1 RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP

Rev. Phillip J. Brown, P.S.S., STB, JD, JCD

Fr. Brown signs the Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity as the 16th President of St. Mary’s Seminary & University.

“Responsible stewardship” has been the overarching member and chairman; as university theology dean, theme of my life as a Christian, my priesthood, and my rector of two , and now President Rector of ministry. It is the attitude I want to impart to St. Mary’s. I often, though not exclusively, see things seminarians and future priests as ministers of the through the lens of civil and canon law, management Gospel and pastors. The idea of Christian stewardship and Church administration. But everything I’ve done as is found in the Sacred Scriptures. It involves five aspects a priest has been directed toward cultivating my own and of priesthood and pastoral ministry as I understand others’ spiritual life, teaching the Catholic faith, and them: forming good pastors.

• Personal qualities Church administrators are required to make an • Parishioners inventory of the goods they administer; secular • Personnel administrators the same. Our faith encourages a regular • Facilities examination of conscience, a kind of spiritual inventory. One very successful rehabilitation program • Finance starts with a rigorous personal inventory. Responsible I have background as a lawyer and business manager; as stewardship begins by taking stock of what we have to Pastor and Priests Personnel Board chairman; as high work with, and how best to use it to fulfill our school , school superintendent, school board responsibilities.

2 In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus says: good care of oneself. It’s about assuring the is well taken Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not care of, and parishioners well-served sacramentally, individually, spiritually, socially as a community, and first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is temporally. Yes, it’s also about paying bills, keeping the lights enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying on, the building heated or air-conditioned, and well the foundation and finding himself unable to finish maintained, and making sure employees are paid just wages. It’s the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, about everything that goes into sensitive pastoral care and good “This one began to build but did not have the pastoral administration. resources to finish.” The Catholic faith is for this world! Directing us toward the Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and world to come, it is practiced in this world. We are called to decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully bring the Catholic faith to today’s world and make it oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand comprehensible to the people of today. It’s about the pastoral troops? needs of today’s Catholics, and missionary evangelization of the world that’s out there today.

PERSONAL QUALITIES PERSONNEL We ask seminarians to do an honest inventory of their talents, skills, dispositions and tendencies. Doing this at the outset and Pastoral ministry involves responsible and sensitive stewardship throughout life is the surest way to marshal and use one’s of employees and volunteers who serve the Church. It’s about resources in the most effective way: to grow in one’s spiritual personnel management that accords with the values and life; to lead others in their spiritual lives; to cultivate fruitful sensibilities of the Catholic faith. We teach seminarians sound prayer and spiritual lives; to develop sound, sensitive pastoral principles of human resource management at St. Mary’s. skills; and to fulfill the many administrative responsibilities of a Stewardship is not just about the needs of the institution, but pastor. We help seminarians to do this so they will be also the personal needs of employees and volunteers. outstanding pastors and spiritual leaders.

PARISHIONERS

Responsible stewardship of parishioners begins with a profound respect for them and their human dignity. It manifests a deep desire to help them grow spiritually and in their personal lives. It involves individual ministry and community building. It is about being a “man for others” and knowing that priests are ordained to be pastors, not policemen. It’s about being available to serve other’s needs, while also taking Fr. Brown teaching Canon Law of Marriage to the third year theologians.

3 FACILITIES

The Church is good at building buildings, not always as good at what it costs to take care of buildings and keep them in tip-top condition. We need buildings and other facilities to practice our faith and thrive as a community. Responsible stewardship means knowing or learning what needs to be done to keep facilities up and making sure it gets done! Facilities are where we meet, eat and sleep, and get much of the ministry of the Church done. Good facilities management is good stewardship of parishioners. St. Mary’s models well responsible stewardship of facilities. We reinforce it in the classroom. Our aim is to train responsible stewards from the moment they graduate and are ordained. Marc Cardinal Ouellet, P.S.S., Prefect of the Congregation of , is congratulated by Fr. Thomas Burke, O.SS.T, Dean of the School of Theology, and Fr. Brown after receiving an honorary degree during the celebration of the 225th anniver - FINANCE sary of the arrival of the Sulpicians in America and the founding of St. Mary’s Seminary. Effective ministry requires finances. Responsible stewardship requires responsible financial management. In today’s Catholic world this involves maintaining sources of revenue and building endowment to stabilize finances. We are doing our deliver quality, effective ministry. best to educate seminarians about finance and financial stewardship. Pastors need to know how to inspire faith and also First Peter says: “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve generosity towards meeting institutional needs. They need to one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” Jesus says know how to reach out to those who can help and let them know in Matthew: “For to everyone who has, more will be given and how they can help. he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” And Paul in 2 Corinthians: “Whoever A principal goal of mine is fully transparent, accountable, and sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows sound management of St. Mary’s finances. We want to grow St. bountifully will also reap bountifully.” Mary’s resources to build for a strong future, to continue serving the Church as St. Mary’s has done so well throughout its These passages speak to us of responsible stewardship, an history. attitude that should pervade our lives as Christians. I would like this to be evident during my tenure at St. Mary’s, and I hope to Jesus tells two parables about stewardship, one about a dishonest pass it along to all our graduates. It is my hope that it will one steward, the other a timid steward. In the first, though the day be said of those responsible for St. Mary’s, and of all our steward cheats his master, he is commended for using worldly graduates: “Well done, my good and faithful servant. 6 STEWARDSHIP : A SEMINARIAN ’S PERSPECTIVE

While visiting eighth grade students at a parish Mary’s Seminary & University are the many school in my home diocese of Wilmington, opportunities I have had to grow in understanding Delaware, last month, the class of 13-year-olds of what it means to be a priest in today’s Church as seemed rather stunned when I informed them that well as to come to a deeper appreciation of seminary formation can last upwards of six years Christian discipleship, which ultimately is a call to once training and a pastoral year is model authentic holiness to others, recognize the factored into the equation. As Church’s teachings on a wide variety of topics, from moral seminarians, we are given ample opportunities to pray issues and canon law to homiletics and sacramental together as community but also to spend time alone in theology. In my own time here, St. Mary’s daily life of loving service for the sake of the Gospel. has afforded me the opportunity to take various representative roles on our house council, most recently as the House President. In this particular position, I have worked to become a bridge of communication between the faculty and seminary students and have strived to create a community that is joyful and focused on growing spiritually through prayer and acts of service. No matter what task one takes on in the seminary community, he is given the support he needs to grow, learn from his mistakes, and become a leader whom others can trust.

St. Mary’s also provides numerous opportunities for each seminarian to work with the community beyond these seminary walls. We serve at shelters and soup kitchens, visit the suffering and dying in our weekly hospital assignments, and take on a variety of roles in local -area parishes. More often than not, it is they – the people to whom we are sent to minister – who actually are our best teachers, for it is they who show us the way in which Christ wants his disciples to love and serve others. Thus, while seeking to model holiness for those we serve, we also witness the holiness they already exude. Rev. Mr. Richard Jasper Fourth Theology Diocese of Wilmington
