Vern Stackhouse serves Sara with a temporary restraining order requiring her not to have contact with Anna. Anna says she never asked for that but Sara is furious. Sara and Brian fight in the car about hiring a “real” lawyer. Reporters have gathered at the courthouse, and Anna and Brian wait outside while Sara and Campbell talk to the judge. Julia arrives and asks if Anna wants Sara to leave the house. Anna says that’s not what she wants. She also says she’s changed her mind and doesn’t want to go through with the lawsuit anymore. After Julia leaves, Brian asks Anna if she wants to stay with him at the fire station to give her distance from Sara. They leave together. Summary: Campbell. Outside the courthouse, Campbell speaks to the reporters. He recognizes that he wants to draw attention to the case to capitalize on it. Sara and Campbell speak to Judge DeSalvo. Julia arrives, tells the judge that Anna is confused, and it would be a mistake to remove Sara from the house. Judge DeSalvo refuses to grant the restraining order, but he orders Sara not to say one more word to Anna about the case. Julia, Campbell, and Sara go outside to see Anna only to discover she has left with Brian. Julia tries to talk to Campbell but he avoids her. Once again, his dog, Judge, clearly tries to alert Campbell to something. Julia yells at Campbell while he tries to get away from her. She informs Campbell that Anna said she changed her mind about the petition. Finally, Campbell escapes into an empty room and locks the door. Summary: Jesse. Jesse arrives home to find Julia on his doorstep. He tries to flirt with her. She asks for Anna, but Jesse says no one is home. Julia brushes off Jesse’s continued flirtations and asks him about his family. He tells her a story about a Christmas Eve when he was 12 and Kate was in the hospital. Anna had to be taken in to give white blood cells, and Jesse was sent to a neighbor’s house. He left and chopped down a tree from his family’s front yard, then set it up in the living room and decorated it. The next day when he opened his gifts he realized they were all from the hospital gift shop. Brian and Sara never even noticed the tree. Jesse says that the story explains what it has been like to grow up in his family. He says at least Anna is on their parents’ radar. Summary: Brian. Brian takes Anna to the fire station. He recalls his visit to the hospital earlier that afternoon. Kate slept, and Brian talked to Sara. He told her Anna was going to stay with him at the station. They argued when Brian told Sara he was worried about Anna. Sara said that, unlike him, she worries about both of their daughters. Later that night, the fire station receives a call to a nursing home where a woman has hit her head. Anna goes along and helps. They take the woman to the hospital, and Brian loses track of Anna. He finds her in Kate’s room, curled up on Sara’s lap. He takes her back to the station. Later, Anna and Brian watch a meteor shower from the station’s roof. Anna wonders aloud if it would be possible to find a fallen star. Analysis. Despite the bold decision she has made in bringing the lawsuit, Anna remains immature (or rather, she has the level of maturity appropriate for a thirteen-year-old girl). Though she finds herself in a difficult situation given Kate’s cancer and the legal drama she started, Anna can’t help but think of her school crush or dream of what she wants to be when she grows up. Her circumstances, however, do temper that innocence. She recognizes that her dreams of what she could be later in life depend on whether or not Kate is alive. If Kate dies, Anna has much more freedom, but she will have lost her sister and best friend. Anna simultaneously wants both scenarios and neither scenario to occur. When Brian takes Anna to the firehouse roof, we see how innocent Anna remains as she asks a very childlike question about whether they could find a fallen star. As the story progresses, the cracks forming in Sara’s and Brian’s marriage begin to show more clearly. They obviously love each other, but Anna’s lawsuit has begun taking a toll on them. They argue, for instance, when Brian tells Sara that he is going to take Anna to stay with him at the firehouse, and they do not agree on how to handle the situation. Brian recognizes that Anna feels unhappy. He thinks they should listen to her and give her room to come to her own conclusions about the matter. Sara, on the other hand, still cannot see past Kate’s failing health and does not want to indulge Anna, who Sara thinks is throwing some kind of tantrum with the lawsuit. In their argument, Sara even makes a snide comment about Brian’s handling of the matter when she says that, unlike him, she is worried about both their daughters. Campbell’s motion for a restraining order against Sara demonstrates that Campbell’s main goal at this point remains winning the lawsuit, not necessarily doing what is best for Anna. In his view, removing Sara from the Fitzgerald house will keep Sara from having an influence on Anna. It also makes Sara look bad in court. Both of these effects increase his chances of winning the case. He does not think that Anna might not want her mother removed from her house (after all, Anna still loves Sara, even if she disagrees with her) and he doesn’t consider the rift it would undoubtedly create in the Fitzgerald family. Ironically, Campbell’s actions