Zbirka obsega enajst angleških in tri nemške prispevke, ki tematiko obravnavajo z različnih vidikov – denimo z vidi- ka migracij in manjšin na primeru slovenskih izseljencev v ZDA in Kanadi, v katerem avtorica ugotavlja, v kolikšni meri so se različne generacije izseljencev uspele vključiti v ameriško in kanadsko družbo, ali pa z vidika jezikovne politike madžarske narodne skupnosti v narodnostno mešanem Prekmurju. Sklopu o jeziku, prevajanju in migracijah je posvečenih pet prispevkov: v prvem je osvetljen pomen medzvrstnega prevajanja kot dejavnika ohranjanja narodnostne identitete pri pripadnikih slovenske manjšine v Porabju na Ma- džarskem; v drugem se avtorica osredotoča na delo evropskih in severnoameri- ških protestantskih misionarjev na Kitajskem, še zlasti na njihovo prevajalsko dejavnost. Naslednji članek se osredotoča na rabo z migracijami povezanega be- sedišča v francosko-slovenskem vzporednem korpusu FraSloK, sledita mu dva nemška prispevka. Avtor prvega analizira rabo eksonimov in endonimov za geo- grafske pokrajine in krajevna imena v šestih nemških turističnih vodnikih po Sloveniji; avtorica zadnjega članka v tem sklopu pa ugotavlja, kako je mogoče prek gastronomije spoznavati druge kulture ter na primeru jedilnikov hrvaške- ga mesta Zadar ter njihovih prevodov analizira, katere tuje jedi so postale del dalmatinske kuhinje. Migracije so pogosto tema tudi v literaturi. V tem poglavju je zbranih pet prispevkov. Avtorica prvega v kratki zgodbi pisateljice Alice Munro, ki opisu- je emigracijo škotske družine v Ameriko v začetku 19. stoletja, analizira tiste elemente govora glavnega junaka zgodbe, ki se za prevajalski proces zdijo še posebej zahtevni. V naslednjem prispevku je predstavljen Louis Adamič, ki velja za najvplivnejšega slovenskega izseljenskega avtorja in prvega slovenskega izse- ljenskega prevajalca v angleščino, ki je Američanom približal književnosti in kul- ture Jugoslavije ter drugih slovanskih narodov. V tretjem prispevku tega poglavja je predstavljen sodobni kanadski pisatelj sovjetskega porekla David Bezmozgis. Avtorica analizira zbirko njegovih kratkih zgodb, v katerih pisatelj uporablja tako imenovan angleško-ruski »code-switching«, ter ponudi nekaj prevajalskih rešitev obravnavanja tega postopka v slovenskem prevodu teh del. Predzadnji članek literarnega niza se ukvarja s slovenskimi prevodi dveh frankofonih in ene- ga postkolonialnega avtorja, pri čemer avtorica skuša predstaviti potek uvrščanja kulturnospecifičnih izrazov v original in strategije njihovega prevajanja. Zadnji prispevek je napisan v nemškem jeziku, njegovi avtorici pa se na primeru roma- na Daldossi oder das Leben des Augenblicks pisateljice Sabine Gruber lotevata poj- ma migracij v sklopu vojne tematike. V prispevku predstavita prevode izsekov tega romana v hrvaščino ter jih analizirata na sintaktični, leksikalni, semantični ter stilistični ravni. TRANSLATION AND / UND MIGRATION 9 Prevajanje_in_migracije_FINAL.indd 9 4.6.2019 14:46:03 UVOD Skozi prizmo prava pa so migracije obravnavane v zadnjih dveh člankih; v pr- vem avtorici predstavita pravne klinike kot pomoč marginaliziranim in socialno šibkejšim članom prebivalstva, ki nimajo možnosti drugih oblik pravne pomoči, pri čemer se osredotočata na vprašanje, ali tovrtstne klinike zagotavljajo ob prav- ni podpori tudi prevajalske in / ali tolmaške storitve, namenjene priseljencem, beguncem, prosilcem za azil in drugim, ki ne razumejo ali govorijo slovenskega jezika. V zadnjem prispeveku pričujoče monografije pa so predstavljene nekatere posebnosti pravnega jezika. Ta je laikom pogosto nerazumljiv, nekatera pravna dejanja obdaja slovesno, skoraj mistično vzdušje, čemur botruje raba določenega bolj ali manj nerazumljivega diskurza, pogosto podkrepljenega z rabo značilnih simbolov in strogo porazdelitvijo prostora v sodni dvorani kot tudi uporaba za sodno okolje značilnih pripomočkov in ceremoniala. Le če se v celoti zavedajo teh izrecnih, pa tudi manj očitnih razsežnosti pravnega diskurza, bodo pravni prevajalci in tolmači lahko opravljali svojo vlogo v interesu udeležencev v pravni komunikaciji, še posebej tistih šibkejših in bolj ranljivih. Urednice upamo, da bo ob tako pestrem naboru člankov marsikdo lahko našel kaj zanimivega ter da delo ne bo samo sebi namen, temveč da bo šlo med ljudi in v branje. The direct contact of Slovene and English in the case of Slovene Americans and Canadians is examined from two perspectives: social and cultural on the one hand and linguistic on the other. In the fi rst part, I present the general linguistic situation in Cleveland (and to a minor extent in Washington, D.C. and Toronto), with emphasis on language maintenance and shift, the relationship between mother tongue preservation and ethnic awareness, and the impact of extralinguistic factors on selected aspects of the linguistic behavior of the participants in the study. I then compare the use of second person pronouns as terms of address and the use of speech acts such as compliments to determine the role of different cultural backgrounds in the speakers’ linguistic choices. The linguistic part of the analysis focuses on borrowing and code switching, as well as on the infl uence of English on seemingly monolingual Slovene discourse, where the Slovene infl ectional system in particular is being increasingly generalized, simpli- fi ed and reduced, and Slovene word order is beginning to resemble that of English. Finally, the rapidly growing impact of English on Slovene in Slovenia on various linguistic levels from vocabulary to syntax and intercultural communication is discussed.

