It studies the work of memory (its formation, inventing, and forgetting), depending on political conditions in the country and in comparison with Europe. Emphasis is put on absence of female educated elites in the Bulgarian collective memory and in national reputation elites. The paper studies through historical and anthropological approach the presences/absences of women intellectuals in “realms of memory” (Pierre Nora). The research is done basing on discourse analysis of memorial plaques, monuments, names of streets, and squares. 1. Commemorative Plaques The register of the Sofia Municipality and a field work are sources of the research of memorial plaques in Sofia placed in honor of Bulgarian and foreign women with contribution to the Bulgarian history. A total of 40 of memorial plaques were detected and studied. Plaques were placed irregularly in time and an enhanced public interest in this kind of activity has been observed in the last 10 years. The procedure accepted in the Regulations of the Sofia Municipality requires the submission of a proposal by a Steering Committee, documentary agreement by the owner of the building, support by a Municipal Councilor and a majority during voting by Sofia Municipal Council.

CLAIR Zhivko Hristov New Bulgarian University, Sofia, Bulgaria Abstract Analyzing the vocabulary and the stylistic techniques in the works of the two authors, dedicated to Bulgaria, the article aims to contribute to a change of the two seemingly contrasting attitudes in their Bulgarian reception. The first is the implicit attitude to MacGahan as a "dangerous" author whose work is not even published with its true title - "The Turkish atrocities in Bulgaria". The focus of the analysis are the passages that deal with the Bulgarian material culture and education, as well as their axiological charge. The second is the negative value-based perception of the Bulgaro-phobic texts of St. Clair, an author obviously considered ineligible for translating into Bulgarian. However, his work might be a valuable source of knowledge about the culture of the Bulgarian national revival, provided that our reception remains neutral and unaffected by his derogatory language. The main reason for this has no doubt been the difficulty of obtaining documentary material on the wartime period. Although the Communist regime of Bulgaria has published a large number of books and monographs dealing with the country’s role in the war, these works have been concerned mostly with magnifying the importance of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BKP) and the partisan struggle. Despite this bias, useful information can be found in these works when other sources are available to provide perspective and verification. Within recent years, German, American, British, and other diplo­ matic and intelligence reports from the wartime years have become available, and the easing of travel restrictions in Bulgaria has facili­ tated research there. As recently as 1958, when the doctoral thesis of Marin V. Pundeff was presented (“Bulgaria’s Place in Axis Policy, 1936-1944”), there was very little material on the period after June 1941. It is now possible to fill in many of the important gaps in our knowledge of Bulgaria during the entire war.

    The Rescue of Bulgaria's Jews in World War II ON FEBRUARY 13, 1998, Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov accepted on behalf of his ex-Communist nation the Courage to Care Award, which the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) had bestowed upon Bulgaria in recognition of the heroism of its people in saving Bulgarian Jews during World War II. Speaking at a meeting of the League's National Executive Committee in Palm Beach, Florida, the ADL National Director Abraham Foxman presented this prestigious award to President Stoyanov with words of deep gratitude: "Today I am here to say thank you — thank you to a people and a nation that unanimously said 'no' to the Nazi killing machine, 'no' to the deportation trains and concentration camps, and 'yes' to its 48,000 Jews."[1] He praised the Bulgarian people who heroically saved the local Jews by preventing their deportation to Hitler's death camps, even though the Bulgarian government was allied with Nazi Germany during World War II. According to Mr. Foxman, this miraculous salvation of Bulgaria's Jewish community was made possible by the courageous leadership of Bulgarian King Boris III, "whose personal defiance of Hitler and refusal to supply troops to the Russian front or to cooperate with deportation requests set an example for his country."[2] Thanking his host for this high honor, President Stoyanov replied with some modesty, "What happened then should not be seen as a miracle. My nation did what any decent nation, human being, man or woman, would have done in those circumstances….     I. Architectural and Cultural Value: The building is a creation of arch. Nikola Lazarov. Architect Nikola Lazarov is one of the most renowned architects in the second half of the XIX century and the beginning of XX century in the Republic of Bulgaria. He was born on the 1st of April 1870 in the town of Karlovo. Son of the enlightened Ivan Lazarov from the town of Karlovo. Architect Nikola Lazarov graduated with honors "ECOIE Speziale Architekture" in Paris. Some of his best known projects in Bulgaria include: - Stoyan Bachvarov Drama Theatre in the city of Varna; - The house of Petko Bakardzhiev next to the entrance of the Sea Garden in the city of Varna; - University of Economics - Varna; - The Library in Ruse; - The building of the Ministry of Agriculture in the city of Sofia; - Central Military Club in the city of Sofia; - The main building of the Vrania Palace. - Together with architect Hermann Mayer he did the final works on the Euxinograd palace in Varna For more information see Appendix 1 After the restoration of the building performed by Prima 2000 OOD from 2006 until 2010, the building has been declared the most beautiful cultural monument among the vast number of monuments in the city of Varna – Bratya Shkorpil Str. The building is shown to architecture students as an example of best carried out restoration in the city of Varna. In historical perspective the building has been THE FIRST PRIVATE PHARMACY in the city of Varna, as well as PULMONARY DISEASES CLINIC, due to its outstanding location and sunny east and south façade.

Колар, че е избран за длъжността „градский архитектор“. Няколко месеца след Освобождението, на мястото на бъдещата българска столица, той заварва едно изостанало Пориенталско селище с около 3000 къщи, 20 джамии и десетина хана, сбутани около непроходими от кал улички без канализация, водопровод и осветление. С делото на А. Колар, който създава първия й градоустройствен план, започва историята на евро- пейска София. Само за няколко десетилетия, благодарение на труда и таланта на плеяда европей- ски, а по-късно и български архитекти и инженери, тя напълно се променя. Наред с всичките си останали задължения, Антонин Колар проектира и първите публични сгради и обществени пространства: Военното министерство и Военното училище, Градската градина, Грандхотел „България“, Паметника на Васил Левски, Централна- та гара, Офицерския клуб. Те се превръщат в средище на важни обществени събития и прояви, в място за срещи, на които се взимат исторически решения и се раждат идеи за бъдещето.