resemble Sara’s treatment of Anna as a result. By being so focused on winning the lawsuit, Campbell fails to make Anna’s wellbeing his top priority, just as Sara’s focus on saving Kate often meant Anna’s wellbeing became a secondary concern. Both Campbell and Sara sacrifice Anna to win what they see as the larger battle. Julia, on the other hand, recognizes that, as Anna’s guardian ad litem, her only responsibility is to determine what is best for Anna. She has no obligation to any other member of the Fitzgerald family and has nothing to gain from the lawsuit, whether Anna wins or not. The members of the Fitzgerald family, aside from Sara, appear to trust Julia for this reason. Consequently, Julia gets honest, straightforward descriptions of the family’s history from Brian, Kate, and even Jesse. Kate, for instance, tells Julia about a year when she was sick for every holiday and the effect that had on Anna. Jesse, whose interactions with almost everyone to this point have been short and flippant, describes very honestly his memory of one Christmas where he ran away from the neighbor’s house, chopped down a tree, and decorated it inside the Fitzgerald house. His parents, he says, did not notice because they thought only about Kate. All his gifts that year came from the hospital gift shop, indicating that his parents did not consider Christmas beforehand and had put no thought into making the holiday special for their other children. Brooklyn Yeshiva Teacher Accused Of Sexually Abusing Teens In Car, Motel. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Disturbing details have surfaced in the case involving a yeshiva teacher, who is a member of the ultra-Orthodox Satmar community. Yoel Malik, 33, was arrested and charged with “sexual crimes” involving three teenage males, the NYPD said. Sources told 1010 WINS that Malik lured the teens, ages 14 to 16, with alcohol and cigarettes. Juliet Papa of 1010 WINS reported there was another incident involving a fourth boy, who was given alcohol, but said no to sex. Malik worked at Ohr Hameir, a small yeshiva in the basement of a synagogue in Borough Park near Maimonides Medical Center. The yeshiva was run by Malik’s family, but is currently closed due to a financial dispute, 1010 WINS’ Papa reported. Sources told 1010 WINS that the so-called “school” was really a cover for Malik to get near teenage boys. Those sources also said that the “school,” in which there were typically eight to 10 boys in a class, moved from place to place because people in the community had an idea about what was allegedly going on. The charges against Malik involve abuse that allegedly took place in a car and at a motel in Fort Greene, where manager Vittal Pojari identified a photo of Malik, CBS 2’s John Slattery reported. Slattery: “Do you recognize him?” Pojari: “Yeah.” Slattery: “Do you know that he came here with boys?” Pojari: “Yeah.” The hotel manager said he had seen Malik as a customer twice. Pojari: “Before once he came here alone.” Slattery: “He came alone?” Pojari: “Alone.” Slattery: “And then he came here with a boy?” Pojari: “Yeah.” Pojari said the most recent date Malik came to the motel was Jan. 17. Malik was taken into custody late Wednesday after investigators said they received an anonymous tip through a confidential hotline. The call, sources told 1010 WINS, was placed to the hotline after Malik was allegedly seen with a boy at the motel. The two were allegedly seen on video having a smoke. Sources told 1010 WINS that boy was sent off to Israel after the alleged incident. One boy, sources said, was touched in a car while another alleged victim made a claim of oral sodomy. Malik is charged with 12 counts of sexual abuse, four counts of criminal sexual acts, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of forcible touching. “It’s disturbing, I had no idea,” a neighbor told CBS 2’s Slattery. “He wasn’t the most polite person. He was a bit rude here and there, abrasive, but as far as these charges I didn’t think he would go that far or I didn’t think he would be capable of what he’s charged for.” However, one Borough Park resident, whose husband used to be in business with Malik, dismissed the accusations. “I don’t believe it,” she said. Re recent correspondence on Donald Trump’s visit to the UK (Letters, 29 April), may I suggest that the best form of protest would be none. Given that he revels in crowds and mass effect, empty streets, parliament and any other places he is to visit would give him the greatest and most obvious message that he is not welcome here. Ships are inanimate objects and no more female than aircraft or double- decker buses. I call this curious phenomenon “frustration-attraction” but it is better known as the “Romeo and Juliet effect.” Social or physical barriers kindle romantic passion. They enable one to discard the facts and focus on the terrific qualities of the other. Even arguments or temporary breakups can be stimulating. How ironic: as the adored one slips away, the very chemicals that contribute to feelings of romance grow even more potent, intensifying ardent passion, fear, and anxiety, and impelling us to protest and try with all our strength to secure our reward: the departing loved one. As adversity intensifies, so does romantic passion. As you know, dopamine is produced in factories in the “basement” of the brain, then pumped up to the caudate nucleus