For bedding plants thick foliage and rich in blooming are traditionally appreciated. However, plants with modest growth habit may form a very decorative group if planted in great numbers. Therefore, to determine the suitability of a species for bedding purposes, not only single plant should be evaluated. Data collected during several years from the experimental collection of many ornamental bedding plants form the basis of this research. All species were planted in groups, with minimum 30 plants in each. The evaluations of decorative properties of species were analysed per group. In addition to height, number and diameter of flowers, thickness of a plant group were considered as an important property. Thickness was characterized by the vertical distribution of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in a plant group. New aspects to be followed in choosing species suitable for bedding plants and some methods to be used in comparing new bedding plants are discussed. 1. Introduction The breeders of new ornamentals often face the question if the new product corresponds to consumer requirements. To bring a new floricultural crop to the market, thorough research and breeding work is needed. By the time the results are available the trend can be over and the crop in the phase of decline in its life cycle (Vonk Noordegraaf, 1998). -

RESEARCH ARTICLE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF BOTANY A phylogenetic study of the tribe Antirrhineae: Genome duplications and long-distance dispersals from the Old World to the New World 1 Ezgi Ogutcen2 and Jana C. Vamosi PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Antirrhineae is a large tribe within Plantaginaceae. Mostly concentrated in the Mediterranean Basin, the tribe members are present both in the Old World and the New World. Current Antirrhineae phylogenies have diff erent views on taxonomic relationships, and they lack homogeneity in terms of geographic distribution and ploidy levels. This study aims to investigate the changes in the chromosome numbers along with dispersal routes as defi nitive characters identifying clades. METHODS: With the use of multiple DNA regions and taxon sampling enriched with de novo sequences, we provide an extensive phylogeny for Antir- rhineae. The reconstructed phylogeny was then used to investigate changes in ploidy levels and dispersal patterns in the tribe using ChromEvol and RASP, respectively. KEY RESULTS: Antirrhineae is a monophyletic group with six highly supported clades. ChromEvol analysis suggests the ancestral haploid chromosome number for the tribe is six, and that the tribe has experienced several duplications and gain events. The Mediterranean Basin was estimated to be the origin for the tribe with four long-distance dispersals from the Old World to the New World, three of which were associated with genome duplications. CONCLUSIONS: On an updated Antirrhineae phylogeny, we showed that the three out of four dispersals from the Old World to the New World were coupled with changes in ploidy levels. The observed patterns suggest that increases in ploidy levels may facilitate dispersing into new environments. -

Threatened Species Scientific Committee’s Advice for the Wetlands and inner floodplains of the Macquarie Marshes 1. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and has obligations to present advice to the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Water (the Minister) in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. 2. The Committee provided this advice on the Wetlands and inner floodplains of the Macquarie Marshes ecological community to the Minister in June 2013. 3. A copy of the draft advice for this ecological community was made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister had regard to all public and expert comment that was relevant to the consideration of the ecological community. 4. This advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time it was assessed: this includes scientific literature, government reports, extensive advice from consultations with experts, and existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this ecological community. 5. This ecological community was listed as critically enadangered from 13 August 2013 to 11 December 2013. The listing was disallowed on 11 December 2013. A typical feature for most wooden species is an open minor vein structure with symplastic connections between mesophyll cells and phloem cells, which allow sucrose to move cell-to-cell through the plasmodesmata into the phloem. Fraxinus excelsior (Oleaceae) also translocates raffinose family oligosaccharides in addition to sucrose. Sucrose concentration was recently shown to be higher in the phloem sap than in the mesophyll cells. This suggests the involvement of apoplastic steps and the activity of sucrose transporters in addition to symplastic phloem-loading processes. In this study, the sucrose transporter FeSUT1 from F.
