    Moma More Cruel and Unusual Comedy Social Commentary in The

    MoMA Presents: More Cruel and Unusual Comedy: Social Commentary in the American Slapstick Film Part 2 October 6-14, 2010 Silent-era slapstick highlighted social, cultural, and aesthetic themes that continue to be central concerns around the world today; issues of race, gender, propriety, and economics have traditionally been among the most vital sources for rude comedy. Drawing on the Museum’s holdings of silent comedy, acquired largely in the 1970s and 1980s by former curator Eileen Bowser, Cruel and Unusual Comedy presents an otherwise little-seen body of work to contemporary audiences from an engaging perspective. The series, which first appeared in May 2009, continues with films that take aim at issues of sexual identity, substance abuse, health care, homelessness and economic disparity, and Surrealism. On October 8 at 8PM, Ms Bowser will address the connection between silent comedy and the international film archive movement, when she introduces a program of shorts that take physical comedy to extremes of dream-like invention and destruction. Audiences today will find the vulgar zest and anarchic spirit of silent slapstick has much in common with contemporary entertainment such as Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, MTV's Jackass and the current Jackass 3-D feature. A majority of the films in the series are archival rarities, often the only known surviving version, and feature lesser- remembered performers on the order of Al St. John, Lloyd Hamilton, Fay Tincher, Hank Mann, Lupino Lane, and even one, Diana Serra Cary (a.k.a. Baby Peggy), who, at 91, is the oldest living silent film star still active.

    HOLLYWOOD Programming Thanks to Henri Langlois FORBIDDEN PARADISE American cinema seemed to achieve perfection at that time: perfection of the cut, perfection of the stitching, perfection of the fabric. There is not haute couture only in Paris, just as there is not 'haute production' only in Hollywood. The perfection of taste and technique, absolute mastery, discretion in daring. Ernst Lubitsch was, in our memory, the man whose oeuvre will someday symbolize this perfection, this flawless style that was the distinctive feature of this art1. Henri Langlois In celebrating Henri Langlois, it is impossible to forget the prince of American comedy. It was François Truffaut who came up with the 'prince' expression, in February 1968, in an article in Cahiers du Cinéma that has since become famous, written just after the major (re)discovery retrospective organized by Henri Langlois at La Cinémathèque française. Truffaut insisted on the place that Lubitsch gave the public: 'No Lubitsch without a public but mind, the public is not in addition, it is with. It is part of the film.' It was in Max Reinhardt's German stage production of Sumurun that Pola Negri met Ernst Lubitsch, who was working as a director of short films at UFA. Lubitsch managed to convince UFA to make a film adaptation in costumes, starring Pola Negri. Sumurun (1920) was a huge success, so much so that their collaboration would continue on different films, culminating in the production of Madame Du Barry (1919), a worldwide success that brought Lubitsch and Negri international fame. He left for Hollywood in 1922 and made some ambitious films as well as, and above all, daring, sophisticated comedies such as The Marriage Circle, Three Women, Lady’s Windermere’s Fan and the least seen, Forbidden Paradise.

With additional contributions from the Filmarchiv Austria, the exhibition focuses on Austrian and German Jewish émigrés—including Max Ophuls, Erich von Stroheim, and Billy Wilder—as they look back on the city they left behind, as well as an international array of contemporary filmmakers and artists, such as Jem Cohen, VALIE EXPORT, Michael Haneke, Kurt Kren, Stanley Kubrick, Richard Linklater, Nicholas Roeg, and Ulrich Seidl, whose visions of Vienna reveal the powerful hold the city continues to exert over our collective unconscious. Vienna Unveiled: A City in Cinema is organized by Alexander Horwath, Director, Austrian Film Museum, Vienna, and Joshua Siegel, Associate Curator, Department of Film, MoMA, with special thanks to the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. The exhibition is also held in conjunction with Vienna: City of Dreams, a citywide festival organized by Carnegie Hall. Spanning the late 19th to the early 21st centuries, from historical and romanticized images of the Austro-Hungarian empire to noir-tinged Cold War narratives, and from a breeding ground of anti- Semitism and European Fascism to a present-day center of artistic experimentation and socioeconomic stability, the exhibition features some 70 films.
