INTRODUCTION The 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk Parts Catalog MODEL 56J An effort of approximately four years went into the production of this catalog and, to the best of my knowledge, it is the first ever parts catalog designed for one specific model of car produced by the Studebaker Packard Corporation. The seed for this project was planted while searching through the Studebaker Body and Chassis parts catalogs for various parts for my own 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk. Often there was much confusion as to which of the parts listed was the correct one for my car. On more than one occasion, I thought that it would certainly be nice to have a catalog of parts which was designed specifically for my car. In January, 1989, I started the 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk Owners Register. The idea was to track the remaining 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawks (model 56J) and to produce a newsletter, 56J ONLY, for the members as a vehicle for sharing information. The success of that endeavor led me to embark on this catalog project about a year later. I would have to say that many times during the past four years I recalled the saying which went something like "the longest journey begins with the first step". In this case, that first step began with the section on brakes (Group 11 in the Chassis Parts Catalog). I plodded through this section and when I finished, I thought, if I can do one group, I can do them all. Since I had no deadline, I simply did what I could, when I could and eventually (4 years later), I had done them all. Using a personal computer and word processor, I typed in virtually every character, which unfortunately left much room for error. Although the data entry was a formidable exercise, proofing the material was equally as difficult and time consuming. I found numerous mistakes and, as with the original catalogs, some mistakes probably remain. With about 52,000 words and spaces entered, even a 99.9% accuracy rate would leave 52 errors. The black and white cover, showing a 3/4 front view of a 1956 Golden Hawk, features a computerized representation of original Studebaker artwork. Using a scanner, I transferred the artwork to a computer disk and then (in technical terms), I plopped it on the page. Special thanks go to my wife Anita who helped me cross check part numbers and illustrations, proof read the material for spelling and text errors, and never once told me I was crazy. This updated version from 2021 is basically the same as the 1994 version, with a better font. I also did some streamlining and eliminated some blank pages. Other than a few notes of clarification which are in italics, this is the last contact you will have with me while you use this catalog. From this point on, it is strictly 56J ONLY. Frank J. INTRODUCTION NOTICE This 1956 STUDEBAKER GOLDEN HAWK PARTS CATALOG was compiled from information contained in the 1955 - 1958 STUDEBAKER CHASSIS PARTS CATALOG (Revised Jan., 1961), the 1953 - 1958 BODY PARTS CATALOG (April 1958), and a few items from the STUDEBAKER 1956 Passenger Car SHOP MANUAL. Only those items pertaining to the 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk were extracted from the above catalogs and entered herein. Although this catalog is intended to show all part # identification for the 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk, there will be instances when reference to the other catalogs will be necessary. This catalog does not indicate what other models use like parts. The user of this catalog assumes all responsibility for insuring that all part numbers are correct. There was much ambiguity in the original catalogs and every effort was made to insure that the correct part numbers, notes, and plates were used in developing this catalog. Discrepancies are noted in italics. ARRANGEMENT The same major groups, such as "Engine, Clutch, Transmission," etc. and sub-groups such as "Engine mounting", "Cylinder block, Head and Gaskets," etc. as used in the above catalogs, were used in this catalog. DEFINITION OF LOCATIONAL TERMS All parts having the same function, but which are not interchangeable, are designated by right, left, upper, lower, front or rear in regard to the location when viewed from the rear facing forward: in other words as the part is viewed when one is seated facing forward in the vehicle. Parts used only on right hand drive or left hand drive cars are indicated by 'RHC," or "LHC," all other parts not so marked are used on both right or left hand drive vehicles. COMPONENTS OF KITS, SETS AND ASSEMBLIES Components of Kits, Sets and Assemblies are listed in detail and when such components are also available separately, a note is added indicating the set or kit of which the particular item is a component. ATTACHING PARTS Attaching parts such as bolts, nuts, rivets, screws and washers, etc., are indented immediately following the part or parts with which they are used. Whenever two similar parts having the same attaching parts, such as right and left brackets are listed, they are placed immediately following one another and the attaching parts for both are covered by a single listing immediately thereafter. The quantities shown are the attaching parts necessary for both. ILLUSTRATIONS Illustrations in this parts catalog are shown at the beginning of each major group or in the text immediately following the group or sub-group heading. Assembly views, exploded views and cross sectional drawings are used to aid in location and identification of parts. These illustrations show the typical construction of the various assemblies and component parts and may not, in all cases, show the exact detail of each of the parts of the same general character. Each illustration is given a specific illustration number in order to facilitate its quick location on the plate or text page and enables a quick determination of part number. Each illustration is a combination of group number, sub-group number and specific item number. The plate number is also a combination number indicating the group number and specific plate. Page No. I I I Printed in U.S.A. INTRODUCTION For example, Illustration No. 0102-1 on plate 01-4 indicates that the part is listed in Group 01. Sub-group 0102 and is the CYLINDER BLOCK indicated by Illust. No. 0102-1. INDEXES The INDEX OF MAJOR GROUPS, SUB-GROUPS and ILLUSTRATIONS is at the front of the book. The ALPHABETICAL INDEX of all parts with the exception of indented items is at the front of the book. The NUMERICAL INDEX of all parts is located at the back of the book. LISTS A parts INFORMATION and TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS list, taken from the Shop Manual is located at the front of the book. A list of Studebaker SERVICE BULLETINS is located at the back of the book. A list of Utility Items showing all the little nuts and bolts whose part numbers begin with "g" is located at the back of the book. A list of ACCESSORY CODES showing many items which were not in the original catalogs is located at the back of the book. HOW TO IDENTIFY PARTS LISTED IN THIS CATALOG There are several ways to identify any parts quickly, using the various indexes. The following instructions and examples are given as a guide. 1. If only the description of the parts is known: A. Turn to the alphabetical index and locate item by the noun name. B. Turn to the group and sub-group shown opposite the noun name and determine the part number for the particular model. 2. If only the function of the part in the vehicle is known: A. Turn to the index of major qroups and sub-groups and determine the number of the group in which the part is most likely to be listed. (Example - A dome lamp would be in hard top bodies - 23 sub-group 2351.) B. Review the illustrations which apply to the major qroup or allied groups.
