XIV - XV) Introduction The San Vincenzo project began in 1980, over the last twenty years this has involved excavations of the monastery itself, survey of its terra and the excava- tion of several sites in the terra1 (Fig. 1) The aims of the study of the ceramics from the monastery and its terra are to: – establish a datable type series for the early medieval period in this area which would also be an important aid to dating early medieval contexts from other sites in central southern Italy; – to shed light on the social and economic life of the monastery; – to investigate the relationship between the monastery and settlements in its terra through time; – to investigate some key questions regarding developments in central and southern Italy during the early medieval and medieval periods. Although a part of what is discussed in this paper has already been presen- ted in other publications, as the excavations progress new information continues to come to light2. Of particular importance are the well stratified groups of the late eighth and early ninth centuries from the monastery itself and twelfth cen- tury deposits from the area of the New Abbey, a preliminary synthesis of this material is presented here for the first time. * This paper is a synthesis of a more detailed article to be publisched in Archeologia Medievale. 1. A cultivator must patiently protect, water, and till the soil around the plant for fifteen years before it begins to bear fruit. Though this dissertation is not nearly as useful or palatable as the olive’s pressed fruits, its slow growth to completion resembles the tree in as much as it was the patient and diligent kindness of my friends, mentors, and family that enabled me to finish the project. Mercifully it took fewer than fifteen years. My deepest thanks go to Paolo Squatriti, who provoked and inspired me to write an unconventional dissertation. I am unable to articulate the ways he has influenced my scholarship, teaching, and life. Ray Van Dam’s clarity of thought helped to shape and rein in my run-away ideas. New Dorp High School Social Studies Department AP Global Mr. Hubbs & Mrs. Zoleo The Unification of Italy While nationalism destroyed empires, it also built nations. Italy was one of the countries to form from the territories of the crumbling empires. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Austria ruled the Italian provinces of Venetia and Lombardy in the north, and several small states. In the south, the Spanish Bourbon family ruled the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Nevertheless, between 1815 and 1848, increasing numbers of Italians were no longer content to live under foreign rulers. Amid growing discontent, two leaders appeared—one was idealistic, the other practical. They had different personalities and pursued different goals. But each contributed to the Unification of Italy. The Movement for Unity Begins In 1832, an idealistic 26-year-old Italian named Guiseppe Mazzini organized a nationalist group called, Young Italy. Similarly, youth were the leaders and custodians of the nineteenth century nationalist movements. The Napoleonic Wars were lead principally by younger men. Napoleon was 35 years of age when crowned Emperor. As nationalism spread across Europe the pattern continued. People over 40 were excluded from Mazzini's organization. During the violent year of 1848, revolts broke out in eight states on the Italian Peninsula. Mazzini briefly headed a republican government in Rome. He believed that nation-states were the best hope for social justice, democracy, and peace in Europe. However, the 1848 rebellions failed in Italy as they did elsewhere in Europe. The foreign rulers of the Italian states drove Mazzini and other nationalist leaders into exile. -

It covers 4,438 km² with a population of about 320,000 inhabitants. Molise stretches from the Apennine mountains to the Adriatic coast. The region is divided into two provinces, Campobasso and Isernia, and it has one of the highest quality of life in the south of Italy. The industrial sector is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises. Food processing industries represent the core business of the region; the main traditional regional products are pasta, tartufo, typical dairy products such as caciocavallo and mozzarella, sausages, fish typical dishes (“brodetto”), extra virgin olive oil, wine. Molise is also well known as one of the most dynamic Italian regions in the wind energy production. The Region is involved in a development program to promote tourism as a driving force for the growth of the local economy. A network of itineraries and routes, among which the ancient ways of transhumance, the “tratturi”, allow to experience a slow way of doing tourism. Archaeological sites, uncontaminated nature, protected natural areas, benedictine and pilgrimage places, old traditions and gastronomy make it a territory with an important tourist vocation. On the coast we have medium and big hotels and touristic structures while in the rest of the territory, the accommodation offer for the tourist is represented mostly by B&B and also really important are the agritourism structures. The opening up of hyper-rural Molise After the armies had passed through Molise, on the morrow of the end of World War II, Molisans’ main preoccupation was not leaving their land and looking for better job and life prospects abroad. There were more immediate concerns, such as the return of prisoners, the high cost of living, rebuilding bombed towns, restoring roads and railways, restoring the water and electricity supply, and finding raw materials for artisanal activities. The recovery of the area was thus seen in a rather narrow perspective, as the healing of the wounds inflicted by the war to local society and the productive infrastructure, or, at most, as a reinforcement and development of traditional activities. The only sector where this perspective broadened was that of interregional transportation. The hope was to overcome the isolation of the region, although as a long-term project. When one peruses the local pages of the more or less politically engaged newspapers and journals that appeared with the return of democracy, and when one looks at institutional activities, especially those of the Consiglio provinciale di Campobasso, one is even surprised by the paucity and belatedness of references to the theme of emigration, deeply rooted as it is in the social conditions and culture of the Molisans.1 For example, one has to wait until 1949 for a report from Agnone, one of the historical epicenters of Molisan migration, to appear in the newspaper Il Messaggero.2 The report 1 For an overview of the phenomenon of migration in the history of the region, see Ricciarda Simoncelli, Il Molise. -

(incorporated in the Republic of Italy as a joint stock company) €3,500,000,000 Euro Medium Term Note Programme Under this €3,500,000,000 Euro Medium Term Note Programme (the “Programme”), 2i Rete Gas S.p.A. (the “Issuer” or “2iRG”) may from time to time issue notes (the “Notes”) denominated in any currency agreed between the Issuer and the relevant Dealer (as defined below). The maximum aggregate nominal amount of all Notes from time to time outstanding under the Programme will not exceed €3,500,000,000 (or its equivalent in other currencies calculated as described in the Dealer Agreement described herein), subject to increase as described herein. The Notes may be issued on a continuing basis to one or more of the Dealers specified under “Overview of the Programme” and any additional Dealer appointed under the Programme from time to time by the Issuer (each a “Dealer” and together the “Dealers”), which appointment may be for a specific issue or on an ongoing basis. References in this Base Prospectus to the “relevant Dealer” shall, in the case of an issue of Notes being (or intended to be) subscribed by more than one Dealer, be to all Dealers agreeing to subscribe such Notes.
