The Secret Life of London's Bridges
The Secret Life of London’s Bridges In its long and chequered history, Hungerford Bridge has been neglected, demolished and bombed, before being transformed in one of London’s most spectacular makeovers. Isambard Kingdom Brunel built the original suspension bridge to connect the South Bank with Hungerford Market, a competitor to Covent Garden Market located at Charing Cross. At the time, it was one of the longest suspension bridges ever built. The innovative design attracted the attention of pioneering photographers. A fragile snap taken shortly after the bridge’s opening in 1845 by William Henry Fox Talbot – who invented the ‘calotype’ technique that dominated photography until the 20th century – is among the earliest photographs still in existence. But despite its photogenic appeal, the bridge was not a success. Even Brunel wasn’t a fan, writing in his diary that he had ‘condescended to be the engineer of this, but I shan’t give myself much trouble about it’. The bridge was demolished just 15 years after it had been built and was replaced with a crossing made of wroughtiron lattice girders sufficiently strong to bear the steam trains that served the newly opened Charing Cross station. Hungerford Bridge remained a workaday railway bridge until 2002 when it underwent a dramatic conversion. A pair of elegant suspension footbridges were added – named the Golden Jubilee Bridges in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Queen’s accession – and suddenly it became one of the Thames’s most visually striking and popular crossings. It was a remarkable turnaround, but not the first piece of luck that the bridge has enjoyed – Hungerford is the only Thames bridge to take a direct hit during the Second World War. -

Early British Railway System/Casson Counterfactual THE EARLY BRITISH RAILWAY SYSTEM, THE CASSON COUNTERFACTUAL, AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CENTRAL PLANNING Andrew Odlyzko School of Mathematics University of Minnesota [email protected] How large is the “first mover disadvantage,” in which a pioneer in deployment of new technologies incurs costs due to the immature state of that technology and to lack of knowledge about its application? And to what extent can those costs be mitigated by central planning? Mark Casson's book, The World's First Railway System, demonstrataes that the British rail system on the eve of World War I could have been replaced by a much more efficient one, with reductions of cost and mileage in the 25-35 percent range. Much of that inefficiency can be attributed to the early days of British railways, in the 1830s and 1840s. It was due to incorrect notions about the nature of demand for railway service and about economic growth--notions that were recognized by only a few contemporary observers as incorrect. Since the correct views were rare and contrarian, it is likely (as was claimed by some experts in the early 1850s) that central planning in the 1840s would have led to an even less efficient system than the one produced by the decentralized, competitive, and admittedly wasteful historical process. Introduction Britain was the world leader in the development of railways. Much of the development of the British rail network occurred in the early days, when little was known either of how far the technology would improve or how much demand for it would exist. -

Dionysius Lardner, the denigrated sage of early railways Andrew Odlyzko Abstract. Dionysius Lardner has a very poor reputation in the railway his- tory literature. In most other fields he also tends to be remembered either for a few of his occasionally spectacular mistakes or at most as a minor science and technology popularizer. He has not received proper credit for his striking 1846 survey of the railway industry, ‘Railways at home and abroad.’ Published at the peak of the Railway Mania, it provided an excellent overview of that rapidly developing industry. Most important, it punctured several false myths that motivated investors. Had proper heed been paid to Lardner’s warnings, much of the investment disaster of the Mania could have been averted. This episode of financial exuberance can be shown to have been doomed to fail, and among contemporary observers Lardner provided the most convincing and com- prehensive arguments to demonstrate this. However, little attention was paid to his warnings. This episode provides another illustration of the difficulty in persuading the public as well as policy makers that a dangerous bubble is in progress and bound to fail. Introduction The Rev. Dr. Dionysius Lardner (1793 – 1859) has not been treated kindly by railway historians. An extreme example is Rolt’s characterization of Lardner as an ‘egregious ass [who kept] popping up to provide comic relief to the dullest piece of research’1. And it is indisputable that Lardner did make numerous mistakes, although it has to be said that the majority of the popular tales about him are embellished, often greatly so. -
