RE: REQUESTING FOR FUNDS TO PARTNER WITH UNICEF AND HELP STRENGTHEN THE ”IMARISHA AFYA YA MAMA NA MTOTO PROJECT”

Western HIV/AIDS Network-(WEHAK) truly appreciates the official invitation to join other partner organizations in the official LAUNCH of a Nutrition Component “IMARISHA AFYA YA MAMA NA MTOTO-PROJECT”

The Network is committed to the on going HIV/AIDS related activity within just to mention it is “VCT”-Voluntary Counseling and Testing Door to Door activity to let the people willing to be tested access their HIV status in time and make informed choices Consequently Western HIV/AIDS Network would like to be considered as a strong partner to UNICEF especially in the anticipated implementation of the five years “IMARISHA AFYA YA MAMA NA MTOTO PROJECT.IN KAKAMEGA COUNTY”

Sir, it is our hope that the launching of this important Health Project in Kakamega County is an opening to reflect to positive collaborative and networking system between implementers, the Government and intended beneficiaries who as we see will be mainly mothers and children

When mothers and children are healthy it automatically follows that men will appreciate since it is the duty of responsible fathers to provide for the welfare of their children, however the Health of an individual is non- compromisable and calls for immediate action even when the finance is scarce.

1

The rest of Senior agencies should join UNICEF to respond to this vital Health Project through ODSS – Organization Development and Systems Strengthening to allow effective implementation of the said Project-“IMARISHA AFYA YA MAMA NA MTOTO-PROJECT “

Sir we are pleased that UNICEF is basing her development partnership on Nutrition Component of the Project and maybe another senior agency as AMREF can join UNICEF to care for another important component in response to the same There is need to invite more development partners to come and invest in our Kakamega County responding to Health Projects

Sir it is important to mention that Western HIV/AIDS Network and her member organizations will actively respond in the new project mainly as one of the lead organizations in Kakamega County to help advocate for the project and help Build the Capacity of implementing groups through Training for effective respond The Network will also add value by strengthening the Project’s M&E-Monitoring and Evaluation-Team through Project Collaboration/Coordination. Western HIV/AIDS Network will train the implementing partners and CBOs for effective M&E Monitoring and Evaluation. The NGO-Network will join the rest of CSOs in Kakamega County for positive Project Impact.

(B.) ORGANIZATION-BACKGROUNG Western HIV/AIDS Network was first founded in 1995 before Kenyans declared HIV/AIDS as a National Disaster. A group of five HIV/AIDS Kenyan researchers under the chairmanship of Dr. Bwire Okumu – by then the Director of Medical Services Kenya- in company of Mrs. Gertrude Shikuku – who by then was the in charge of the famous Medical Training College under team leadership of Zachariah Amukhale Muyokani together made an overview of HIV/AIDS impact both to the infected and affected persons within our catchments area and found it quite alarming. During the time HIV/AIDS was being addressed by NASCOP – National AIDS & STDs Coordinating Program who issued a warning to immediately bury bodies of those people

2

who died of HIV/AIDS, the bodies were first wrapped in polythene papers and quickly buried for fear of infecting relatives who would have carelessly touched the body, this was a great misconception

(C.) WHAT IS WESTERN HIV/AIDS NETWORK? Western HIV/AIDS Network is mainly a Capacity Building NGO-Network to more than 500 member CBOs, FBOs, NGOs. Schools and Colleges, Youth and Women groups affiliated to the NGO-Network for effective implementation of SRHR,HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria & HEALTH- development programs/activities with the entire Kakamega County -as the Organization’s Catchments area.

Currently membership stands at more than 500

(D.) ORGANIZATION’SPROJECT OBJECTIVES (i) To capacity build more than 500 member NGOs, CBOs, Private sectors and Youth Groups to be able to design and implement within the coming one year quality Mother and Child reproductive interventions that will translate to an increase of 30% in the collaboration and dissemination of information of HEALTH and Life expectancy of mothers and their children. The activities will be implemented through Advocacy, Education and Continuous Networking. (ii) To develop a strategic plan for all the corporate members with the aim of harmonizing activities and programs and reducing cases of duplicating of activities. (iii) Capacity Building of the implementers with the view of equipping them with knowledge that would assist handling the ever-changing problems of the Mother and Child in Sexual Reproductive Health and Research in our organization’s catchments area-the entire County of Kakamega.

(i. ) VISION: To have a healthy and productive HIV/AIDS free Society.

(ii.) MISSION: To promote collaboration and networking among member Organizations by creating a supportive and responsive environment for sharing resources, understanding and collectively addressing the negative social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS Bad Governance Lack of Good Health and with participation in Development issues.

(iii )VALUES: Solidarity with people living with HIV (PLWHIV) participation and inclusion, Justice and Equity

3

(iv.) Organizational Type: NGO-Network (Non - Governmental Organization)

(.E.) INNOVATIVE CRITERIA Western HIV/AIDS Network’s unique approach includes the networking issue where member organizations are empowered through Education attained in trainings offered. The member organizations whose capacity has been built by the Network will through their organizations Replicate Good Practice and Participatory Governance. As they intensify the application of the new constitution which already gives equal power to the women and men in the government

Sectors and the parliament of Kenya.

4

(.F.) SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY The sustainability of the project will be achieved as the member Organizations grow in strength, number and as the community members become aware of the resources at the centre and bring their children to make use of the centre as they contribute a membership fee for its sustenance. Even so it is envisaged in the short time that given the gravity of the Governance, Peace and Health issues external funding will be necessary to compensate for the low resource in the level of Western Province - Kenya. When good leadership, Governance , Peace and Health are achieved, the country will experience transparency and accountability resulting into the equity and gender sensitive to get the correct beneficiary for leadership, resources and materials.
