Like a firework display, Berlin was burning off all its energy in those five short years. A literary walk through Berlin during the Weimar period begins at the Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s new part that came into its prime during the Weimar period. Large new movie theaters were built across from the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church, the Capitol und Ufa-Palast, and many new cafés made the Kurfürstendamm into Berlin’s avant-garde boulevard. Max Reinhardt’s theater became a major attraction along with bars, nightclubs, wine restaurants, Russian tearooms and dance halls, providing a hangout for Weimar’s young writers. But Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm is mostly famous for its revered literary cafés, Kranzler, Schwanecke and the most renowned, the Romanische Café in the impressive looking Romanische Haus across from the Memorial church.

The Weimar Republic is generally remembered today for its vibrant and modernist culture developed in the 1920s in which the spirit of Weimar can be perceived as a spirit that danced on the edge of a volcano. The term Weimar culture is closely associated with the pulsating, decadent nightlife of Berlin where slogans “everything that pleases is allowed” appeared credible. Along with examples from Berlin’s unique theater life, students will also be introduced to many of Weimar’s notable cultural and artistic achievements through examination of such topics as German Expressionism in art and literature, and the merging of art and craft in the modernist school of the Bauhaus. The student will examine various forms of social tensions of Weimar society as portrayed in such film classics as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, and The Blue Angel. In addition to the study of film, the student will read selections of fiction from writers such as Franz Werfel and Friedrich Wolf whose works exemplify the deep conflicts of Weimar society.

  • New Objectivity: Modern German Art in the Weimar Republic, 1919–1933
    New Objectivity: Modern German Art in the Weimar Republic, 1919–1933 Neue Sachlichkeit, or New Objectivity, was an approach to art-making that emerged in Germany in the aftermath of World War I, simultaneous with the formation of the nation’s first democracy, the Weimar Republic. Less a style or a cohesive movement than a shared attitude, New Objectivity rejected the tendencies toward exoticism and impassioned subjectivity that had characterized Expressionism, the predominant prewar avant-garde. In contrast, artists who became associated with New Objectivity—a term popularized in 1925 by German art historian Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub—observed the modern environment with divergent styles that were sober, unsentimental, and graphic. This exhibition examines the varied ways these artists depicted and mediated contemporary reality; by presenting photography alongside painting and drawing, it offers the rare opportunity to examine and compare New Objectivity across its different media. While they were not unified by manifesto, political tendency, or geography, these artists did share a skepticism regarding German society in the years following World War I and an awareness of the human isolation brought about by social change. They chose themes from contemporary life, using realism to negotiate rapidly changing social and political conditions. By closely scrutinizing everyday objects, modern machinery, and new technologies, these artists rendered them unnatural—as uneasy as individuals alienated from each other and their surroundings. As if to correct the chaos of wartime, they became productive voyeurs, dissecting their subjects with laser focus, even when overemphasis on detail came at the expense of the composition as a whole. Berlin led a sophisticated culture in fi lm, literature, painting, architecture and science. Yet, despite such pros, there emerged a reputation for decadence, for example prostitution and homosexual behaviour. German expressionism had a metaphorical symbolic relationship with the city and the built environment, as Germany began to regain its physical, social and economic structure after the First World War. Its fragmented urban, architectural and spatial character has been depicted as dream-like, chaotic and negatively disordered. On a parallel ideological level, the rapidly changing phenomenon of cities had great infl uence on artists, poets, writers and fi lmmakers who found metropolitan street life to be the stage of the magic and chaotic energy then known as city fi lms. This paper highlights the vivid forms of the expressionist city – Berlin’s roaring twenties – arising from the alchemy between dark representations and the urban experience. Through a tripartite coalition between Heinrich De Fries’s mimesis theory, Michel De Certeau’s fl âneur and Karl Grune’s 1923 expressionist city fi lm Die Straße (The Street), the paper explores the cinematic representation of a once-divided metropolitan city. These states shared a common history, culture and language but had never been united as a single nation. Prussia was the largest and strongest of the German states and in 1870-1871, it defeated France in a short war. Victory over France marked Prussia as a major European power and the German states united behind Prussia to form the German Empire.
