The classification for Afrotropical butterflies is placed within a worldwide context to subtribal level. Taxa that still require interrogation are highlighted. Hopefully this classification will provide a stable context for researchers working on Afrotropical butterflies. Key words: Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea, Afrotropical butterflies, classification. I trust you all have returned safely from your December break (assuming you had one!) and are getting into the swing of 2018? With few exceptions, 2017 was a very poor year butterfly-wise, at least in South Africa. The drought continues to have a very negative impact on our hobby, but here’s hoping that 2018 will be better! Braving the Great Karoo and Noorsveld (Mark Williams) In the first week of November 2017 Jeremy Dobson and I headed off south from Egoli, at the crack of dawn, for the ‘Harde Karoo’. (Is there a ‘Soft Karoo’?) We had a very flexible plan for the six-day trip, not even having booked any overnight accommodation. We figured that finding a place to commune with Uncle Morpheus every night would not be a problem because all the kids were at school. As it turned out we did not have to spend a night trying to kip in the Pajero – my snoring would have driven Jeremy nuts ... Friday 3 November The main purpose of the trip was to survey two quadrants for the Karoo BioGaps Project. One of these was on the farm Lushof, 10 km west of Loxton, and the other was Taaiboschkloof, about 50 km south-east of Loxton. The 1 000 km drive, via Kimberley, to Loxton was accompanied by hot and windy weather. The temperature hit 38 degrees and was 33 when the sun hit the horizon at 6 pm. -

Bivar de Sousa Abstract One new species of the genus Abantis Hopffer, 1855 is described from Angola (Moxico Province) and compared with the most similar ones - main differences concern the wings shape, dorsal wing pattern and shape of the valves of genitalia; new data are presented relatively to other species of the same genus known to fly in the country. The Genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry
The genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry With the recent migration to Australia of the Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore (Linnaeus, 1758)), (see Creature Feature this issue), I thought it might be timely to take a look at the genus worldwide. It must be noted that due to a misidentification A. terpsicore had long been known as A. violae and many references in the literature and on the web refer to it as A. violae. As with much of the Lepidoptera the genus is in a state of flux, and has long been split into the subgenera Acraea (Acraea) and Acraea (Actinote). The genus is placed in the tribe Acraeini and until Harvey (1991) placed it in the subfamily Heliconiinae it was listed in the subfamily Acraeinae. Recent molecular work has made changes and a current listing of the tribe Acraeini, by Niklas Wahlberg, is available at http://www.nymphalidae.net/Classification/Acraeini.htm. It shows members of the old subgenus Acraea (Actinote) being placed in the genus Actinote, and the old subgenus Acraea (Acraea) becoming the genus Acraea with a subgenus Acraea (Bematistes). It also lists several Acraea as unplaced. This may further change as some believe the subgenus Acraea (Bematistes) will move to the genus Bematistes. The genus is primarily Afrotropical with only four species occurring outside this region, these being, Acraea andromacha (Fig. 1) A. meyeri (Fig. 10) A. moluccana and A. terpsicore. A fifth species the Yellow Coster Acraea (Actinote) issoria is now referred to the genus Actinote. Like many of the Nymphalidae the larvae feed on plants which contain cyanogens making the larvae and adults poisonous to predators. -

The British Museum set an example by publishing catalogues of some of their Rhopalocera types, and we hope this will be continued. The original description of almost every name in this catalogue has been examined for the correct reference, and where the sex or habitat was wrongly quoted, the necessary correction has been made. -

(WA 16) A LARGE-SCALE MIGRATION OF THE AFRICAN SKIPPER ANDRONYMUS GANDER Evans, 1946 NEAR CALABAR, NIGERIA (LEPIDOPTERA: HESPERIIDAE) Torben B. Larsen Introduction I spent all of March, 1995 surveying the butterflies of the Oban Hills in the Cross River National Park, Nigeria. The Park lies just north of Calabar, the type locality of numerous African butterflies from the past hundred years and more. The Park is by far the largest forest area in Nigeria and one of the largest in West Africa. The habitat is wet evergreen forest in good shape and the park is being conserved and developed by grants from the European Union and Germany, with technical assistance from, among others, the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). It is one of the centres of biodiversity in Africa. I recorded about 430 butterfly species during my own trip. However, many other collectors have been active in the area, so the total confirmed checklist stands at almost 650. My own 'discovery curve', my knowledge of the habitat, and the distribution of other butterflies both east and west of the Park make the prediction that at least 950 species are found in the Park area quite safe. The lowland wet evergreen forest of the southern Nigeria/Cameroun border area is almost certainly the richest habitat anywhere in Africa for butterflies - and by implication other arthropods as well. Nowhere in Asia are as many butterflies found in one locality, but in the Neotropical Region up to 1300 may be found in some localities (B ECCALONI & G ASTON 1995).
