DEAL20 MAKER OF THE YEAR AWARDS 15 Celebrating Excellence in Deal Making D E A L 20 M A K E R O F T H E Y E A R A W A R D S 15 Finance Monthly is extremely proud to officially announce the winners of the Deal Maker of the Year Awards 2015. Now in its fifth year, the Finance Monthly Deal Maker Awards have quickly established a reputation as an industry standard for recognising M&A expertise in corporate, private equity, investment banking and legal fields. Through statistical analysis of the Finance Monthly (FM) deal database and votes cast online via the Finance Monthly website, our panel of judges shortlisted this year’s finalists, taking into account deal size, complexity and uniqueness. 2015’s Finance Monthly Deal Maker of the Year Awards celebrate the most impressive transactions in M&A, capital raising, corporate bonds, infrastructure and project finance, equities and restructuring. This year’s accolades are awarded amidst sustained global economic growth and greater confidence in the markets. It is expected that 2015 will end with over $4 trillion worth of deals, making it the highest for deal values since 2007. Cross-border deals are a major feature of this M&A wave. According to the M&A Index from Deloitte, more than $1 trillion worth of cross-border deals have been announced so far this year, of which a third were in the vibrant deal corridor between North America and Europe. New corridors have started emerging between Asia and Europe, led by China and Japan. -
The Music Column That Wouldn't Die: New Album Reviews
The Music Column That Wouldn’t Die: New Album Reviews. I told myself I was over this, that I had retired from the world of music reviews. I had moved onto bigger and better things (mostly staring at the wall and wondering why nobody calls me anymore). Yet here I am, a mere few months after burning my bridges, giving up on new music and making a world of enemies, back in the game. Did I miss the constant abuse, the being paid in soiled pennies and the lack of recognition which writing this unremembered column entailed? Funnily enough, I did! It was listening to the post punk genius of the new Dry Cleaning record that did it. I thought to myself ‘someone has to take it upon themselves to tell the world just how good this album is’. After a moment of quiet reflection where I drank a glass of lukewarm Ribena to calm the nerves, I decided that that person may as well be me. By JOHN BITTLES So, here we are. Bittles’ Magazine, like some particularly bothersome zombie with a bad haircut and worse breath, has been reborn. And what a re-introduction we have! In this month’s reviews there is the art heavy punk funk strut of Squid, the melancholy dream pop of White Flowers, Thomas Fehlmann’s rich ambiance, the return of living legends The Coral, the skewed pop of Dntel, and Dry Cleaning of course. So, tell all your friends, phone the tabloids, and let us begin… New Long Leg by Dry Cleaning. -

The Alien Disko: an Interview with Markus Acher
Welcome To The Alien Disko: An Interview With Markus Acher Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world There comes a time in everyone’s life when you find yourself standing in a muddy field with a plastic glass of warm ‚beer‘, straining to hear the muffled soundsystem in the far off distance thinking to yourself, »I’d rather be home watching EastEnders«. By JOHN BITTLES With shoddy promoters, phoned-in performances, crazed space cadets wanting to lick your face, and the usual array of drunken louts, going to a musical gathering these days can be as much fun as watching the new Justice League movie. With an eclectic line-up, an inviting venue, and organisers who seem to love music rather than the contents of your bank account, Alien Disko II is the type of event capable of getting us all excited about festivals again. Founded by brothers Markus and Micha Acher of the band The Notwist, the festival runs on the 15th and 16th of December and will be held at Munich’s lush theatre space Kammerspiele. Full details can be found here. Last year’s inaugural event (which included performances from Ras G, Cala Del Forno, Tenniscoats, Joanna Gruesome, etc) proved to be a huge success, so it made sense to repeat the feat in 2017. Spread over three rooms, this year’s line-up is wonderfully diverse, with intergalactic hip hop sitting next to Congolese rhythms, glitchy electronica, and more. Acts including Shabazz Palaces, Amiina, Ms. John Soda, Konono N.1, Michaela Melián and The Notwist have all been confirmed, ensuring that, for anyone in or near Munich, the purchase of a ticket is a must. -

One Desire Too Many
one desire too many Abstract: I defend the widely-held view that morally worthy action need not be motivated by a desire to promote rightness as such. Some have recently come to reject this view, arguing that desires for rightness as such are necessary for avoiding a certain kind of luck thought incompatible with morally worthy action. I show that those who defend desires for rightness as such on the basis of this argument misunderstand the relationship between moral worth and the kind of luck that their argument employs. Consequently, the argument provides no reason to doubt the popular view that a desire for rightness as such is no part of virtue. I conclude by sketching a way forward that maintains the best insights of both proponents and opponents of motivation by rightness as such. 1 one desire too many Words: 8053 Preprint version --- please cite version forthcoming in Philosophy & Phenomenological Research 1. Introduction It is commonly alleged that desiring an act’s moral rightness as such is defective in an important way. Acting on such desires is allegedly inconsistent with moral worth, the positive moral state a morally right act enjoys when its rightness is creditable to its agent. These desires are inconsistent with moral worth because they are thought to alienate the agent from moral ends that merit non-instrumental concern such as justice, equality, and welfare.1 For example, when donating to Oxfam is right because it alleviates famine, one ought not to donate simply out of a desire to promote the donation’s rightness as such. -
The New Culture Industry Tracing Democratization, Cultural Pluralism, and a New ‘Stillness’ in Modern Music
Savoy 1 The New Culture Industry Tracing democratization, cultural pluralism, and a new ‘stillness’ in modern music Augie Savoy Professor Jennifer Friedlander 9/28/20 Savoy 2 PREFACE In this country, it’s very hard for creative thought to escape capitalism. —Juan Atkins I have the impression that many of the elements that are supposed to provide access to music actually impoverish our relationship with it. —Michel Foucault As a listener, my earliest memory of music is hearing Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall on a portable CD player when I went to pre-school in Norway. Because my family had recently moved there, I had no experience speaking Norwegian and, until I figured it out, my parents thought I could listen to music to pass the time. For better or worse, it did far more than that. It started my love affair with music. On the surface, Off the Wall was straight to the point, ener- getic, and loud. As I replayed it, I realized that I could stick my head into the production and hear all the small details. The drums were rigid and robotic. The bass was relaxed and fluid. Michael Jackson’s voice was elastic, traveling across an entire emotional spectrum from tender to harsh. The production felt like a spectrum of different faces and characters. It was the storytelling and humanness of the record that made it compelling. It turned an uneventful day in pre-school, sur- rounded by kids I couldn’t understand, into a cinematic piece of art. Like Michael Jackson’s legacy, however, my relationship to music has become more complicated as I’ve gotten older. -
