Each year, high-resolution digital imaging technology belonging to the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties is employed to image these works from the 12th century or earlier to gather data that enables researchers to study in greater detail the techniques employed to produce the works. Such data has revealed the use of extraordinary techniques that would not have been apparent with the naked eye. Researchers from the two institutions explore how these techniques were used to create such sophisticated pictorial depictions of Buddhist deities so many centuries in the past. As part of this year’s study, a painting of Cundi (Juntei- Kannon) (Important Cultural Property) and a painting of Samantabhadra (Fugen Bosatsu) (National Treasure) were imaged on February 23rd, 2017 in high-resolution color in sections, along with all of this year’s National Treasure selections. -

Loka Nat is the only Mahayana Deity left in this Theravada country that Myanmar displays his image openly, not knowing that he is the Mahayana Deity appearing everywhere in the world in a variety of names: Avalokitesvara, Lokesvara, Kuan Yin, Kuan Shih Yin and Kannon. The younger generations got lost in the translation not knowing the name Loka Nat means one and the same for this Bodhisatta known in various part of the world as Avalokitesvara, Lokesvara, Kuan Yin or Kannon. He is believed to guard over the world in the period between the Gotama Sasana and Mettreyya Buddha sasana. Based on Kyaikhtiyoe Cetiya’s inscription, some believed that Loka Nat would bring peace and prosperity to the Goldenland of Myanmar. Its historical origin has been lost due to artistic creativity Myanmar artist. The Myanmar historical record shows that the King Anawratha was known to embrace the worship of Avalokitesvara, Loka Nat. Even after the introduction of Theravada in Bagan, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Lokanattha, Loka Byuhar Nat, Kuan Yin, and Chenresig, had been and still is the most revered Mahayana deity, today. -

Transmission of the Lamp
The Hokun Trust is pleased to support the third volume of a complete translation of this classic of Chan (Zen) Buddhism by Randolph S. Whitfield. The Records of the Transmission of the Lamp is a religious classic of the first importance for the practice and study of Zen which it is hoped will appeal both to students of Buddhism and to a wider public interested in religion as a whole. Contents Preface Acknowledgements Introduction Book Ten Book Eleven Book Twelve Book 13 Finding List Bibliography Index Preface This third volume (books 10-13 of 30) of the first complete translation into English of the Jingde Chuandeng Lu , Records of the Transmission of the Lamp (hereafter CDL), brings us to the end of the entries from Nanyue Huairang ( ). We meet many of the big names here, made popular by Western scholars over the last fifty years or so. In 1960 Wilhelm Gundert published the first volume of his ground-breaking German translation Niederschrift von der Smaragdenen Felswand ( Record from the Emerald Cliff),1 published in China in 1125 CE ( Jap. Hekiganroku). R.H. Blyth first published his translation of another collection, The Gateless Gate ( Jap. Mumonkan) in 19662 (originally published in China in 1229 CE) and dedicated it to Suzuki Daisetz. In 1977 Thomas and J.C. Cleary’s translation, The Blue Cliff Record,3 appeared. These classic gong’an (kōan) collections have tantalised us ever since. Chang Chung-Yuan ( ) published his influential translation of excerpts from the CDL in 1969.4 The CDL, sourcebook for most of the gong’an collections, was first published in China around 1011 CE. -
