*LRB09410597CSA40914r* SR0057 LRB094 10597 CSA 40914 r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Marine Lance Corporal Hector Ramos of Aurora died 3 in a helicopter crash during a desert sandstorm near the town 4 of Ar Rutbah, Iraq, on January 26, 2005; he was assigned to 1st 5 Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine 6 Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii; and 7 WHEREAS, Hector was born December 9, 1984 in Aurora; 8 although the notion had been in his head for years, he first 9 decided to join the Marines on September 11, 2001 after the 10 terrorist attacks; he joined the summer after he graduated in 11 2003 from East Aurora High School; and 12 WHEREAS, In high school he was always a leader; he was a 13 talented artist, president of the DECA marketing club, starred 14 in a number of school plays and always wanted to help other 15 students; he was a proud Marine and returned to his school to 16 tell students of his experiences in the Marines; and 17 WHEREAS, He will be remembered as a smiling, friendly, 18 outgoing, creative, talented, involved, fun-loving, and proud 19 young man; and 20 WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his grandfather, 21 Manuel Becker, and his uncle, Hector Becker; and 22 WHEREAS, He is survived by his mother, Nancy Ramos; his 23 father, Aurelio Ramos; his brothers, Noah and Isiah Ramos; his 24 uncles, Joel (Nina) Becker and Manuel (Gloria) Becker; his 25 aunt, Tawney Becker; his grandmother, Irene Becker; and his 26 fiancee, Jessica Jimenez; therefore, be it 27 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL 28 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that together with his 29 family, friends, fellow members of the United States armed -2-SR0057LRB094 10597 CSA 40914 r 1 forces, and the citizens of this State and this great nation, 2 we mourn the passing of Marine Lance Corporal Hector Ramos and 3 we extend to his family our sincerest condolences; and be it 4 further 5 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 6 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest 7 sympathy..

Acklin II, 25, of Louisville, Kentucky He was killed on 15 NOV 03 when two 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters crashed in Mosul, Iraq. Acklin was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. 4. Corporal Gary B. Coleman, 24, of Pikeville, Kentucky He was killed on 21 NOV 03 in Balad, Iraq. Coleman was on patrol when the vehicle he was driving flipped over into a canal trapping him inside the vehicle. Coleman was assigned to the Army's B Company, 1st Battalion, 68th Armored Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division (Mech), based in Fort Carson, Colorado. 5. Sergeant First Class James T. Hoffman, 41, of Whitesburg, Kentucky He was killed on 27 JAN 04 in an improvised explosive device attack in Khalidiyah, just east of Ar Ramadi, Iraq.

The objective was a sweep of the North Vietnam- ese Army (NVA)-dominated A Shau Valley by the 9th Marine Regiment reinforced by elements of the 3rd Marine Regiment to interdict the flow of supplies from the Ho Chi Minh Trail into the area. As the 9th Marines moved towards the A Shau valley, they established numerous firebases along the way which would provide them their ar- tillery support once they entered the valley and guard their MSR (Main Supply Route.) All of these bases needed to be resupplied by helicop- ter because of their distance from the main com- bat bases and because resupply via ground was very difficult during monsoon season. The Marines encountered stiff resistance through- out the conduct of the operation, most of which was fought under triple canopy jungle and within range of NVA artillery based in Laos. Marine cas- ualties were 130 KIAs & 932 WIAs. The Marines killed 1,617 NVA troops and captured over 500 tons of arms and munitions while denying the val- ley as an NVA staging area for the duration of the operation.

3rd Battalion, 3rdMarines Aug 2010 Washington DC Memories America’s Battalion History - Honor - Tradition - Brotherhood Young Corpsmen … vintage Marines 3/3 at 29 Palms, March 2010 Why we gather together: There is a Bible scripture that states “There is no greater love than one who gives his life for another.” Many gave their lives that we could be here this evening. While we were spared by fate from giving our lives, we were prepared to do so for our fellow Marines and Docs. That’s the essence of Marine love and that’s why we did what we did. We cared for one another then as we do today. There’s nothing more to say. It would be unnecessary or redundant to say that we would trust our lives to one another—simply be- cause we have already have and in more ways that we could ever imagine or recount. We’re alive today be- cause of the quiet and unassuming courage and compassion of those in this room tonight as well as many or our comrades who are unable to be with us or who are with us only in spirit. That’s why we’ve come from great distances and, for some, at great expense. We’ll never be able to repay one another. There really isn’t enough money in the world to do that. But we will forever remember each other. That’s why we’re here. That’s why we’re so proud to have been a 3/3 Marine in Vietnam and so proud to be a part of this celebration of remembrance so many years later.

(1 folder) Abstract: Stubbe (b.1938), a Wauwatosa (Wisconsin) native, discusses his service as a Navy Chap- lain during the Vietnam War with the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade, 26th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Stubbe recalls enlisting in the Navy Reserves before his senior year of high school and attending a two-week boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Center (Illinois). After graduating high school, he was assigned to active duty on the USS Noa , where he served on the deck force for two years before attending Yeo- man “A” School at Bainbridge (Maryland) and becoming a Yeoman Third Class. In 1958, Stubbe left active duty to attend St. Olaf College (Minnesota) but continued to serve in the Reserves. Stubbe graduated in 1962 with a degree in Philosophy and then attended Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, graduating in 1965. While at the seminary, Stubbe describes attending Navy Chaplains School, which he calls “boot camp for ministers,” in Newport (Rhode Island). Following the seminary, Stubbe went to the University of Chicago Theological School to get a Ph.D. in Ethics and Society; however, he left after one year because the Navy needed chaplains in Vietnam.
