The Secret Life of London's Bridges The Secret Life of London’s Bridges In its long and chequered history, Hungerford Bridge has been neglected, demolished and bombed, before being transformed in one of London’s most spectacular makeovers. Isambard Kingdom Brunel built the original suspension bridge to connect the South Bank with Hungerford Market, a competitor to Covent Garden Market located at Charing Cross. At the time, it was one of the longest suspension bridges ever built. The innovative design attracted the attention of pioneering photographers. A fragile snap taken shortly after the bridge’s opening in 1845 by William Henry Fox Talbot – who invented the ‘calotype’ technique that dominated photography until the 20th century – is among the earliest photographs still in existence. But despite its photogenic appeal, the bridge was not a success. Even Brunel wasn’t a fan, writing in his diary that he had ‘condescended to be the engineer of this, but I shan’t give myself much trouble about it’. The bridge was demolished just 15 years after it had been built and was replaced with a crossing made of wroughtiron lattice girders sufficiently strong to bear the steam trains that served the newly opened Charing Cross station. Hungerford Bridge remained a workaday railway bridge until 2002 when it underwent a dramatic conversion. A pair of elegant suspension footbridges were added – named the Golden Jubilee Bridges in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Queen’s accession – and suddenly it became one of the Thames’s most visually striking and popular crossings. It was a remarkable turnaround, but not the first piece of luck that the bridge has enjoyed – Hungerford is the only Thames bridge to take a direct hit during the Second World War. Fortunately, the bomb didn’t detonate. “I have always liked Hungerford Bridge. I had prepared the paper in full before I delivered it, in anticipation of advanced copies being circulated before the meeting so that a more informed discussion could take place after the presentation. I would now like to address the points your raise in your letter. The paper describes suspension bridge engineering as it was known and understood in March, 1831 when Isambard Brunel was appointed Engineer to the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trustees. His father, Marc, had made a minor contribution to this corpus of knowledge when he designed two small suspension bridges for the Île de Bourbon, a French island colony now call Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Other than that Isambard was reliant on the work of Samuel Brown, Thomas Telford and William Tierney Clark in particular, all of whom had designed what appeared to be, at the time of their construction, successful bridges. The Brunels, father and son, drew heavily on this technology when designing the bridge for Clifton. I would argue that Marc was the “lead” engineer, not Isambard. The design was refined and improved at the instigation of Davies Gilbert who was one of the two referees acting for the Trustees when evaluating the competing designs in March, 1831.

R A Berman 1 | P a g e Abstract Following the appointment of its first aristocratic Grand Masters in the 1720s and in the wake of its connections to the scientific Enlightenment, ‘Free and Accepted’ Masonry rapidly became part of Britain’s national profile and the largest and arguably the most influential of Britain’s extensive clubs and societies. The new organisation did not evolve naturally from the mediaeval guilds and religious orders that pre-dated it, but was reconfigured radically by a largely self-appointed inner core. Freemasonry became a vehicle for the expression and transmission of the political and religious views of those at its centre, and for the scientific Enlightenment concepts that they championed. The ‘Craft’ also offered a channel through which many sought to realise personal aspirations: social, intellectual and financial. Through an examination of relevant primary and secondary documentary evidence, this thesis seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of contemporary English political and social culture, and to explore the manner in which Freemasonry became a mechanism that promoted the interests of the Hanoverian establishment and connected and bound a number of élite metropolitan and provincial figures.

    THE MARKET PLACE AND THE MARKET'S PLACE IN LONDON, c. 1660 -1840 CoHn Stephen Smith Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON 1999 2 Abstract THE MARKET PLACE AND THE MARKET'S PLACE IN LONDON, c. 1660 - 1840 This study explores the contemporary collective significance of over seventy London markets in the 'long' eighteenth century. Markets are loosely defined as those institutions which were publicly recognized as places of regular trade in basic commodities: meat and livestock, fish and corn, fruit and vegetables, hay and straw, cloth, coal and animal skins. Their characteristics and development were shaped by a range of factors: principally 'market forces', but also political concerns and the growth and modernization of the metropolis. This thesis represents the first attempt to consider the markets of London during this period collectively and eclectically. One of its principal elements, therefore, is the classification of markets according to various criteria (e.g. size, ownership, location) over time (Chapter Two). One key trend is the apparent rise and fall of food market retailing, which is explained by various economic and cultural factors (Chapter Three). The economics of wholesaling demonstrate that formal market mechanisms generally adapted to changing times and performed the task of distribution with reasonable efficiency (Chapters Four and Five). Political influences on the geography and development of the markets - the role of market rights and regulations - highlight the distinctive and complex political economy of the metropolis (Chapter Six). A final dimension of inquiry concerns the relationship between markets and the city environment, and the extent to which metropolitan growth and 'improvement' impinged on the traditionally focal and symbolic status of markets (Chapter Seven).
