Tomatis effect—ears that have been deafened to the voice of God. It’s our own negative self-talk. God can’t get a word in edgewise! It’s the voice of criticism—you’ve heard that voice so often for so long that you can’t believe anything else about yourself.

The Presence of Performance and the Stakes of Serial Drama: Accrual, Transience, Companionship Elliott Logan MPhil (University of Queensland, 2013) BA, Hons (University of Queensland, 2009) BA (University of Queensland, 2007) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Communication and Arts Abstract This thesis shows how performance is a critically neglected but crucial aspect of serial television drama as an art form. One of serial drama’s obvious storytelling attractions is its ability to involve viewers in relationships between characters over long periods of time. Such involvement takes place through a recurring structure of episodes and seasons, whose unfolding reflects the extensive, ongoing history through which interpersonal bonds form and develop, deepen and decay. The characters we watch onscreen are embodied and performed by actors. Television studies, however, has persistently overlooked screen performance, hampering appreciation of serial drama’s affinity with long-term relationships as a resource for aesthetic significance. Redressing such neglect, this thesis directs new critical attention to expressive stylistic relationships between serial form, screen performance, and the subject of companionship in some recent US serial dramas. The focus of that attention is a particular aesthetic quality: the provisional, which emerges through serial drama’s distinctive tension between permanence and transience. In the first chapter, I argue that the provisional is central to an affinity between screen performance, seriality in television drama, and companionship as an aspect of human life. Chapters Two and Three then show how the art of the provisional in particular series has been underappreciated due to television studies’ neglect of performance and expressiveness as dimensions of serial form in television fiction.
