At a meeting of the FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES on December 14, 2004, the following tribute to the life and service of the late Nathan Marsh Pusey was spread upon the permanent records of the Faculty. NATHAN MARSH PUSEY A.B., 1928; Ph.D. 1937, LL.D., 1972 TWENTY-FOURTH PRESIDENT OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion. It is easy in solitude to live after your own; But the great man is he who, in the midst of the crowd, Keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. Ralph Waldo Emerson On the afternoon of October 13, 1953, Nathan Marsh Pusey was installed in this room as the twenty-fourth president of Harvard College, inducted into office by Judge Charles Wyzanski, Jr. ’27, president of the Board of Overseers. The new president pledged “To try to keep assembled here the best scholars and teachers that can be found, to work to ensure conditions conducive to their best efforts, and con-stantly to strive for more effective ways to make their activity touch, quicken, and strengthen the intellectual aspirations of succeeding generations of young people.” He concluded with these words: “Harvard is a great intellectual enterprise founded and nourished in great faith. It shall be my purpose, continuing in that faith, to guide it as best I can, so help me God.” Nathan Marsh Pusey was born on April 4, 1907, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He entered the College in the Class of 1928; in his senior year he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; and he graduated with a degree in English, magna cum laude. -

Senior Counsel’s Office In its fifth year, fiscal year 2004, the Senior Counsel’s Office is MIT’s central in‐house counsel’s office, providing comprehensive legal services and counseling on MIT matters in all areas of concern to the academy and the administration (except intellectual property law). The office represents MIT’s president, provost, executive vice president, and chancellor, as well as the deans, vice presidents, the departments, laboratories, and research centers, and administrative offices. We also arrange for and manage outside legal services when needed and oversee all litigation. Our office includes MIT’s senior counsel Jamie Lewis Keith, contracts counsel Margaret Brill, and litigation and risk management counsel Mark DiVincenzo, as well as a law clerk, Kathryn Johnson. (In FY2004 our office also included a part‐time environmental counsel. In FY2005 the office will include an associate counsel.) We are problem solvers and strategic‐thinking partners for our clients. We strive to be enablers, helping MIT’s senior officers, faculty, and staff to accomplish their mission‐critical objectives and to make informed decisions. Our office also brings the lessons learned from litigation, other disputes, and major transactions back to the MIT community through counseling and education. These lessons support management and faculty initiatives to minimize and avoid those reputational, financial, operational, and legal risks that can be appropriately managed, while still achieving MIT’s core mission. Keyes Metcalf and the Founding of The Harvard Library Bulletin Dennis Carrigan In Random Recollections of an Anachronism, the first volume of his autobiography, Keyes Metcalf has told how he came to head the Harvard Library. In 1913 he had joined the New York Public Library, and had expected to work there until retirement. One day early in 1936, however, he was summoned to the office of his superior, Harry Miller Lydenberg, and there introduced to James Bryant Conant, the President of Harvard, who was in New York to discuss with Mr. Lydenberg a candidate to be Librarian of Harvard College, a position that was expected to lead to that of Director of the University Library. -

Harvard owes its very name to the library that was left in 1638 by John Harvard to the newly created College. For 370 years, the College and the University that grew around it have had libraries at their heart. While the University sprouted new buildings, departments, and schools, the library grew into a collection of collections, adding new services and locations until its tendrils stretched as far from Cambridge as Washington, DC and Florence, Italy. -
