Gaius souligne ainsi la place fondamentale de l’esclavage dans la Rome impériale. La barrière de la liberté était si structurante et le recours au travail servile pratiqué à une telle échelle, que la société romaine mérite assurément le qualificatif d’esclavagiste. Certes, la condition servile était inférieure, mais la concevoir en terme de barrière ou de strate horizontale, séparant les esclaves et les libres, se révèle insuffisant. Dans une population servile à la hiérarchie très marquée, la condition personnelle des esclaves dépendait beaucoup des relations verticales, qui unissaient chacun d’entre eux à leur maître. Tel est le sujet de ce livre collectif. L’examen prioritaire de la documentation épigraphique vise à en restituer la complexité. Il fait place à des serviteurs, à des domesticités et à des maîtres d’une grande diversité, dans différentes régions de l’Empire. Les grandes étapes de la vie des hommes et des femmes réduits en esclavage (l’enfance, la mort, en passant parfois par l’affranchissement) sont prises en compte. C’est aussi dans ses multiples dimensions, du droit aux affects, que la relation entre esclaves et maîtres se trouve mise en lumière. L’hôtel Berthelot, majestueux édifice du XVIe s., propriété de l’université, en fut le théâtre, les 18 et 19 septembre 2014, vingt-huit années après la rencontre fondatrice d’avril 1986, qui eut lieu à Rome. Les suivantes se déroulèrent aussi en Italie (à Rome, Macerata, Bari, Aquilée), jusqu’à la quinzième et à la mise en pratique d’une alternance entre la France et l’Italie. L’université de Poitiers succéda ainsi à l’École Pratique des Hautes Études et au Collège de France (qui abritèrent la quinzième rencontre, en 2008, sur le thème « Colons et colonies dans l’empire romain ») et à l’université Bordeaux-Montaigne (où se déroula la dix-huitième, en 2011, « Se déplacer dans l’empire romain »). Les épigraphistes de l’équipe HeRMA (« Hellénisation et romanisation dans le monde antique ») virent dans la proposition du comité franco- italien d’accueillir la vingtième rencontre une reconnaissance de leur activité internationale de recherche et de formation. Ils ont tenté d’être dignes de cet insigne honneur, en cultivant les valeurs de l’hospitalité scientifique. Mais cette tentative aurait été vouée à l’échec sans le soutien financier de l’Institut Universitaire de France et d’AnHiMA (« Anthropologie et histoire du monde antique - UMR 8210) ; et sans l’intérêt éditorial de l’École française de Rome pour la publication de ces actes. La place de l’épigraphie dans l’étude des relations entre esclaves et maîtres François Chausson 1 Cette XXe Rencontre franco-italienne porte sur l’expression épigraphique des liens entre esclaves et maîtres1 : si elles ne sont pas les plus fréquentes, un nombre cependant non négligeable d’inscriptions du monde romain émane d’esclaves faisant des dédicaces à des maîtres ou de maîtres ayant fait graver des inscriptions pour des esclaves. Il convient de situer ces inscriptions dans un contexte relationnel et social général, afin de mieux saisir ce que l’étude de cette relation peut, par le biais de l’épigraphie, apporter spécifiquement. Le propos n’a pas l’ambition de l’exhaustivité mais tend à procéder à quelques rappels sur le contexte dans lequel émergent ces témoignages épigraphiques. Une relation au sein de variations numériques 2 La relation entre un esclave et un maître doit varier en fonction du nombre d’esclaves et du statut et de la fortune du maître. Il y avait des petites maisonnées et d’autres bien plus grandes. Il y avait des petits maîtres et des maîtres plus importants. On se souvient de l’anecdote qui présente Hadrien s’indignant, aux bains, de voir qu’un vétéran n’avait pas les moyens d’acheter et d’entretenir un esclave susceptible de lui gratter le dos2. 3 La question du nombre d’esclaves par foyer (qui devait être très variable) reste débattue.

