This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract Kogyae Strict Nature Reserve, the only one in Ghana, was established to promote scientific re- search, particularly on how nature revitalizes itself after major disasters, and also to check the southward drift of the savannah grassland. This study presents the first comprehensive inventory of species composition and diversity of insects of the Reserve. Insects were surveyed between September 2011 and June 2012 to capture the end of the rainy season, the dry season and the peak of the wet season. Samples were taken from two sites within the Reserve, Dagomba and Oku using various sampling techniques including pitfall traps, malaise traps and sweep nets. Insect com- munities were characterized in terms of, 1) species richness estimators, 2) species richness, 3) Shannon-Weiner Index of Diversity, 4) Pielou’s evenness and 5) Bray-Curtis similarity. -

REMARQUES PRÉALABLES 1 – Présentation sommaire du Togo Situé dans la sous région Ouest africaine, le Togo est un petit pays effilé coincé entre le Bénin à l’Est et le Ghana à l’Ouest. Il est limité au Nord par le Burkina Faso et au Sud par le Golfe de Guinée. Sa superficie est de 56 600 km2. La population est de 4 500 000 habitants avec une densité moyenne de 25 habitants / Km2. La proportion de la femme est de 62%. La zone guinéenne du Togo qui comprend les régions Maritimes et des Plateaux compte 76,6% de pauvre dont 65,5% extrêmement pauvre1. Sur le plan économique, l’évolution du PIB par habitant du Togo en général a progressivement baissé depuis les années 1997 à la suite de la situation socio politique du pays, jointe aux problèmes climatiques qui ont eu des impacts négatifs sur la flore, la faune et la production agricole2. En vue de freiner la pression anthropique sur les ressources naturelles et réduire la pauvreté des populations tributaires des ressources animales et végétales, les divers programme de développement3 proposent dans leur plan d’action, le développement des activités génératrices de revenus afin d’orienter les activités de ces exploitants. -

Habitat: Dense forest and gallery forest. Also in heavy woodland (Kielland, 1990d). In Tanzania subspecies parmeno is found at altitudes from 800 to 2 000 m and subspecies diversa from near sea-level to 1 600 m, occasionally 2 000 m (Kielland, 1990d). Habits: A fairly common butterfly that flies at dusk and dawn. During the day it rests among leaf litter in deep shade (Pringle et al., 1994). -

BUTTERFLIES IN OLOGBO FOREST Dr. Oskar Brattström [email protected] Survey efforts and methodology This survey combines data from tree visits to Ologbo. Initially Robert Warren made a two day survey 8-9 June 2006 and this brief visit produced a number of interesting records. I made a preliminary visit 27-31 October 2008 to asses if the area had potential for future butterfly studies. The result from these two shorter was promising and I therefore returned 22 March – 2 April 2009 to make a more detailed study. The main survey efforts have been concentrated two the South and North-west parts of the Ologbo Forest. Butterflies were captured using hand netting (most days between 09:30-14:00) and banana/pineapple baited traps, in most cases traps were left in the field over nights and re-baited at regular intervals. Captured specimens were either identified immediately in the field or brought back for later identification. There are still a large number of specimens waiting identification. Some species were also indentified on the wings when capture was not possible. One day was spent in the plantation itself (South of the Dura Club) to get an idea of what species of butterflies are present in an area with fully matured oil palms some distance away from a semi-natural forest. In this area only hand netting and visual observation was used, as the typical canopy species which can often only be recorded using traps hardly occur in this type habitat. In general it was very easy to detect and identify butterflies in this more open type of habitat and most of the species were well known savannah butterflies. -

[Interesting records of Lepidoptera in the taiga- and tundra regions of Sweden 1998.1 - Ent. Tidskr. l2O (l-2):43-53. Lund, Sweden 1999. ISSN 0013-886x. This is the fifth report on interesting finds and events from the Swedish mountain range and adjacent areas that are generally not reported in the national lists for Micro- and Macrolepi- doptera. Despite the mostly unfavourable weather, with the exception for a relatively warm period in the very north during the first three weeks ofJuly, a large number of species has been observed during 1998. Some species, such as Metaxmeste schrankiana, Loxostege ephippialis, Pyrgus centaureae, Colias nastes, Pieris napi, Clossianafreija, C. frigga, Eu- phydryas iduna, Erebia pandrose, Caloplusia hochenwarthi, Sympistis heliophila, Anarta melanopa, Xestia lyngei, X. tecta, X. alpicola and X. lorezi, have appeared in higher, or even much higher, numbers than normal. Also taiga forest species, such as Xesrla Laetabilis, X. distensa, X. speciosa andX. rhaetica, were more abundant than during an average year. Presumably this is due to the mainly favourable weather during previous years. Among the more remarkable finds were: Depressaria leucocephala, Coleophora paeltsaella (n sp.), Ptycera petasitis, Gnorimoschema valesiella, G. herbichi, G. nordlandicolella, Diasemia reticulais, Clossiana polaris ald Xestia borealis. Other remarkable finds were: Olethreu- tes boisduvaliana, which was found for the first time in Sweden for more than 20 years; Acerbia alpina which also this year was found in large numbers on NissuntjflLrro and last, but not least, Xestia atrata, which was re-found in Hiirjedalen - this was the third record in Sweden and the fourth in Europe. -

Chapter 10 The Butterflies and Skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) of Angola: An Updated Checklist Luís F. Mendes, A. Bivar-de-Sousa, and Mark C. Williams Abstract Presently, 792 species/subspecies of butterflies and skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) are known from Angola, a country with a rich diversity of habitats, but where extensive areas remain unsurveyed and where systematic collecting pro- grammes have not been undertaken. Only three species were known from Angola in 1820. From the beginning of the twenty-first century, many new species have been described and more than 220 faunistic novelties have been assigned. As a whole, of the 792 taxa now listed for Angola, 57 species/subspecies are endemic and almost the same number are known to be near-endemics, shared by Angola and by one or another neighbouring country. The Nymphalidae are the most diverse family. The Lycaenidae and Papilionidae have the highest levels of endemism. A revised check- list with taxonomic and ecological notes is presented and the development of knowl- edge of the superfamily over time in Angola is analysed.
