San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Presents Richard Aldrich's First Solo Museum Show
artdaily.org Tuesday, January 10, 2012 San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Presents Richard Aldrich's First Solo Museum Show Richard Aldrich, Untitled, 2010; oil and wax on panel; 15 x 11 in.; collection of Amy and Harris Schwalb; © Richard Aldrich. Images courtesy Bortolami Gallery, New York, New York. SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Through March 25, 2012, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art presents New Work: Richard Aldrich, the first museum exhibition to feature work exclusively by Richard Aldrich. The presentation brings together an array of new paintings by the New York–based artist anchored by a selection of earlier pieces that show the diversity of his work and the expansive possibilities of painting itself. Organized by Gary Garrels, SFMOMA Elise S. Haas Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture, the exhibition continues the museum's New Work series dedicated to featuring the most innovative expressions of contemporary art. Aldrich pursues an open-ended exploration of painting and uses its fundamental elements—canvas, stretcher bars, paint—to interrogate and celebrate the intellectual and sensual conundrums of the art form. Deeply aware of the historical precedents of abstract painting, he sometimes evokes images and memories, while at other times uses the elements of painting to their own ends. Inherent throughout his work are issues of perception and understanding, explorations of the immediacy of the present moment grounded in language and past experience. The presentation at SFMOMA includes some 14 works of both small, intimate panels and larger canvases that range from resolutely abstract to hints of representation, minimalist to richly colorful and painterly. -

Gigi Hadid Photographed by Helena Christensen Exclusively for the May 2019 Issue of Vogue Czechoslovakia
Gigi Hadid photographed by Helena Christensen exclusively for the May 2019 issue of Vogue Czechoslovakia The May issue of VOGUE CS features a photo shoot with one of the most sought after models in the world - Gigi Hadid. It is the first time Gigi has invited a magazine to her family farm located near New York. Helena Christensen, the Danish supermodel and icon of the nineties - who is also a successful photographer, shot the American model there for the Czechoslovak edition of the world‘s most important fashion magazine. Gigi wore clothes from several Czech fashion designers throughout the cover story. “I am delighted that thanks to the friendship of Eva Herzigova, Helena Christensen and Gigi Hadid, we could photograph Gigi in her secret place, where she has not yet invited any other photographer or jour- nalist. We tried to show Gigi as she’s never been seen before, with her horses, in a place she loves,” says Andrea Běhounková, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue CS. “I wanted her to be as much of herself as possible on her farm among horses, surrounded by nature. Gigi finds not only inspiration, but above all peace and security, in this environment. I wanted to capture her essence, the little girl that still remains in her. The wind blows in her hair, her eyes are full of expectations that something special will happen,” says Helena Christensen. Gigi Hadid personally invited Helena Christensen and the Vogue CS team to her farm located near New York which she shares with her mother and siblings. To capture the intimate and dreamlike atmosphere of the place, Helena Christensen combined digital photography with expired Polaroids. -

Anna Parkina “Nests” Project Space 530 West 21St Street March 5 Through April 10, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Anna Parkina “Nests” Project Space 530 West 21st Street March 5 through April 10, 2010 Gladstone Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by Anna Parkina in the project space. Born in Moscow in 1979, Parkina’s work encompasses a variety of media, including collage, sculpture, and performance. In both her works in two and three dimensions, Parkina configures space as a subjective site simultaneously merging images and forms into a composite region. As Kim West writes in the catalogue for 2009 Venice Biennale, where Parkina’s work was included in the Italian Pavilion, the work achieves “striking visual effects by folding shapes and buildings, patterns and objects, silhouettes and contours into and out of one another, creating a layered, equivocal surface that may call to mind the impossible constructions and perspectives of Escher or perhaps even the treacherous images of Magritte.” For the new body of work on view, entitled “Nests,” Parkina combines collage, watercolor and lithography. Her works are often rooted in the language of Soviet era montage and as such seek to overlap space “both mental and physical” in such a way as to create new and charged landscapes. Works like “Pendulum on the fourth floor“ in which Parkina superimposes fragments of her face over an image of that most ominous of Soviet Era icons, the super apartment block, exemplify this phenomenon. As Parkina herself says, the viewer may “recognize shapes and details which are totally independent, but [at] the same time it is impossible to separate one detail from the rest as there is almost organic fusion inside of the picture.“ Anna Parkina was born in 1979 and lives and works in Moscow. -

The constellation of approaches in the exhibition hinges on a concern with the role, status and nature of language in the current conditions of global digital communication. Languages, or, in a broader sense, sign systems – capable of perpetually producing meanings, manifest themselves in varying forms. Language is ubiquitous, constantly producing and regulating human relationships, ideas and emotions that constitute reality. A consideration of language is only possible at a distance, where speech would reveal its social conventions. By focusing on celebrity endorsements in advertising, it outlines how film actors and actresses, athletes, models, pop singers, sportsmen and women mediate between producers and consumers via the products and services that they endorse. Here celebrities are cultural intermediaries as they give commodities ‘cultural personalities’ and perform across different media, linking different cultural spheres into an integrated whole. But, given the facts that who they advertise for and what they do or do not do have major financial implications for the corporations whose products they endorse, celebrities can also be said to be economic intermediaries. -

BEYOND BEAUTY ELLEN VON UNWERTH BEYOND BEAUTY Beauty thrives on diversity and is in the eye of the beholder. A universal ideal of beauty has long since ceased to exist and yet we still have the ‘women of one’s dreams’, who, with their personality and beauty, have become icons of our time. Preiss Fine Arts will be presenting numerous works of famous photographers of our time within the topic of feminine beauty – in a manner that is both varied and charged with tension. Instead of being limited to superficial stereotypes, the character of the women portrayed is placed at the centre of attention. Different artistic styles are open to inter- pretation. The result is a combination of charismatic portraits and intimate studies of the female body, which are, by no means, devoted to only clichés. Multi-faceted studies of women, which transfix the viewer with self-confidence, personality and strength will be shown.