and other brain regions where it generates the motivation to win designated rewards. If an expected reward is delayed in coming, however, these dopamine-producing neurons prolong their activities—increasing brain levels of this natural stimulant. And very high levels of dopamine are associated with intense motivation and goal-directed behaviors, as well as with anxiety and fear. Psychiatrists Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini, and Richard Lannon maintain that this protest response is a basic mammalian mechanism that activates when any kind of social attachment is ruptured. And these psychiatrists believe, as I do, that this protest reaction is associated with elevated levels of dopamine, as well as with norepinephrine. Rising levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, they say, serve to increase alertness and stimulate the abandoned individual to search and call for help. Rom-com 'Juliet Naked' is indeed romantic and comedic. The adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel is sweet and unprepossessing. By Peter Rainer Film critic. Romantic comedies – good romantic comedies – used to be such a fixture in the Hollywood firmament that when a pretty good one comes along now, it’s likely to be overpraised. “Juliet, Naked,” directed by Jesse Peretz and adapted from the 2009 Nick Hornby novel, will never be mistaken for a classic, but it’s rather sweet and unprepossessing. Unusual for a rom-com these days, it actually manages to be both romantic and comedic. Annie (Rose Byrne) lives with Duncan (Chris O’Dowd), her arts professor boyfriend of 10 years, in an English coastal town, where she works at a museum where her father also worked. Dutiful to a fault, she tolerates Duncan’s fixation on an obscure ’90s rocker, Tucker Crowe, who had one smash album, “Juliet,” and then disappeared from the scene. Duncan manages a fan blog that soaks up much of his at-home time; his workspace is practically a shrine to Tucker. The funny thing about Duncan’s obsession is that, in almost every other way, he’s a schlubby layabout. He’s a genial obsessive. He recognizes he has a good thing going with Annie, if only because she doesn’t really challenge him. (She wants kids, he doesn’t, so no kids.) But Annie finds her mettle when a package containing an acoustic demo for the “Juliet” album mysteriously finds its way to Duncan in the mail and she opens it first and plays it without telling him. For Duncan, this preemption of male privilege is galling, but the best is yet to come: She thinks the demo is mediocre and says so on his fan blog. This sacrilege has the unintended effect of drawing out the actual Tucker Crowe, who agrees with her. An email “courtship” ensues. If all this sounds a bit twee and Nora Ephron-ish, you would not be wrong, but Peretz and the screenwriters – Evgenia Peretz, Jim Taylor, and Tamara Jenkins – keep things refreshingly funky. And when Tucker, played by Ethan Hawke, enters the picture, lured to London on a rather contrived pretext, the dual elements in this rom-com cohere. Hawke is perfect casting because, as an actor, he already carries the superannuated Generation X vibes that define Tucker. Showing up looking rather shaggy and lumpy, he is the quintessential rocker gone to seed, but there is no bitterness in him. It’s clear he didn’t covet fame, and he doesn’t seem to be hampered by any artistic regrets, either. It’s not obvious from the music of his that we hear if we are supposed to regard him as a neglected genius or just a semi- talented has-been, but it almost doesn’t matter. “Juliet, Naked” isn’t about Tucker’s second chance as an artist; it’s about his second chance at a life. Inheritance, fairness, and the billionaire class. Tucker – who arrives in London with his doting young son Jackson (Azhy Robertson) in tow, his fifth child by four different women – has been living in the garage behind an ex-wife’s house in New York and living off royalties. By the time he and Annie meet up, Duncan has already moved out, courtesy of an affair with a fellow faculty member, so the coast is clear for a tentative connection. Annie clearly outgrew her relationship with Duncan. The question for her now is whether she can grow into a new one. Get the Monitor Stories you care about delivered to your inbox. Byrne is such a quicksilver presence that it is not always believable that Annie would often be so lacking in self-esteem. But her somewhat generic British reserve plays well opposite Tucker’s shambling Americanness. They fulfill one of the central tenets of the rom-com genre: Opposites attract. But the attraction is tentative and slow-growing, and this saves the movie from slickness. We seem to discover them as they are discovering each other. One of the bright sidelights to “Juliet, Naked” is the bemused way it deals with the crazy-making ramifications of hero worship. The film is asking what you would do if you actually met your idol. When Duncan first comes across Tucker, he doesn’t even recognize him as who he is. And when he does later, the confab does not go well. What Duncan doesn’t get is that rockers are much more (and also much less) than the sum of their recordings. It’s part of Duncan’s man-boy immaturity that he can’t comprehend Tucker for who he really is. But Annie does, and this is her saving grace. It turns out to be Tucker’s, too. Grade: B+ (Rated R for language.)