I remember his care- ful and well-organized instructions with background information on the dances. I recall thinking that his fine teaching had to do with his knowledge of Kinetography Laban, which is an excellent tool to perceive and to analyze dancing movements, but also to describe movements to those of us who were not familiar with the dance forms.

Ross Johnson Brendan Simms Principal author Matjaž Klemenčič acknowledges the extensive input by team members, including several pages of text contributed by Marko Attila Hoare, Charles Ingrao and Albert Bing. Funding from the National Endow- ment for Democracy and the Slovenian Research Council facilitated Prof. Klemenčič’s research, including numerous interviews with Slovenian gov- ernment officials and former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker. Profs. Klemenčič and Dušan Janjić assumed team leadership from John A. Fine (2001-2003) in order to streamline the team’s internet commu- nication. An initial draft was submitted for project-wide review in Novem- ber 2003, which mandated considerable expansion in the chapter’s length and research base. Although the text was adopted following project-wide review in April 2005, further revisions were undertaken in 2008 to address concerns raised by two of the four outside referees in 2010, to accommodate constructive criticism raised in book reviews, and again in 2012 to incorpo- rate new evidence of U.S. and NATO complicity in avoiding the arrest of ICTY indictees. The chapter cites several confidential interviews conducted by SI scholars with several current and former officials from the U.S. State De- partment and IFOR military; in each case their identities have been recorded and stored in the Purdue University archives for later release, upon request, consistent with terms negotiated with each individual.

Arriving as sojourners and settlers, these new immigrants of various social classes and nationalities found commonality in their belief that America could change their lives for the better. Due to the chaotic nature of immigration, these new immigrant groups found solace and support among members of their own ethnicity. As a consequence, ethnic communities emerged throughout America’s cities and countryside. These communities functioned and survived by providing cultural familiarity in a new land, as well as, economic and social services to immigrants in return for their member support.

In examining Yugoslav overseas nation-building, this dissertation is interested in the mechanics of diasporic networks—what catalyzes their formation, what are the roles of international organizations, and how are they influenced by the political context in the host country. The life of Louis Adamic, who was a central figure within this emerging network, provides a framework for this monograph, which begins with his arrival in the United States in 1914 and ends with his death in 1951. Each chapter spans roughly five to ten years. Chapter One (1914-1924) deals with the initial encounter between Yugoslav diplomats and emigrants. Chapter Two (1924-1929) covers the beginnings of Yugoslav overseas nation-building. Chapter Three (1929-1934) covers Yugoslavia’s shift into a royal dictatorship and the corresponding effect on its emigration policy.

Within an area of 20,000 km2, we can admire its exceptional geographical diversity with rich natural and cultural traditions. It is precisely this mark of its position and natural conditions that have importantly denoted the character of Slovenians, while the turbulence of historically important transport routes has added vitality and inspired their creativity. You really have to love Slovenia. The feeling of affection for and belonging to Slovenia is indelible.

Bennett "Slovenes came to Washington, D.C. as individuals and as families and did not come to form ethnic enclaves. In Cleveland it was a question of survival, and now they still form small ethnic enclaves in the suburbs. They came to Washington because they had certain occupations, and they didn't depend on their ethnic group to get started. "As far as my job is concerned, it is irrelevant that I am a Slovene. I came to Washington totally as an American with a strong ethnic background. I have never been part of an ethnic enclave in the United States, and I haven't needed other Slovenes for personal survival. Instead, when I got to Washington, I found that being with other Slovenes provided a positive and enjoyable influence on my life. It's been a matter of choice. We get things done only through voluntary cooperation, which takes more effort and commitment on the part of a relatively small number of people. But I feel most comfortable with that sort of arrangement." -A first-generation Slovene. 1 INTRODUCTION To be Slovene in Washington, D.C., is a special ethnic experience. By choice, these individuals, families and friends feel and express their ethnicity in a manner fitting their own backgrounds and the unique features of the metropolitan area. ABSTRACT In 1885, the mining settlement of Rock Springs, Wyoming, witnessed one of the worst episodes of ethnocentric violence in the urban West as Euroamerican miners massacred Chinese laborers and burned Chinatown to the ground. Less than four decades later, in 1926, inhabitants of Rock Springs, including immigrants and natives, Asian Americans and Euroamericans, came together at a time of heightened national ethnic tensions to celebrate the diversity of their municipal community in the first of four annual "International Night" festivals. This study explores the apparently dichotomous reality of Rock Springs from its establishment as a mining camp during the building of the Union Pacific Railroad in the late 1860s to the conclusion of the International Night movement in the mid- to late 1920s The focus of this dissertation centers upon the role of immigrants and their descendents in constructing diverse community networks and how they syncretized those varied networks into a unifying ethos of "municipal community," an identity expressed through their sense of ethno-racial boundaries, western heritage, inter-class cooperation, and negotiation with monopoly capitalism.
