Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in the Simpsons
THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL Craptacular Science and the Worst Audience Ever: Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in The Simpsons being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD Film Studies in the University of Hull by Jemma Diane Gilboy, BFA, BA (Hons) (University of Regina), MScRes (University of Edinburgh) April 2016 Craptacular Science and the Worst Audience Ever: Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in The Simpsons by Jemma D. Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience. -

SLIM TRUTH: A TEXTUAL AND AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF CELEBRITY EATING DISORDER COVERAGE IN PEOPLE MAGAZINE by Angela Michel A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2015 ! ABSTRACT SLIM TRUTH: A TEXTUAL AND AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF CELEBRITY EATING DISORDER COVERAGE IN PEOPLE MAGAZINE Angela Michel Marquette University, 2015 This thesis employs textual analysis and autoethnography to examine portrayals of celebrity eating disorders in People magazine. In it I seek to accomplish two goals: first, to reveal the story told by the entertainment news outlet about anorexia and bulimia, and second, to relate that story to the lived experience of illness and recovery. I discover that the magazine’s narrative is reductive and simplistic, laced with half-truths and widely held myths about eating disorders. It depicts these disorders not as complex psychological conditions, but rather as behavioral and physical “battles” triggered by celebrity activities. The illness experience is portrayed as a double life, an extreme diet, a means of life control, or an addiction, while the recovery experience is portrayed as a never-ending process. -

The Simpsons; Pay Tribute to Late Actress Marcia Wallace
Beat: Entertainment The Simpsons; pay tribute to late actress Marcia Wallace -, 05.11.2013, 02:56 Time USPA News - The popular animated television series `The Simpsons` on Sunday night paid tribute to American actress Marcia Wallace, who died at her home in California last month and was known as the voice of Bart Simpson`s grumpy 4th grade teacher. To pay tribute to Wallace, the U.S. TV channel Fox canceled a rerun of `American Dad!` and replaced it with a rerun of `The Simpsons.` The network and the show`s producers had initially planned to broadcast a 1992 episode for which Wallace won an Emmy Award, but "technical issues" forced them to choose an episode from 2011 in which her character is suspended from school. The rerun was followed by an all-new episode of "The Simpsons," which opens with a sad-looking Bart who looks up at his classroom blackboard, on which is written: "We`ll really miss you Mrs. K." The episode later closed with a photo of Wallace`s character sitting in her classroom, accompanied by the message: "In loving memory of Marcia Wallace." Wallace, 70, died at her home in Los Angeles on October 25 as a result of complications from pneumonia. She was in recent years best known as the voice of Edna Krabappel, the teacher of Bart Simpson`s 4th grade class at Springfield Elementary School and in later seasons the wife of character Ned Flanders. She appeared in a total of 178 episodes. "I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace," Al Jean, executive producer of `The Simpsons,` wrote in a statement last month. -
The Mary Tyler Moore Show" 10 8
INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “ Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page{s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in die adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in “sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right .in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -
Lettre D’Archimède L’Actualité De L’Eldo Vue Par Un Spectateur No 71 — 30 Juillet 2016

[TRACK 1: MARCIA WALLACE] Introduction: Marcia Wallace of All
[TRACK 1: MARCIA WALLACE] Introduction: Marcia Wallace Of all the challenges cancer brings up, two of the most important ones are: facing the demands put on you as a caregiver for a cancer survivor; and, sorting out your feelings about what's going on in your life. Some days, you may feel overwhelmed, hopeless, resentful, even angry - you can't possibly be the superhero everyone seems to expect you to be. But on other days, you're ready to fight for what you need, you see that you're making progress, you remember that there's always something to hope for and work toward. The key is to recognize all of these feelings, in addition to the one feeling you should not fear: the feeling that you are failing. You've got the toughest job in the entire world - anything positive you can do is a victory. Unlike the other programs in the Cancer Survival Toolbox, this program, entitled, "Caring for the Caregiver," is just for you. You deserve it… you need it. How do I know? I've been through it, too, having been on both sides - a cancer survivor as well as a caregiver. My name is Marcia Wallace. I've been a cancer survivor since 1985, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then, I needed to be a caregiver for my husband, Denny, who had pancreatic cancer. If my voice sounds familiar, it may be because, as an actress on TV, I played the parts of the receptionist on "The Bob Newhart Show" and the Neighbor Lady on "Full House." I'm also the voice of Mrs.