This approach to history is found in historians with clear connections to Stoicism, and in Stoic philosophers like Seneca. It is no coincidence that Tacitus is particularly interested in the behavior of Stoics like Thrasea Paetus, Barea Soranus, and Seneca himself. They, and even non-Stoic characters like Epicharis and Petronius, exemplify the behavior necessary if Roman freedom was to survive the monarchy. The portrait of the wealthy freedman, lounging in his deluxe octaphoros (litter carried by eight imported slaves), is one which appears repeatedly, taking shape in the late Republic and reaching a climax of frequency in the satires of Juvenal and the epigrams of Martial, in the late first century CE. While by this stage the conveyance undeniably functions as a satirical symbol, the origins and constructedness of its role as such have been surprisingly under-examined by modern scholars. In order to excavate the litter’s developing identity, I first unravel Roman accounts of the vehicle’s origins. The lectica was repeatedly framed by Roman authors such as Cicero as an exotic import from the near east (Bithynia, in particular), only available to Romans upon their exposure, through the process of imperial expansion, to eastern softness. However, such a projection involved carefully distinguishing this “decadent” litter from already existing, sanctioned litter use: thus the lectica also encompasses a category closer to our “stretcher.” Indeed, the litter’s status as a newfangled import is belied by coexisting narratives of republican-era patriarchs riding in the lectica, usually because of injury, old age, or disability.

Roman law stigmatized not only the individual but also the collective for dishonorable acts. Numerous professions incurred varying degrees of disrepute that carried legal and civic disabilities. Professionals in the sex and entertainment trades who incurred the legal stigma of infamia have been investigated by modern scholarship; yet, those people who worked in the disreputable occupations of praeco (crier), dissignator (event coordinator), libitinarius (funeral director), and in the mortuary trade have not been fully discussed in terms of either the reasons for their disrepute or their significance within social, economic, administrative, and religious networks. To counteract this void of literature, I analyze the status and role of these professionals from the Republic to Late Antiquity. Through this research, I show the origins of social perceptions of disrepute and their codification into legal statute in the first century BCE, and illustrate the creation of a marginal society that was placed outside the civic realm in Roman cities. I argue that these professionals were crucial negotiators between the civic and marginal society.

    DOMITIUS CORBULO AND THE SENATORIAL OPPOSITION TO THE REIGN OF NERO* I. INTRODUCTION Domitius Corbulo enjoyed trust and considerable favour with Gaius and Claudius. In AD 39, he became consul suffectus, no doubt as a conse- quence of his well-attested connections to the domus Augusta and prob- ably as a token of imperial gratitude for the financial profits Gaius made out of the prosecutions of the highway commissioners that Corbulo’s ran- corous (and homonymous) father had pursued ever since the rule of Tiberius. Although in 43, Claudius forced Corbulo Maior to repay a part of the fines to his victims, the star of Corbulo the Younger continued to rise. In 47, he achieved military repute as legatus Augusti pro praetore exercitus Germaniae inferioris, receiving the ornamenta triumphalia for his ruthless campaign against several Germanic tribes. Around AD 52, Corbulo got the prestigious proconsulate of Asia. That Nero also had complete confidence in Corbulo up to and including the eventful year of AD 65, is irrefutable1. The literary sources are Cassius Dio, Herodian, the Scriptores Historiae Augustae, and brief references in Aurelius Victor, Eutropius and Eusebius.^ These authorities will be treated in detail in a later chapter. The inscriptional evidence is quite extensive considering the shortness of Macrinus' reign, the fact that it was spent almost entirely in the Eastern provinces and that after his downfall his inscriptions were systematically erased. In Rome itself has been found the partially erased record in the Fasti sodalium Augustalium Claudialium recording the admission of Macrinus to that body (C.I.L. VI, 1984 (2), lines 13-17). The Fasti sacerdotum in aede Jovis Propugnatoris consistentium, while the stone has been broken and the letters erased, show by the context that they also contained the record of the election of Macrinus (C.I.L. ABSTRACT The Invisibility of Juvenal James Uden This dissertation offers a reading of Juvenal’s Satires. It maintains that Juvenal consciously frustrates readers’ attempts to identify his poetic voice with a single unitary character or persona. At the same time, it argues that Juvenal’s poems are influenced in both form and theme by cultural trends in the early second century.
