Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity. -

ITO contribbtes to, and draws upon, the collective knowledge of the 14 sister institutes which make up the Natural Environment Research Council, spanning all the environmental sciences. The Institute studies the factors determining the structure, composition and processes of land and freshwater systems, and of individual plant and animal species. It is developing a sounder scientific basis for predicting and modelling environmental trends arising from natural or man-made change. The results of this research are available to those responsible for the protection, management and wise use of our natural resources. One quarter of ITE's work is research commissioned by customers, such as the Department of Environment, the European Economic Community, the Nature Conservancy Council and the Overseas Development Administration. The remainder is fundamental research supported by NERC. ITE's expertise is widely used by international organizations In overseas projects and programmes of research. -

(Brazil) December, 1974 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London and for the Diploma of Imperial College Imperial College of Science and Technology, Silwood Park, Ascot, Berkshire. 2 ABSTRACT Studies in the laboratory and under field conditions were made on the biology and population ecology of Macrosteles sexnotatus (Fall6n) (Cicadellidae, Hemiptera). Laboratory studies on the biology were carried out under a set of constant temperature conditions. The rela- tionship between temperature and rates of egg and nymphal development are presented and discussed. Effects of tempera- ture on fecundity and longevity were also studied, and choice of oviposition sites under laboratory and field conditions were investigated. Studies were carried out to induce hatching of diapausing eggs and also to induce diapause in the eggs. The internal reproductive organs of males and females are described and illustrated. Illustrated descrip- tions are also given of the five nymphal stages and sexes are distinguished from third instar onwards. Descriptions and illustrations are given of a short winged form which occurred in the laboratory cultures. Population studies_of M. sexnotatus in an catfield • were carried out from 1972 to 1974. Adults and nymphs were sampled regularly with a D-vac suction sampler and occa- sionally with a sweep net. Weekly population estimates were made from June to late September for 1973 and 1974 and for August and September of 1972. Population budgets are presented and causes of mortality are discussed. Losses caused by parasitism in the nymphal and adult stages are 3 shown to be smaller than those within the egg stage. -

The knowledge of dispersal evolution, motivation, its effect on metapopulation dynamics and species distribution at multiple scales is poorly understood and many questions remain unsolved or require empirical verification. In this thesis we contribute to the knowledge of dispersal, by studying both ecological and evolutionary aspects of spider dispersal in fragmented grey dunes. Studies were performed at the individual, population and assemblage level and indicate that behavioural traits narrowly linked to dispersal, con- siderably show [adaptive] variation in function of habitat quality and geometry. Dispersal also determines spider distribution patterns and metapopulation dynamics. Abstract The contribution summarizes previously unpublished data and adds records of newly collected cave-dwelling spiders from the Balkan Peninsula. New data on the distribution of 91 species from 16 families, found in 157 (27 newly established) underground sites (caves and artificial galleries) are reported due to 337 original records. Twelve species are new to the spider fauna of the caves of the Balkan Peninsula. The species Histopona palaeolithica (Brignoli, 1971) and Hoplopholcus longipes (Spassky, 1934) are reported for the first time for the territory of Balkan Peninsula, Centromerus cavernarum (L. Koch, 1872), Diplocephalus foraminifer (O.P.-Cambridge, 1875) and Lepthyphantes notabilis Kulczyński, 1887 are new for the fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cataleptoneta detriticola Deltshev & Li, 2013 is new for the fauna of Greece, Asthenargus bracianus Miller, 1938 and Centromerus europaeus (Simon, 1911) are new for the fauna of Montenegro and Syedra gracilis (Menge, 1869) is new for the fauna of Turkey. -

(2009),24(1-3): 2 In memoriam JEAN-PIERRE MAELFAIT Kortrijk 01/06/1951 Gent 06/02/2009 Jean-Pierre Maelfait is ons ontvallen op 6 februari van dit jaar. We brengen hulde aan een man die veel gegeven heeft voor de arachnologie in het algemeen en meer specifiek voor onze vereniging. Jean-Pierre is altijd een belangrijke pion geweest in het bestaan van ARABEL. Hij was medestichter van de “Werkgroep ARABEL” in 1976 en op zijn aanraden werd gestart met het publiceren van de “Nieuwsbrief” in 1986, het jaar waarin ook ARABEL een officiële vzw werd. Hij is eindredacteur van de “Nieuwsbrief” geweest van 1990 tot en met 2002. Sinds het ontstaan van onze vereniging is Jean-Pierre achtereenvolgens penningmeester geweest van 1986 tot en met 1989, ondervoorzitter van 1990 tot en met 1995 om uiteindelijk voorzitter te worden van 1996 tot en met 1999. Pas in 2003 gaf hij zijn fakkel als bestuurslid over aan de “jeugd”. Dit afscheid is des te erger omdat Jean- Pierre er na 6 jaar afwezigheid terug een lap ging op geven, door opnieuw bestuurslid te worden in 2009 en aldus verkozen werd als Secretaris. Alle artikels in dit nummer opgenomen worden naar hem opgedragen. Jean-Pierre Maelfait nous a quitté le 6 février de cette année. Nous rendons hommage à un homme qui a beaucoup donné dans sa vie pour l’arachnologie en général et plus particulièrement pour Arabel. Jean-Pierre a toujours été un pion important dans la vie de notre Société. -

CLARK AND JANET BECCALONI Department of Life Sciences, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD. In 2014 the Natural History Museum, London organised a field trip to Slapton. These field notes report on the trip, giving details of methodology, the species collected and those of notable status. INTRODUCTION OBjectives A field trip to Slapton was organised, funded and undertaken by the Natural History Museum, London (NHM) in July 2014. The main objective was to acquire tissues of UK invertebrates for the Molecular Collections Facility (MCF) at the NHM. The other objectives were to: 1. Acquire specimens of hitherto under-represented species in the NHM collection; 2. Provide UK invertebrate records for the Field Studies Council (FSC), local wildlife trusts, Natural England, the National Trust and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway; 3. Develop a partnership between these organisations and the NHM; 4. Publish records of new/under-recorded species for the area in Field Studies (the publication of the FSC). Background to the NHM collections The NHM is home to over 80 million specimens and objects. The Museum uses best practice in curating and preserving specimens for perpetuity. In 2012 the Molecular Collections Facilities (MCF) was opened at the NHM. The MCF houses a variety of material including botanical, entomological and zoological tissues in state-of-the-art freezers ranging in temperature from -20ºC and -80ºC to -150ºC (Figs. 1). As well as tissues, a genomic DNA collection is also being developed.
