In the Name of Krishna: The Cultural Landscape of a North Indian Pilgrimage Town A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Sugata Ray IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Frederick M. Asher, Advisor April 2012 © Sugata Ray 2012 Acknowledgements They say writing a dissertation is a lonely and arduous task. But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

Mantra means "a sound vibration that relieves the mind of all anxieties". We chant this mantra every day, but why? B. Chanting is the recommended process for this age. As you know, there are four different ages: Satya-yuga, Treta-yuga, Dvapara-yuga and Kali-yuga. Periazhwar was the foster father of Andal or Goda Devi, who composed the famous Tiruppavai & Nacchiyaar Tirumozhi. Periazhwar was content in tending to his garden, offering the flowers daily to Vata Patra Shaayi and leading a pious life. Though he was not a scholar, he was ordered by the Lord to go to Madurai and expound the Vedas to the assemblage scholars at the Pandyan court. On his winning all round acclaim for his exposition he was taken in a procession on elephant back. Then he had a vision of Narayana and Lakshmi, and blessed the divine couple by singing the twelve verses of ‘Pallandu, Pallandu’. His composition Periazhwar Tirumozhi contains 473 verses extolling the deeds of Lord Sri Krishna in his early years.

Kundalini the evolutionary energy in man by Gopi Krishna with an introduction by Frederic Spiegelberg and a psychological commentary by James Hillman London 1970 Stuart & Watkins FIRST PUBLISHED BY RAMADHAR & HOPMAN, NEW DELHI 1967 REVISED EDITION FIRST PUBLISHED IN GREAT BRITAIN I970 BY VINCENT STUART AND JOHN M WATKINS LTD 45 LOWER BELGRAVE STREET LONDON SWI © 1967 BY GOPI KRISHNA © 1967, I97O COMMENTARY BY JAMES HILLMAN MADE AND PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN BY ROBERT CUNNINGHAM AND SONS LTD LONGBANK WORKS ALVA CLACKMANNANSHIRE SCOTLAND SBN 7224 0115 9 Introduction AUTOBIOGRAPHIES mainly concerned with the description of outer life events are today perhaps only written by statesmen, that is in a field where the external historical conditions are more important for the reader than the man and his character itself. Only since Goethe's 'Dichtung und Wahrheit' can we talk about real autobiographies, since only the author himself can report adequately, if at all, about the inner process of his maturing and about the ways of his feeling. Therefore, autobiographies have commanded the literary field in the West during the past century, when men have been apt and able to introvert in a systematic way and thus to explore the vast field of their inner life. Such efforts have recently found their highest pitch in the psychologist C. G. Jung's fascinating account of the ups-and-downs of his inner development even to the very depths of his unconscious. In India we find beginnings of such autobiographical statements as early as the Upanishads and again in our own time, partly influenced by Western trends.

THE ESSENCE OF BHAGAVAD-GITA SRI SRIMAD BHAKTIVEDANTA NARAYANA MAHARAJA SRI SRIMAD BHAKTIVEDANTA NARAYANA MAHARAJA CHAPTER ONE ALWAYS THINK OF ME The scriptures describe many spiritual places, but there is no- where like Vrindavana in the entire universe. Anyone who knows the glories of Vrindavana will understand this, espe- cially if they have received the mercy of Vrindavana. There Sri Krishna and His eternal associates have performed pas- times which are uniquely wonderful. The perfection of spir- itual life is to remember these pastimes, and ultimately to become completely absorbed in the transcendental service moods of Krishna’s eternal associates in Vrindavana, and in their exchanges with Him. These moods and pastimes are described and explained in Srimad-Bhagavatam, which is the supreme transcendental lit- erature. However, to understand Srimad-Bhagavatam, we must first understand the instructions of the Bhagavad-gita. These instructions serve as a foundation, upon which is constructed the palace of the Srimad-Bhagavatam with its twelve floors (the twelve cantos). As long as we do not have the foundation of the instructions of Bhagavad-gita we can only understand Srimad-Bhagavatam in a mundane way, and everything will be ruined. This especially applies to the most confidential topics contained within the Tenth Canto. In the Bhagavad-gita (18.65) we find this verse: man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru mam evaisyasi satyam te pratijane priyo ‘si me “Absorb your mind and heart in Me, become My devotee, worship Me, offer your obeisances to Me, and certainly you 3 will come to Me. I make this promise to you because you are very dear to Me.“ This is the best of all verses in the Bhagavad-gita It is even better than the verse after it (18.66), in which Krishna’s says, sarva dharman parityajya: “Give up all forms of religiosity and come exclusively to My shelter.
