Com Services in Merstham A5 Nov2012.Indd Merstham Community Directory SERVICES ON YOUR DOORSTEP LOCAL FUNDS FOR YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY TravelTravel SMART in Redhill/Reigate is a new initiative designed to provideid llocal l people l with ith more travel t l choices h i and d hhelp l ththem cut t carbon, calories and cost. It aims to make it easier for people to travel and/or reduce the need to travel by bringing services into local communities. As part of the initiative’s funding has been allocated to Merstham, local community groups and organisations can apply for money to develop projects which they believe will improve access to travel in the local area. Everyone in Merstham will then get the chance to vote for the projects they think will bring most benefit to the area. Local people know their area best, and this project puts them right at the heart of decision making. What’s available? Groups can apply to the Small Community Grant Fund for projects up to £3,000 or the Merstham Fund for projects up to £10,000. Projects must either make it easier for people to travel or bring services into the community, reducing the need to travel. In addition, projects need to achieve at least one of the following objectives: O Help people make better travel choices and improve accessibility. OImprove people’s access to jobs/skills. OEncourage people to live healthier lifestyles. Who decides? Local residents will decide which projects will receive funding at a community event. Each group submitting an application will be asked to make a short presentation to gain support for their project. Residents will have the opportunity to vote for the projects and schemes they’d like to receive funding at the event. Funding will be allocated to the projects with the highest scores until the funding has run out. Results will be announced on the day. Contents 1.     WEEKLY BULLETIN — 11 march 2016 From the Headmaster Last weekend was particularly busy in the vibrant RGS calendar with hundreds of visitors attending events at the school. On Sunday 6 March over 40 schools descended upon RGS Hartswood for the 2016 Reigate Charity 7s, sponsored by John Laing. Now established as one of the most popular tournaments in the country, schools from the length and breadth of the country arrived bright and early for the exciting day of rugby ahead. Harrow faced Reigate Grammar School in the Boys’ Cup Final and in a powerful display it was Harrow who ran out eventual winners with a 34-14 victory against a young but talented RGS side. This was a thrilling match, refereed by Wayne Barnes who took time out of his busy international and domestic schedule to officiate the proceedings. In the girls’ competition, the RGS girls’ VII also put in some tremendous performances throughout the day, culminating in a comprehensive 29-5 victory over King Henry VIII School in the Shield Final. On Saturday 5 March the Dining Hall was full of former students who, along with former and current staff and parents, joined together to celebrate Aubs' Day in memory of Aubrey Scrase who passed away last year having been a member of the school community since 1956. The uplifting atmosphere truly reflected the purpose of the day: to celebrate Aubs the man, educator and all round inspiration to many. Upon hearing the rendition of the school song, To be A Pilgrim, some questioned whether it had ever been sung with such passion and conviction! A highlight from the day came from those who shared their personal stories and memories of Aubs.

Project overview This project was delivered in East Surrey and the surrounding area aligning to the Surrey & Sussex Healthcare Trust footprint for the delivery of healthcare services, including East Surrey, North-east West Sussex, and South Croydon. The health and social care challenges are identified in the Health Education England Facing the Facts, Shaping the Future: A draft health and care workforce strategy (2017). Health Education England’s ten year forward view shows that if no action is taken to reduce demand through prevention or service transformation, the NHS will need to grow by 190,000 clinical posts by 2027. The national audit office also identified shortfalls in workforce provision with vacancy rates at 5.9% (2014). The national picture is reflected at a local level. SASH sits within the Sussex and East Surrey sustainability and transformation programme (STP) footprint. This STP includes 24 organisations working collaboratively to provide healthcare services. The STP is responsible for developing a local area strategy to drive service transformation incorporating workforce strategy. The STP identified that to provide patient centred care nearer to home, new skills and an increased use of technology are required. For example, East Surrey has an ageing population, therefore many individuals have multiple healthcare conditions needing complex care. The STP has also identified the need to attract more young people, and a requirement to provide information on the range of careers available to encourage health and social care to become a ‘career of choice’.

This week saw a successful Year 10 History GCSE trip to the London Docklands Museum. A full report will be in next week’s newsletter. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, the children who went to Iceland over half term had a thoroughly enjoyable time as you will see later in the newsletter. Forecasts are showing that we may also have some wintery weather over the next few weeks.
