Holy Week Grace Lutheran Church 23932 Meadow Road, Adel, Iowa www.gracelutheranadel.org WELCOME TO HOLY WEEK!

During Holy Week, Christians commemorate the Passion of Christ, who died on Good Friday to take on the sins of the world, and rose on Easter Sunday to give new life to all who believe. Holy Week is solemn and sorrowful but it also anticipates the joy of Easter through the recognition of God’s amazing grace in sending His Son to die for our salvation. We all know that the Resurrection of Christ changed everything and we look forward to celebrating with all of you on Easter Sunday.

This booklet contains Christ centered activities for Holy Week and our hope is that you will take some time to read through the scriptures each day and review the discussion questions either as a family or with a friend.

All the activites provided are aimed for adults and children alike. Even though they may seem like “children’s crafts” we must remember that it is through children’s eyes that we are able to see more clearly the desired meaning of God’s message. We encouage everyone to take part in the activities. Many of the supplies are included in your bag and the other needed supplies are listed out each day.

Don’t Forget to share photos of your Holy Week and Easter activities on Facebook and tag us @GraceLutheranAdel and/or email them to [email protected] so we can share in Grace Notes and other communiation channels. Thank you for helping us spread the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout Holy Week.

We hope that you enjoy this journey during Holy Week.

Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt,[a] the foal of a beast of burden.’”

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting,“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

Discussion Questions: 1. Why were the people cheering Jesus? What does Hosanna mean? 2. How did Jesus know where the donkey and the colt would be? 3. Where is Jerusalem? What country is Jerusalem in? Find it on the map.

Activity: Folding a Palm Cross There are many creative things you can do with your palms to display these beautiful blessed objects in your home through the year.

When the palms are green and bendable this is when you can make something with them. Once they are dry you will not be able to shape them any more.

On the next page you will find directions on how to fold a palm cross. A palm is included in your bag.

14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read,

17 And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree 18 In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. 19 And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

Page 6 Source: Catholic Icing - www.catholicicicing.com Tuesday: Pharisees Question Jesus Matthew 22:34-46 (ESV) The 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son is the Christ? 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Discussion Questions: 1. Who is Christ? Who’s son is Jesus? 2. Why do you think the Pharisees asked Jesus questions? How do you think the Pharisees felt when they were asking Jesus these questions? What is a “hard heart”? 3. What is the Great Commandment?

Activity: Jesus I Am Instead of asking children or ourselves who Jesus is, we can walk through scriptures and see who Jesus is. This activity is designed to use our senses to help us remember this aspect of the Easter story. This activity is about when Mary anoints Jesus for burial. Jesus is at Simon the Leper’s house when Mary enters with an expensive jar of perfume and she breaks it and pours over Jesus’ feet. Judas and many others are disgruntled at Mary’s waste when there are poor people to feed. Jesus stands up for Mary and says that she is anointing him for burial. Supplies Needed: You will need to provide your own egg carton, scissors, and glue. Colors and the coloring pages are included.

Directions: • Take two egg cartons, and cut off the lids. • Snip slits into one carton just before the last two cups. • Overlap two sets of cups and fit together with the slits. • When they are fitted right secure them with glue. • This will leave you with one long egg carton with 11 cups across. • Find the ‘Last Supper’ Templates • Color the pages and cut out the people and table. • Glue one person to each upside down egg carton cup. You may have to cut them a little shorter depending on your egg carton. Glue them across the front side of the back row, and make sure the two tall onces go on the ends. • The table folds in half and glues on last.

If you want to match the Da Vinci painting, match their names from the coloring pages to the order in the image below.

It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.[a] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

“They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”

So the soldiers did these things, 25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Archeological Evidence For The Crucifixion Of Jesus Christ - The Inscription Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother,“Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

The Death of Jesus 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Discussion Questions: 1. Why do we call this day “good” when Jesus was crucified? 2. What were Jesus’s last words? 3. Why did Jesus have to die? In what way were you at the Crucifixion of Christ? Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Suppos- ing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her,“Mary.” She turned and said to him in Ara- maic,[b] “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary John 20:1-18 (ESV) Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, The Resurrection “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these 1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene things to her. came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the Discussion Questions: tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and 1.
