    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ResearchArchive at Victoria University of Wellington Freedom and its Enemies: Politics of Transition in West Bengal, 1947-1949 * Sekhar Bandyopadhyay Victoria University of Wellington I The fiftieth anniversary of Indian independence became an occasion for the publication of a huge body of literature on post-colonial India. Understandably, the discussion of 1947 in this literature is largely focussed on Partition—its memories and its long-term effects on the nation. 1 Earlier studies on Partition looked at the ‘event’ as a part of the grand narrative of the formation of two nation-states in the subcontinent; but in recent times the historians’ gaze has shifted to what Gyanendra Pandey has described as ‘a history of the lives and experiences of the people who lived through that time’. 2 So far as Bengal is concerned, such experiences have been analysed in two subsets, i.e., the experience of the borderland, and the experience of the refugees. As the surgical knife of Sir Cyril Ratcliffe was hastily and erratically drawn across Bengal, it created an international boundary that was seriously flawed and which brutally disrupted the life and livelihood of hundreds of thousands of Bengalis, many of whom suddenly found themselves living in what they conceived of as ‘enemy’ territory. Even those who ended up on the ‘right’ side of the border, like the Hindus in Murshidabad and Nadia, were apprehensive that they might be sacrificed and exchanged for the Hindus in Khulna who were caught up on the wrong side and vehemently demanded to cross over.

    India has pledged $1.25 million to the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees as it voiced concern over the fragile situation and ongoing conflicts in the middle-east region. Singapore has the highest achieving students in international education rankings, with its teenagers coming top in tests in maths, reading and science. India was formally designated as a ‘Major Defence Partner’ of the United States. The 2016 World Power Language Index (PLI) announced that English language is the most powerful language in the world. The index was published by World Economic Forum (WEF). Hindi language was ranked 10th in the 2016 PLI. Pakistan has lifted an "undeclared" ban on import of ginned cotton from India, days after rejecting a consignment of 10,000 bales of cotton from India citing violation of plant quarantine rules by importers. In an effort to enhance cooperation in education between the two countries, India will establish a center of excellence in information technology at Egypt's oldest and most prestigious Al- Azhar University. Dr. António Costa, Prime Minister of the Republic of Portugal will be the Chief Guest at the 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention to be held from 7 to 9 January, 2017 at Bengaluru in Karnataka. Mr. Michael Ashwin Satyandre Adhin, Vice President of the Republic of Suriname will be the Special Guest at the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) to be held on 7 January 2017 in Bengaluru. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is India’s highest-ranked institution features in the Top 100 QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2016-17. Turkey will chair the Energy Club of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in 2017, becoming the first non-SCO country to hold its term presidency.

Maharashtra Signs MOUs worth Rs4.8 Trillion at Magnetic Maharashtra Summit Source: Livemint (Link) Maharashtra signed investment commitments worth around Rs4.85 trillion with a number of global and domestic companies on Feb 19, the second day of the Magnetic Maharashtra Global Investors Summit. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state was likely to exceed its target of signing memoranda of understanding (MoUs) worth Rs10 trillion. Ahead of the three-day summit, the state had set a target of signing nearly 4,000 MoUs that would create 3.5 million jobs. On Feb 19, the state entered into 36 agreements which would create around 2.9 million jobs. The MoUs signed on Feb 19 include one between the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Virgin Hyperloop One (Virgin Group) to develop hyperloop connectivity between Mumbai and Pune at an investment of Rs40,000 crore, creating 13,000 jobs. 2.
