However, there are different problems that can potentially arise from teaching this play. For example, the only type of romance explored in the text is forbidden young love that ends in suicide. This should not be the type of romance that young students can relate to as it is not a healthy model to follow. In a report in the Digital Journal Mullins said, “There are times when young lovers who face problems from the outside turn to suicide.

From this hierarchy, gender inequalities —which are especially harmful to women—emerge. Nonetheless, this discrimination does not only take place in relation to gender but also regarding race and sexuality. Hence, this study aims to analyse from a feminist and intersectional perspective the oppressive character of romantic love narratives in terms of gender, race and sexuality. The focus will be put particularly in contemporary film adaptations of the canonical play Romeo and Juliet —which is a cornerstone love story in western culture— emphasizing the importance of representations in mass media by pointing at the potential influence that they exercise on the viewers.

  • The Pedagogisation of Sex, the Sexualisation of Pedagogy Foucault, Shakespeare, and Adolescent Sexuality Dan Colson
© An Interdisciplinary Journal of North American Studies Issue 22 ∙ Autumn 2008 Myth & Legacy The Pedagogisation of Sex, the Sexualisation of Pedagogy Foucault, Shakespeare, and Adolescent Sexuality Dan Colson This paper argues that, at present, Romeo and Juliet is used in American high schools not as an introduction to literature, or a study in universal human behaviour as many claim, but rather it serves as part of a repressive discourse that creates a Foucauldian ‘local center of power’. The paper contends that introducing Romeo and Juliet in the public, institutional setting of the American high school generates a three-layered discourse of sexuality that utilises a play filled with sexual liberty as part of an overall strategy of power—the obsessive power of adult America’s investment in the education and sexuality of the younger generation—in order further to codify and reveal transgressive adolescent sexuality: the discourse proper, which appears in the interstices of desire and language; the confessional elements of the text-student interaction; and the cultural establishment Binding Margin Binding and punitive consequences of perversion. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Juliet Effect by Jesse Slattery My Sister’s Keeper. Anna recalls imagining what life would be like if Kate died. It would be painful, but she also thinks of the exciting things she could do if Kate weren’t alive. In the present, Anna sits with her parents in the hospital cafeteria. Vern Stackhouse serves Sara with a temporary restraining order requiring her not to have contact with Anna. Anna says she never asked for that but Sara is furious. Sara and Brian fight in the car about hiring a “real” lawyer. Reporters have gathered at the courthouse, and Anna and Brian wait outside while Sara and Campbell talk to the judge. Julia arrives and asks if Anna wants Sara to leave the house. Anna says that’s not what she wants. She also says she’s changed her mind and doesn’t want to go through with the lawsuit anymore. After Julia leaves, Brian asks Anna if she wants to stay with him at the fire station to give her distance from Sara. They leave together. Summary: Campbell. Outside the courthouse, Campbell speaks to the reporters. He recognizes that he wants to draw attention to the case to capitalize on it. Sara and Campbell speak to Judge DeSalvo. Julia arrives, tells the judge that Anna is confused, and it would be a mistake to remove Sara from the house. Judge DeSalvo refuses to grant the restraining order, but he orders Sara not to say one more word to Anna about the case. Julia, Campbell, and Sara go outside to see Anna only to discover she has left with Brian.

  • Romeo and Juliet: Perceptions of Love of Stigmatized Relationships
Interpersona | An International Journal on Personal Relationships interpersona.psychopen.eu | 1981-6472 Articles Romeo and Juliet: Perceptions of Love of Stigmatized Relationships Thomas R. Brooks a, Stephen Reysen* a, Iva Katzarska-Miller b [a] Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce, TX, USA. [b] Transylvania University, Lexington, KY, USA. Abstract We examined the connection between the perception of love and stigma in relationships and how much stigma needs to be present to elicit a heightened perception of love. Participants in the first study rated several relationships on the degree of stigma each one of them faced, and how much the individuals in each relationship loved each other—the perception of the Romeo and Juliet effect. In the second study, participants read a scenario of a male, gay relationship with various degree of stigma (none, one, two, or three sources), and rated how much the couple loved each other. The results suggest that there is a perception that the Romeo and Juliet effect exists, despite evidence that does not (Sinclair, Hood, & Wright, 2014). Individuals in relationships, which face stigma from multiple sources, are believed to love each other more than those with no stigma. Together, the results suggest that perceived stigma and love in a relationship are positively associated, which runs counter to better supported models of relationship satisfaction (Parks, Stan, & Eggert, 1983). • Revisiting Romeo & Juliet
2013 Revisiting Romeo & Juliet A Registered Replication Proposal in response to the Center for Open Science call for the “Replication of Important Results in Social Psychology” H. Colleen Sinclair, Kristina Hood, & Brittany Wright Mississippi State University and the University of Texas at Austin 2/28/2013 Registered Replication Proposal: REVISITING ROMEO AND JULIET INTRODUCTION The Original Effect The “Romeo and Juliet effect” was coined by Driscoll and colleagues (1972) when they discovered that dating couples who reported an increase in negative parental interference in their romantic relationship also evidenced an increase in love over the same 6-month period. Since the original study, replications of the effect have been elusive. Few studies find support for anything approximating the effect (e.g., Felmlee, 2001; Parks et al., 1983; Sprecher, 2011). Instead, most find the “social network effect” (Felmlee, 2001) whereby disapproval from one’s social network leads to declines in romantic relationship quality (see Allan, 2006; Parks, 2007 for reviews). Nonetheless, much like the story, the lore of the Romeo and Juliet effect persists, and the finding continues to be cited in popular culture, blogs, textbooks, and papers today (e.g., DeWall, et al., 2011; Fisher, 2004; Miller, 2011; a google search for "Romeo and Juliet effect" will yield over 100,000 hits, and discussion of the effect was even mentioned on the recent February 27th episode of Law and Order SVU). It is no surprise that Reis (2011), in his recent review of the history of relationships research, touted the effect as “ever-popular” (pg. 219). After all, none of the studies claiming to refute the Romeo and Juliet effect have been exact replications.

  • Public and Private Affection Women’S Reports of Their Marital Quality
Public and Private Physical Affection Differences between Same-Sex and Different-Sex Couples: The Role of Perceived Marginalization Erin Kent Amani El-Alayli1 Psychology Department, Eastern Washington University Abstract Despite its connection with relationship satisfaction, research on physical affection is scarce and fails to disentangle private and public displays of affection. It is important to examine both types if marginalized couples are less comfortable displaying affection publicly. The present study examined whether same-sex couples display less public (but not private) physical affection than different-sex couples due to stronger feelings of relationship marginalization. It also examined how public/private affection and marginalization relate to relationship satisfaction. Women in committed same-sex and different-sex relationships completed surveys of public affection, private affection, marginalization, and relationship satisfaction online. As predicted, women in same-sex relationships displayed less public affection than those in different-sex relationships, an effect mediated by general societal marginalization. Both private and public affection predicted higher relationship satisfaction, whereas feelings of marginalization by friends/family predicted lower relationship satisfaction. We discuss implications for relationship counseling and propose new ways of looking at marginalization. Keywords: physical affection; public affection; marginalization; relationships; homosexual relationships Imagine wanting to comfort your partner physically or hold your partner’s hand, but feeling reluctant to do so for fear of social disapproval. Many couples use physical affection to comfort their partner and show their love. However, same-sex couples may limit their public displays of affection if they feel a looming sense of social disapproval of their relationship. As a result, they may not reap as many of the relationship- enhancing benefits stemming from physical affection.
