Le- neweaver was such a case; his ministry career ended only after he resigned. “His problem is not occupational or geograph- ical,” wrote the cardinal at the time, “and will follow him wherever he goes.” Having acknowledged the severity of Leneweav- er’s compulsions, the cardinal released him from the clergy but still chose 4 not to inform law-enforcement officials of his crimes.
