From this hierarchy, gender inequalities —which are especially harmful to women—emerge. Nonetheless, this discrimination does not only take place in relation to gender but also regarding race and sexuality. Hence, this study aims to analyse from a feminist and intersectional perspective the oppressive character of romantic love narratives in terms of gender, race and sexuality. The focus will be put particularly in contemporary film adaptations of the canonical play Romeo and Juliet —which is a cornerstone love story in western culture— emphasizing the importance of representations in mass media by pointing at the potential influence that they exercise on the viewers. -

© An Interdisciplinary Journal of North American Studies Issue 22 ∙ Autumn 2008 Myth & Legacy The Pedagogisation of Sex, the Sexualisation of Pedagogy Foucault, Shakespeare, and Adolescent Sexuality Dan Colson This paper argues that, at present, Romeo and Juliet is used in American high schools not as an introduction to literature, or a study in universal human behaviour as many claim, but rather it serves as part of a repressive discourse that creates a Foucauldian ‘local center of power’. The paper contends that introducing Romeo and Juliet in the public, institutional setting of the American high school generates a three-layered discourse of sexuality that utilises a play filled with sexual liberty as part of an overall strategy of power—the obsessive power of adult America’s investment in the education and sexuality of the younger generation—in order further to codify and reveal transgressive adolescent sexuality: the discourse proper, which appears in the interstices of desire and language; the confessional elements of the text-student interaction; and the cultural establishment Binding Margin Binding and punitive consequences of perversion. Sara and Brian fight in the car about hiring a “real” lawyer. Reporters have gathered at the courthouse, and Anna and Brian wait outside while Sara and Campbell talk to the judge. Julia arrives and asks if Anna wants Sara to leave the house. Anna says that’s not what she wants. She also says she’s changed her mind and doesn’t want to go through with the lawsuit anymore. After Julia leaves, Brian asks Anna if she wants to stay with him at the fire station to give her distance from Sara. They leave together. Summary: Campbell. Outside the courthouse, Campbell speaks to the reporters. He recognizes that he wants to draw attention to the case to capitalize on it. Sara and Campbell speak to Judge DeSalvo. Julia arrives, tells the judge that Anna is confused, and it would be a mistake to remove Sara from the house. Judge DeSalvo refuses to grant the restraining order, but he orders Sara not to say one more word to Anna about the case. Julia, Campbell, and Sara go outside to see Anna only to discover she has left with Brian.
