MUSICAL INTERLUDE: THE PLOT OF THE PLAY THROUGH POP CULTURE (Page 1 of 2) Overview: Write the story of Romeo and Juliet through song titles. Grade: 6-12 Goal: To use contextual clues to relate the Shakespeare text and current songs. State Standards: English Writing Applications §2; Theater Arts §1 Outcomes: Students will research the play for clues to the characters, fully describe the arc of the play through modern lyrics and mood of the music played, and engage critical thinking skills to determine their choices. Activity: 1. Students will research current music to find connections of meaning through lyrics and musical expression to the plot of the play 2. Students will create a list of song that accurately describes the arc of the plot of the play, paying attention to particular words and moods that connect the song and the original text. 3. Have students share their lists, playing a few selections in class as time permits. Reflection: • What difficulty did you have finding the right songs, if any? • Were certain points of the play harder than others for which to find a current expression? • Does your soundtrack point to a certain interpretation of the story as you see it? • Were there certain characters you chose to highlight? Why? See example on the next page. - 30 - MUSICAL INTERLUDE (Page 2 of 2) By Daniel Moattar, from Urban High School, Cathleen Sheehan’s English class, April 2009 ------------------------- Act I: 1. • Wilco Bio 2011
After a busy 2010, Wilco is already putting its mark on 2011. The Chicago rock band founded in the mid-’90s by singer, guitarist and songwriter Jeff Tweedy last year launched and headlined the inaugural Solid Sound Festival, while Tweedy produced and wrote two songs for the Grammy- winning release by soul legend Mavis Staples, You Are Not Alone, which won Best Americana Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in February. Staples joined Wilco, Avi Buffalo, Vetiver, the Baseball Project and more to perform at the first Solid Sound Festival, held Aug. 13-15, 2010, on the grounds of MASS MoCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), a converted textile mill in North Adams, tucked away in the scenic Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts. Wilco has already announced the second incarnation of Solid Sound June 24-26. Along with a pair of headline performances by Wilco, this year’s version features the Levon Helm Band, Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore, New Zealand rocker Liam Finn, alt-country duo The Handsome Family and folk couple Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion. Also performing are soul singer Syl Johnson, jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas and Chicago retro-soul band JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, plus indie-rockers Here We Go Magic, Sic Alps, Purling Hiss and a rare live set by Pillow Wand, a collaboration between Moore and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline. Comedian John Hodgman hosts this year’s Comedy Cabaret, featuring Daily Show correspondent Wyatt Cenac and comics Eugene Mirman and Morgan Murphy. Tickets are available via solidsoundfestival.com. Also, Wilco this winter founded dBpm Records, headquartered in Easthampton, MA, to release future Wilco albums.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

An Excellent Wilco OverviewBy CustomerThis book deserves more attention from Wilco fans. Tim Grierson provides an excellent overview of Wilco's career from A.M. to The Whole Love. Greg Kot's Wilco: Learning How To Die has more in-depth information on Jeff Tweedy's time in Uncle Tupelo and the struggles to complete and release Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot CD. However, Wilco: Sunken Treasure has the advantage of covering all of Wilco's career up to 2013 and features comments from a number of Wilco insiders (especially various studio engineers and producers) not included in Kot's book. And although Jeff Tweedy and other Wilco members were interviewed by Kot and not by Grierson, Wilco: Sunken Treasure appears to be better balanced. Grierson clearly admires Wilco's music but also provides space for various critics who have not been as enamored by all of Wilco's discography, particularly the tepid Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (the Album) releases. The author also provides a fair account of Jay Bennett's split with the band, his solo work, and untimely death without resorting to the sad caricature portrayed by Sam Jones' I Am Trying to Break Your Heart documentary and Kot's book.

Bush in 2004, political pundits were quick to credit Christian evangelicals with providing the margin of victory over Democratic challenger John Kerry. An article in The New York Times touted presidential adviser Karl Rove as a genius for focusing the attention of his boss upon such “moral” issues as same-sex marriage and abortion, thereby attracting four million evangelicals to the polls who had sat out the 2000 election.1 The emphasis of the Democratic Party upon such matters as jobs in the economically-depressed state of 9a Ohio apparently was trumped by the emotionally-charged issues of gay marriage and abortion, which evangelicals perceived as more threatening to their way of life than an economy in decline. This reading of the election resulted in a series of jeremiads from the political left bemoaning the influence of Christians upon Woody Guthrie and the Christian Left: American politics. In an opinion piece for The New York Times, Jesus and “Commonism” liberal economist Paul Krugman termed President Bush a radical who “wants to break down barriers between church and state.” Ron Briley In his influential book What’s The Matter with Kansas?, Thomas Frank speculated as to why working-class people in Kansas, a state with a progressive tradition, would allow themselves to be manipulated by evangelists and the Republican Party into voting against their own economic interests.

  • 3. Allen, Holy Ground
Woody Guthrie Annual, 1 (2015): Allen, “Holy Ground” Holy Ground: The Klezmatics Channel Woody Guthrie1 ! !Ray Allen ! When Lorin Sklamberg sang “Come When I Call You” at the Brooklyn College Guthrie Centennial Conference the audience sat spellbound. The lyrics, Woody Guthrie’s 1949 reflections on the ravages of war, were set to a haunting modal melody composed by Skalmberg. As the song ended and the audience erupted in applause, I experienced one of those miraculous musical moments when the dots connected. Here was one of New York’s foremost interpreters of Jewish/Yiddish music, singing a contemporary song with sixty-year-old lyrics written by America’s iconic Okie troubadour, who in turn had structured the piece after an African American spiritual (“Children Go Where I Send Thee”). Sklamberg, along with his band mates, the Klezmatics, had added a fresh twist to the age-old folk process of forging new sounds from old traditions — in this case the seemingly unlikely merger of Eastern European Jewish music with an Anglo-prairie folk song via a nineteenth century black spiritual. So how did a nice Jewish band from New York City get caught up in Goyim folk music? The story began in 1997 at a Tanglewood concert that featured the renowned classical violinist Itzhak Perlman performing with the Klezmatics and three other klezmer bands.2 Woody Guthrie’s daughter, Nora, made her way backstage after the show and was surprised to learn that the lyrics to one of the Klezmatics’ songs, “Fisherlid” (“Fisherman’s Song”), had been written by her grandmother, the Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt.3 “I almost fell through the floor,” she recalled.
