Not quite making the cut he wasn’t discouraged, Shane bent the rules and his gender, returning the next day as Courtney Act. Courtney’s explosive, energetic performing style, coupled with her joyous personality, sent audiences wild in the first series of ‘Australian Idol’. With performances of songs like You Don’t Own Me, W.O.M.A.N. and You Shook Me All Night Long, the country was mesmerised and Australia had a new, slightly less conventional, sweetheart. Hot on the high heels of the TV series came the phenomenally successful sell-out Australian Idol Arena Tour where she stopped every show, performing a version of the Kylie Minogue/Robbie Williams duet ’Kids’ with Rob Mills. During all of the Idol excitement a record deal with Sony/BMG was struck which saw Courtney release ‘Rub Me Wrong’, a film clip and a top 40 chart single produced by legendary LA-based writer/producer David Norland who has worked with the likes of Janet Jackson and Madonna. This paper instead considers the ideological cost of this mainstream success, arguing that the show does not successfully challenge dominant heteronormative values. In light of Rosalind Gill’s work on postfeminism, it will be argued that the show’s format calls upon contestants (and viewers) to conform to a postfeminist ideal that valorises normative femininity and reaffirms the gender binary.

Rodríguez, University of California, Riverside ABSTRACT The early twenty-first century saw a marked increase in depictions of LGBTQ people and communities in American popular culture occurring alongside political activism that culminated in the repeal of the Pentagon's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy (2010) and the Supreme Court's overturning of same-sex marriage bans in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015). Even as these events fueled a triumphant progressive narrative in which social and political representation moved LGBTQ people into a better future, a significant strain of LGBTQ-focused popular culture drew its attention to the past. My dissertation, Are They Family?: Queer Parents and Queer Pasts in Popular Culture, examines how American film, television, and literature between 2005 and 2016 construct relationships among LGBTQ people across recent history in generational and familial terms. These works queer the concept of the family by deploying parents and parental figures to examine the role of families in the transmission of queer knowledges, practices, and identities, countering notions of families as mere precursors to queer identity—“families of origin”—or as the agential creations of out LGBTQ people—“families of choice.” These works demonstrate how such dichotomous conceptions of family limit the people, experiences, and forms of affect that are legible within the category of LGBTQ history.

    Caught ‘n ‘e Frame? Queer embodiment under heteropatriarchy Damien W. Riggs To speak about embodiment, or to speak about being an embodied subject who exists in a relationship to particular normative frameworks, requires an understanding of what it means to be a ‘body that matters.’1 To ‘speak as’ an embodied subject is to ‘speak through’ a body that is invested with particular markers that denote a range of social positions, such as those associated with race, class, gender and sexuality, to name but a few. One particular question that these points about embodiment beg, then, is: what does it mean to be a body that cannot (or will not) approximate certain social norms? Questions such as these, particularly as they are informed by the work of Judith Butler, are of central importance when examining representations of ‘queer embodiment.’ The challenge presented by such forms of embodiment is to examine how they may both resist and conform to the norms for embodiment that circulate under white heteropatriarchy, 2 and to identify some of the possibilities that may exist for speaking as an embodied queer subject. In talking about ‘queer embodiment,’ I take my lead from the work of William J. Spurlin who, in proposing that Princess Diana can be understood as a ‘queer icon,’ suggests that the term ‘queer’ may have little to do with sexuality or sexual object preference, and more to do with the disjunctures or paradoxes that certain modes of being may engender. Spurlin suggests that Diana ‘queers’ the heterosexual norm because photographed with Charles, [she] pierces, ruptures, and perhaps wounds the fantasy of the picture-perfect heterosexual couple; the spectator’s attention seems drawn invariably to her, not to Charles and what he, and his family stand for.3 In this sense, to ‘queer’ is to destabilise, to challenge, or to present a critique of established norms.

    Emotion, Femininity and Everyday Experience Straight Female Audience’s Perception of RuPaul’s Drag Race Student name: Yoshino Akizuki Student number: 509330 Supervisor: Balázs Boross Master Arts, Culture and Society Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Master Thesis June 14, 2019 ABSTRACT An American reality TV program RuPaul’s Drag Race, in which drag queens compete with each other to be “America’s Next Drag Superstar,” has earned tremendous hit since it was first broadcast in 2009. Although Drag Race started as a niche program featuring drag queens and targeted only at the LGBTQ community, it is becoming a world-wide phenomenon in mainstream popular culture. Especially, straight female audiences have become a large percentage of the audience. However, why are straight women, who have not necessarily had a connection with drag culture, enthusiastic about Drag Race? Previous research on Drag Race are mainly textual analysis addressing particular issues such as race and ethnicity, social class, body shape and femininity (Darnell and Tabatabai, 2017; Edgar, 2011; Goldmark, 2015; LeMaster, 2015; Strings & Bui, 2014; Vesey, 2017). However, they lack the perspective of actual audience. And therefore, they do not explain the popularity among straight female audience. Since the audience of Drag Race has become increasingly diverse, different audiences interpret the contents differently. As Alasuutari (1999) explains using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model, intended message from producers is not always received “correctly” by audiences. Therefore, it is significant to take into account the perspective of the audience. Furthermore, as Bird (2003) suggests audiences critically and actively interpret the message and put them in the context of everyday experience, we should closely examine the process of meaning-making.
